I'm with shinkurex, I make some amazing stick figures.  Talk of the battalion I was, with my stick figure brigades and poorly drawn battle plans done with crayons and magic markers.
So you keep them coming, one of us needs to have some kind of talent!

Never trust a man with two first names.  Richard Timothy for starters, shifty character that one.

Gameplay / Re: Ship Builds
« on: February 28, 2013, 05:27:50 am »
I try to keep my ship loads mutable, match to match and map to map.  A lot is dependent on the skill level of my opponent, and the relative skill of my crew and team.
When I have a less skilled crew I prefer ship/weapon combinations that put more control in my hands.  The Hwatcha Goldfish with side mounted chain and banshee guns allows me disabling power on the front and side, or the option to strip armor if I need to ram somebody or support at medium-close range.

For more experienced crews I go for the Junker.  For long engagement maps I will put a Merc on the front with a merc on the port/starboard sides along with an rocket launcher, or another merc.  If I'm doubling the merc the bowsprit gun is usually a banshee.
The other side I always pair with a chain/flak combo for shredding armor and popping hulls.  It rarely fails and with the right pilot tools can make for a devastating fast pass.

Short range I'm flip flopping a lot.  I've always been fond of the Banshee, and with inexperienced crews it works well with a chain gun.  With experienced crews I prefer even closer range work with barkers and flame throwers to disable enemy ships with larger tanks like the Galleon.

Community Events / Re: "The Cogs" League Discussion
« on: February 28, 2013, 05:14:52 am »
It may take a few failed attempts to get the Cogs league up and running.  Especially with all the new players, alliances and teams tend to shift a lot during these moments before settling down into something semi-solid.
I've been considering abandoning the niche of Mercenary Captain and formally opening up a team of my own The Whalers.  My general concern is a lack of high numbers participating on the boards at this time to really fill 2 ships.  Possibly fill one ship, and partner up with another team that is lacking a ship.

Its unfortunate the problem your experiencing LadyAthena, but as it has been said earlier in this post this can be largely avoided with better captained and/or crewed ships.
Experienced players will use the close range flame tactic to harass new players and bring their ships low.  A common tactic is to mount a barker on one part of a ship and a flame on the other that can both hit at the same time.  It can be rather demoralizing to be on the receiving end of this, especially if your not prepared to counter it.

If this scenario arises in a match, that enemy ship has eliminated its burst damage potential for disabling, and if a squid it removes it's speed advantage by having to stay close to the enemy it's engaging.  Your ally should be shaking that squid off you, or you ramming it as soon as you can.  Getting close to terrain where the Squid can't circle around you quickly is a good way to wedge it into a hard surface and pop it, or restrict it's movement even more so an ally can pop the ship.

This is going to continue being frustrating and appear to be overpowered till your in a position of tactical advantage and can cram that flamethrower down your opponents throat.

General Discussion / Re: "The Broadside Anchor"

Well, what about starting a thread in the Cantina, something interactive that the community can get involved in.
Choose a location from among the various towns and cities and make a Weekly "Press".  You could put an RP spin on particular events like the bounty challenges, the stream video matches or Cog leagues!

Junker - Cloud Whaler
Nothing is greater, no foe more terrible, then the Cloud Whale.  It rises from the Blue with a ferocious shout, sundering the quiet still with a mighty crash that splinters hulls and ruptures balloons.  He runs fore, and his eye is a furious light of hell deep in the sand storms that whip up from the Burren likes Gods wrath on Saddam and Gomorrah.  I hunt these beasts, with lead and fire, with the blood and sweat of men.  I will sacrifice it all to bring the beast low, none shall ever be safe whilst I live to draw breath and pull a trigger.

Galleon - Cloud Whale
A big, slow moving tyrant of the deep blue who moves through the skies like a lumbering beast, the report of the twin heavy flaks the mournful song of war that echoes out into the heavens.

Goldfish - Hold Fast
I was in the United States Navy, I name the Goldfish in honor of that service.

Squid - Harpooner
Fly fast, strike true, bite deep.  It is the prayer every strong arm shouts over the crash of cross winds and report of weapons fire when he sends forth a lance of fire into the meaty hull of his enemy.  She takes her name from the Gunners that man this small life boat in the perilous blue.  I salute you, Gunner.

Pyramidion - Albatross
It is thought that an Albatross that follows a ship out to sea is an omen of good luck.  So don't shoot her down, less you find the bowsprit of my hull buried into your flank and I force you to wear it as penance. (Salutes to anyone who gets it)

Spire - Twisting Eel
She moves fast, side to side, spinning about like a twister before striking out with a sudden and devastating bite.  The viper of the blue, the Eel.

Kian and her desolate ice wastes.  Deep in the night, when the horns sound the coming raids of another pirate you can hear the response of a creature in the valleys and cloudy peaks.  A deep rumble that shakes the walls of cliffs, cracks the ice and sends snow tumbling down from its perch.
The mournful cry of a Cloud Whale, an ancient beast and Lord of all the sky.

That's right helium just does the same thing as argon and pushes oxygen out right?  Noble gas, it's been so long since my first chemistry lessons that I'm forgetting the first lessons.  Hydrogen, that's what I meant.

Gameplay / Re: Junker Fight Club

My go to ship, the Junker.  My pride and joy, The Cloud Whaler.
With a chain gun on the UL and a Flak on the LL I've been able to chew through most opposition, even with the newbies I like to fly with when the terrible sky tyrant turns into the magic school bus.
On my right side and bowsprit I try to keep it fluid, or as needed.
Merc/Artemis is a tasty combination, with a banshee rocking the front.  I've also tried flame and barker for that up in your grill kill.  What's big for me is captain tools on this beast; kerosene is often a must, along with my tar that I can't live without.  I'll adjust the fit depending on the opposition, such as some lionfish spitting rocket death at me, well that'll be chutes and hydrogen to keep me out of that things arc.
For squids I like to have tar and a Phoenix claw, as they love getting into my rear and I almost feel obliged to make the squid feel at home in a cloud of ink before I turn hard and bring a chain gun and flak into its face.
Galleons I'm loathe to take toe to toe, preferring to deal the killing blow while other ships soak up hits.  Same goes for pyramidions, I'm not fond of them getting close to me.
