Community Events / The Sunday Rumble (Sundays @ 4pm EST)

Stream link: http://www.twitch.tv/cesports

The Sunday Rumble is a weekly competitive event that is open to everyone. There are no loadout or substitute restrictions. You don't need to be member of a clan or pass some kind of preliminary to get your shot. If you show up with a team of 8, you get to play.

The format is straightforward. You can register your team in this thread ahead of time or "at the door", as long as you get it to me before the 4pm EST start time. All registrations are on a per-week basis: you don't need to fly the same team as the previous or any week. The registered teams will be placed into a double elimination bracket which will be viewable on the CeSports Challonge page, with each match being a best of three. The map order and spawn side for each game will be randomly generated from the following pool: Canyon Ambush, Duel at Dawn, Northern Fjords, Paritan Rumble.

The first Rumble will be this upcoming Sunday, August 11th. As always you can contact me on Steam or here on the forums. Looking forward to seeing you in the skies!

There are a number of event ideas I'll be pursuing in the coming future, including small one-ofs, weeklies, and more substantial events in the same vein as the Sky Tournament. Since we have an overpopulation of the 4PM EST/Saturday time slot, and several teams who are asking for events at different times and on different days, the question is what times do people want. Not every event can or needs to cater to every team, considering the wide variety of locales within our community, and as long as there are enough parties interested to support even a small event, it's something I'll consider. Let's figure it out.

In the interest of reducing noise, I would prefer if only team captains posted, as they should have the best idea of their crew's availability.

"I'm sure everyone can recall a time in their childhood where they had to deal with the prospects of an undesirable field trip. Whether it's to the box factory, an American baseball game, or the Spire dis-assembly line, you know that hours of boredom are ahead. But wait! If you just 'misplace' that permission slip, you get to hang out in the classroom playing video games with your buddies, as you have a sub with no planned assignments."

-Abraham Lincoln

The "We Hate Field Trips" Mini Rumble is a one-time event being run for those who don't necessarily want a "trip to the box factory", and would rather play some competitive GOIO on their Saturday. The structure is a four team, single-elimination bracket, which will be first-come, first-served (sign up in this thread).

The format is simple. Each set is a best of three with no restrictions on weapon or ship choice. There will be a total of three sets played in the bracket, and the only rule for substitutes is a player can't fly with two different teams. The map pool is as follows: Canyon Ambush, Duel at Dawn, Northern Fjords, Paritan Rumble. The map order for each set will be randomly generated.

To sign up, RSVP in this thread. There are only four guaranteed spots available. You may also contact me on Steam.

Start time world clock.

Community Events / The Icarus Sky Tournament 6/8 4PM EST [BRACKET]

Bracket link (this will be updated during the tournament):
http://cesports.challonge.com/skytournament

Stream link:
http://www.twitch.tv/qwerty2jam/

Broadcast schedule: A/B, C, D. The two quarterfinals matches will be run simultaneously, so only one will be broadcasted live. I intend to have the referee of the non-broadcasted match record a video that will be released after the fact.

The quarter/semifinals matches will all be best of three. Each team will provide a loadout at the start of the series. The winner of each game will be locked to that game's loadout for the next game in the series. Map order is provided below.

To explain how the bracket was setup, the three teams who advanced undefeated were placed in a priority seeding pool. Two of those teams were selected at random and seeded into the semifinals. The remaining four teams were seeded in a way that each arm of the bracket contains one team from each group.

The maps will be as follows:

Match A
Canyon Ambush
Battle on the Dunes
Duel at Dawn

Match B
Canyon Ambush
Duel at Dawn
Northern Fjords

Match C
Battle on the Dunes
Duel at Dawn
Northern Fjords

Match D
Duel at Dawn
Canyon Ambush
Battle on the Dunes

Good luck to all competitors. Show us what you're made of!

Feedback and Suggestions / Spectator mode suggestions
« on: May 16, 2013, 02:30:57 pm »
As both a casual spectator, as well as promoter of competition streaming, here are some things I would like to see to improve the viewing experience.

- Mini-map. Allow the viewers to get the top-down perspective of what's going on without having to obscure the action with the normal map. There's a nice place for it above the chat (or swap those positions).

- Highlight the ship you're locked to on the map. Just like when you're crewing on a boat, highlight the ship to make it clear which arrow is yours.

- Spectator arrow when you are free roaming. Just a little grey/beige arrow to see your current position and orientation.

- Ability to use free roam spectator movement while locked to a ship to apply offsets. Sometimes you want to follow a ship, see it's various components statuses, but not necessarily have it in the center of the screen.

- Game timer. This is something I would like to see in the normal play interface as well.

Gameplay / Suicide - risk/reward option or cheap tactic?
« on: May 12, 2013, 06:24:09 am »
If you haven't seen the BFS vs Destructoid match from yesterday's Cogs, here is a timestamped link to the event in question:
http://www.twitch.tv/qwerty2jam/b/402287974?t=100m40s

Summary: BFS's squid survives a 1v2 situation on Canyon Ambush with 10% remaining health, books it back to their spawn to meet up with the respawned junker, and then proceeds to kill his own ship with tar. This allows him to respawn with full health, without giving any points to the opposing team.

Most people's immediate response (as was mine) would be something along the lines of: "that's pretty dumb, that should not be allowed". It's a valid response, and banning the tactic might be the correct decision. I would however like to explore the other side of the argument.

