Test Phase is a recurring event set up to provide a competitive environment for testing proposed balance and mechanical changes. The format will be either a round robin or elimination bracket, played as 'best of three' sets.

Test Phase takes place in the Dev App: a separate Guns of Icarus client which Muse uses to test upcoming changes and game patches. If you do not have access to the Dev App, you will need to follow the instructions from the Steam group to receive a key, and then install the Dev App from Steam.

You need a team of eight players to participate in Test Phase. Make sure each of your players has access to and has installed the Dev App.

Test Phase is currently scheduled for August 26th (Saturday) at 7pm UTC (3pm EDT).

You can convert the scheduled time into your local time zone here.

The event will be streamed at https://www.twitch.tv/urzy.

To signup: post in this thread with your team name and team contacts. You may include a team logo with your signup.

Test Phase is a one-day event being run to test the viability and effect of a map striking system on competitive Guns of Icarus. The format will be a scrimmage round robin, played as 'best of three' sets.

We'll be testing a '5+2 map strike'. The procedure is detailed below.

Before the first game of a set, the captains of both teams will begin a map strike with their referee. A coin will be flipped to determine who makes the first strike. The striking order will be 1-2-1: the first team strikes the first map, the second team gets to strike two maps, and then the first team gets to pick between the remaining two.

The starter map pool for the first game is as follows.
  • Canyon Ambush
  • Clash at Blackcliff
  • Northern Fjords
  • Paritan Rumble
  • Water Hazard
For each subsequent game, the loser of the previous game gets to choose any map from a combined list of the starter maps and the following two. Their opponent may strike one map from this combined list.
  • Battle on the Dunes
  • Fight over Firnfeld
Duel at Dawn is excluded from this test event.

Test Phase is currently scheduled for January 14th (Saturday) at 8pm UTC (3pm EST).

The event will be streamed at https://www.twitch.tv/urzy.

Details for the communication of map striking is still being worked out.

Community Events / Considering a map pick phase for competitive GOIO
« on: December 29, 2016, 08:10:36 pm »
Given the long stagnation of the competitive GOIO scene, and lack of support from Muse in providing client functionality to help bolster the integrity of competitive matches: it seems like a good time to try some new stuff.

The maps in this game vary widely from each other and have properties which favor certain ships, playstyles, or teams. The completely random map roll can play a significant role in the outcome of a match, particularly in the "best of one" set format that's currently used.

In addition: there are specific maps which overwhelmingly produce boring matches, and we could certainly use less of those.

What I am proposing is for the first game of a set to start with a map pick phase based on a pool of five maps. Starting with the five maps deemed most suitable for competitive play, the team captains take turns removing maps from the pool until one is left. For subsequent games within a set, the loser of the previous game would get to choose whichever map they wanted from the full pool.

This leads to fewer matches being decided by the random rolls, more games being played on "neutral" maps, and making matches closer overall.

Gameplay / Competitive Ship Tier List 2016 (1.4.5)
« on: March 09, 2016, 09:44:48 am »
With a balance patch on the horizon, I sought to take a snapshot of what the competitive metagame looks like today. Although I believe the ordering of this list falls in line with general consensus from the competitive community, it is opinion. Two years ago I posted my previous tier list, which I've included for comparison.

S-Tier

Mobula
The Mobula is an all-range threat which really has everything going for it. Forward-facing weaponry allow the ship to pressure a target while controlling engagement distance. An excellent movement profile built primarily on high vertical acceleration allow it to dodge incoming fire with ease. The turret spread combined with protected rear engines make it resistant to the disabling power of the artemis and hwacha. The Mobula has dominated the competitive field for the last year.

High Tier

Goldfish
The combination of Hwacha jitter reduction and introduction of gunner stamina in last year's balance patch turned that gun into a monster, and no ship was better positioned to capitalize than the Goldfish. Previously effective exclusively at close-range, the improved Hwacha extends the Goldfish's jurisdiction well into 500m range and beyond. Kept in check only by the Mobula's evasive options and ability to snipe out the front gun, the Goldfish has favorable matchups against every ship below it on the tier list.

Squid
The Squid gets major points for being the only ship on this list with a favorable matchup against King Mob. It can quickly get into the target's blind spot, focus the exposed hull, and do a lot of damage in a short amount of time. The Squid does however have a difficult time against the other ships on this list. The Goldfish's close-range disable power will stop the Squid in it's tracks, and the high armor of the Galleon and Junker can be tough to penetrate with only two light weapons.