Suicide-ing your ship has risks. You're completely vulnerable while attempting, and also leave your teammate stranded while you're respawning. If it remains an allowed tactic, teams will be aware of this option, and will be incentivized to chase down damaged ships, rather than say, camping at their spawn and waiting for them to come back. If you're expecting a ship to attempt suicide, a stealth approach with the goal of "last hitting" may become a valid counter, giving you the "free" kill of the low ship and probably also their teammate. Success rate would vary a lot based on positioning and what map is being played, since you will announce to the server that you are killing components.

Just wondering what everyone else's thoughts are.

Community Events / The Icarus Sky Tournament [INFO]
« on: May 03, 2013, 03:37:59 am »

The Format
The Sky Tournament is a four week, 2v2 event where 16 teams are whittled down through multiple stages, until we have one we can crown the champion of Icarus. We begin with two weeks of Group Stage. Each team is seeded into a group with three others, and between them, five best of one matches will be played. Win two, and you've advanced to the championship bracket. Lose two, we hope to see you for the next tournament. Two teams from each group will advance.

Once we have our eight teams who've passed the group stage, they will be seeded into the Championship Bracket for the third weekend. The four quarterfinals matches will be played simultaneously, as to not have an unduly long round. The semifinals will then leave us with two remaining teams.

You have a week to prepare for your last challenge, for on the fourth weekend we have the Finals Match. Our two top teams will compete in an intense best of five series, from which we will see who truly is the strongest crew in the skies.

The Loot
For each member of our champion team, Muse will be providing one costume item, alongside a gift copy of Guns of Icarus Online. Give it to your friend, your "bro", your compadre. Or keep it for yourself and make a smurf account with an amusing name. We won't judge. You earned it.

The Signup
Post in this thread team names and crew rosters. Rosters may be modified at any point, the only hard rule being that nobody may play on two separate teams. You may provide a logo to be used on stream. Teams both old and new are welcome; everyone gets a chance to show their stuff. Signups will close on Monday, May 20th, five days before the event kickoff.

The Schedule
All days are currently scheduled to start at 4PM Eastern Standard Time. You can find that in your local time here. We're estimating each day to run about three hours.

The Live Stream
Each day of the Sky Tournament will be streamed live and cast by analysis wizards Qwerty2jam and PapaParadox. The plan is to have every match on stream, with the exception of the championship bracket, where only one quarterfinals match will be broadcasted with the semifinals, due to time concerns. Be sure to tune in!

Feel free to use this thread to post any questions or concerns you may have. The signup thread is here. You may also add me on Steam to contact directly. Hope to see you in the sky!

Sky Tournament Signups

Signups close Monday, May 20th. Group A will play on Saturday, May 25th. Tournament info and discussion thread.

All those seeking the wealth and glory of the Sky Tournament, new blood and old champions, provide the following information:
  • Team name, and clan name if entering multiple teams
  • Team captain, will be responsible for communicating with the tournament organizer (Urz)
  • Pilots and crew rosters. May be changed at any point, but try to post up-to-date information as often as possible
It is not requisite to submit substitutes, however no person may crew for two separate teams. If you need to bring in a sub, please inform me at some point before your matches start to prevent confusion.
  • Optional: a team logo, optimally transparent
If you only have one boat, feel free to post anyways and state you're seeking another crew to partner with.

Feedback and Suggestions / Static component status indicators
« on: April 06, 2013, 01:33:19 am »
While I can guess the reasoning behind the current indicators (to show new players the locations of the parts on the ship?), I'd like to see the option to toggle on a static set of indicators like the ones recently added to spectator mode. Give players the ability to more quickly and accurately see the entire status of the ship they are on, rather than needlessly scanning the borders of their screen, allowing more attention to be spent on the things happening outside.

Community Events / The Fight Club [SIGNUP]
« on: March 25, 2013, 02:00:24 am »
Welcome to The Fight Club, an on-going series of competitive scrimmage matches where we pit two of the best teams in the game versus, in what will surely be play of the highest caliber. Or that's the plan, at least. The games will be streamed and commentated by the esteemed videographer, Qwerty.

The format is simple: each week two teams will play a best of five set, starting with a blind pick loadout, and moving into a ban/pick/counterpick procedure for the subsequent games. The teams will be given a week to study their opponents and prepare for their set.

Signup and preparation
If you're a captain wishing to signup for The Fight Club, feel free to post in this thread or contact myself (Urz) in-game or on Steam. Ideally the matches will take place sometime on the weekend (Friday/Saturday/Sunday), and scheduling will be a combination of first-come first-served and best effort on part of the organizers to accommodate everyone reasonably. We will try to schedule the games at least five days in advance. You will be notified of the starting map order at this point.

Crew lineups are not required to be submitted ahead of time and may be adjusted at any point prior to the match; once the match starts however your crew will be locked in for the duration. Feel free to provide crew information ahead of time for the sake of flavoring the stream.

Pre-game procedure
The Fight Club has a strictly defined pre-game procedure which exists in effort to cultivate diversity in the competitive metagame.

For the first three games, the maps will be randomly selected from our map pool. At the time of the match, a representative from each team will provide us with the loadout ("loadout" referring to the ship choices and weapon configuration) they will use for the first game. This is the blind pick.

Upon completion of the first game, and prior to all subsequent games, we will go into the following ban/pick/counterpick procedure:

(for the fourth and fifth games only) Loser picks map
Winner may elect to ban one weapon: the chosen weapon may not be used on either ship for the following game
Loser may elect to ban one weapon
Winner may change their loadout: at no other point the loadout may be changed and it is then locked for the following game
Loser may change their loadout

Canyon Ambush
Duel at Dawn