Mid Tier

Galleon
The Galleon's strength hinges entirely on one gun: the lumberjack. Being the only viable ship with access to the powerful balloon popper, it's also the only ship which can truly contest the Mobula in a long-range fight. A skilled lumberjack gunner can be disruptive and quickly lock down any target, but a few missed shots will allow your extremely vulnerable weapons to be disabled by incoming artemis fire. The Galleon also struggles against the Goldfish, which can quickly close the distance and outmaneuver the sluggish tank.

Low Tier

Junker
At one point considered the best ship in the game - the Junker's fall from grace largely tracks with the rise of the Mobula. The Mobula's strengths are the Junker's weaknesses: low vertical acceleration and tightly packed components make it difficult for the Junker to protect it's guns and engines. Broadside turret placement and a slow forward charging speed means it can't dictate terms in a fight. The Junker struggles in open maps, but high armor and great close-range mobility gives it some success on Canyon Ambush.

Bad Tier

Spire
What do you do with a Spire? The eternal low-tier - Spire has the same weakness as the Galleon in being a slow ship reliant on a vulnerable heavy weapon, but lacks the tankiness to sustain through multiple waves of sniper fire. At close-range it gets eaten by the Goldfish, shut down by a quick hwacha or carronade round and then quickly detroyed. The Spire's best matchup is the Pyramidion, and with the latter falling out of competitive play, the fringe utility of the Spire is gone as well.

Pyramidion
A series of unfavorable balance patches has dropped the Pyramidion to the very bottom of this list. The ship's current interation is slow, fragile, and lacks the versatility of it's contemporaries. Having only two reliable gun slots prices the Pyramidion into being a close-range brawler, but having low numbers in all movement vectors makes it extremely difficult to corner a target. The Pyramidion has no good matchups and no place in a competitive game.

Dev App Testing / Request: Consolidate patch feedback threads
« on: March 09, 2016, 12:40:07 am »
There are currently six[1] separate Muse-posted threads for discussing the current balance tests, with three of them active in the last 24 hours. Having the conversation split like this makes it more difficult for testers to keep up and participate in the discussions.

I propose having a single thread for each test patch/week, and locking the previous so the conversation moves over.

Testers can of course still make their own threads in the General Discussion section, if there's the need to have a more specific conversation.

Community Events / Should SCS be moved to Saturday?
« on: June 22, 2015, 02:35:18 pm »
Since there have been a lack of Saturday events in 2015 (aside from Aerodrome next month), should SCS be run on Saturdays when there is not a conflicting event?

Feedback and Suggestions / Friend lobby toggle for match list

Please add a filter for the main match list which only shows lobbies which have friends in them. I'm pretty tired of going through my whole friends list every time I login, clicking, leaving because European, leaving because 3v3, getting password dialog, etc.

Community Events / Doritos Sports Cool Ranch League
« on: April 01, 2014, 08:55:28 am »

Brought to you by the fine folks at Frito-Lay, the Doritos Sports Cool Ranch League is a 24 month competitive epic to determine the strongest of the strong, while enjoying the bold taste of Doritos-brand tortilla chips. The structure of the tournament will be based on the concept of planetary bracketing. All competing teams will be inserted into the Doritos Sports Flavorizerâ„¢, a series of three brackets rotating around a central 'champions' bracket. One bracket will be played out each month for four months, with winners from the newcomers brackets fighting to stay in contention, and the chance to challenge the champions bracket from the challengers bracket for the chance to be a champion. Following each four month period, the brackets will be rotated and the process begins anew until we have found the team worthy of being called the coolest in the sky!

This event is part of the Frito-Lays campaign to promote Doritos as the perfect snack food for consumer air travel: "Feel the cool ranch in your hair."

Signups:
  • Each team requires a minimum of eight members to participate
  • Please include contact info for your team's captain, along with a photo of them enjoying Doritos-brand tortilla chips
Prizes:
  • All members of the winning team will be flown out to Frito-Lay headquarters in Plano, Texas for a one hour swim in the Doritos vault
  • All members of the winning and runner-up teams will receive sampler package of experimental Doritos flavors, including one you would never guess!
  • Prizes are only valid with the signature of a non-disclosure agreement
