Feedback and Suggestions / Scoreboard when dead

When you die/are destroyed and you are shown the spawn map, you cannot view the scoreboard. Can we please be able to?

Please add pink.

The Docks / Looking for an Australian crew
« on: December 18, 2013, 10:46:44 pm »
I'm sick of playing on 300ms servers. I want to hop onto Guns Of Icarus Online and see at least one Oceania match.

Why don't we form a "crew" for Australian and New Zealanders? It doesn't have to be formal, unless we want it to, with the primary goal to simply organise us and to host regular matches.

We could host regular matches every night or every few nights. We could form crews to fight against or with. Eventually we could even have a tournament or a proper clan!

Who's in?

Feedback and Suggestions / Clearer capture indicator
« on: December 17, 2013, 10:19:41 pm »
When the point is captured it's fine - the little icon is a full colour of the team who owns it. When the point is being captured or is being contested is really confusing.

The white lines in the icon makes it very hard to see if the point is actually going up or down unless you look hard at it. It adds contrast to an already hard to see icon when on a dark background. Maybe you could add a solid white circle to the background of the icon to help visibility.

Maybe the icon can blink or pulse when it's being contested. That will make it very clear. Blinking usually indicates something is paused, however contesting a point in this game does not pause it (for some reason).

The number in the circle is confusing. Is that the number of total ships in the capture point? Is that the friendly ships? Enemy ships? Maybe a little ship indicator on either side of the capture icon could indicate the number of ships capturing. 3 ships on the left (blue) means 3 blue ships. 1 on the right (red) means 1 red.

I know I'll probably get a lot of negative feedback (as I do with nearly all of my suggestions) but you guys are all used to the UI. I am mostly and I understand how it works most of the time, but if I can't work it out sometimes (and I play a lot of games) then what hope does the rest of the world have?

A good UI doesn't need explanation or people asking questions. It should be clear and obvious.

TL, DR: capture icon is hard to read.

Feedback and Suggestions / Gamemode: Protect the ship
« on: December 17, 2013, 03:23:19 am »
I suggest a gamemode in which one team must protect a V.I.P. ship and the other must destroy it.

That ship would be AI controlled on auto-pilot, flying around the map on a specific (but slightly random) path.

Human crew members could man the ship but not pilot it, so they can man the guns.

The gamemode would be on a timer (like KOTH) so when the time runs out or the defending team reaches the required time, the defending team wins. If the attacking team destroys the ship or destroys the ship a set number of times, the attacking team wins.

Feedback and Suggestions / Integrated website chat
« on: December 16, 2013, 11:59:11 pm »
I suggested this earlier this year but it never gained much traction. I'd still like to see this implemented, so I'm re-posting.

I propose a chat integrated into the forums. It could be Flash or IRC or AJAX based, or if possible (and everyone's dream), integrated with the Guns Of Icarus client chat. Ultimately it would not require separate log-in from members of the forum (IRC requires sign-up).

Why? It gives everyone a (official) place to lurk and hang out in real-time, as opposed to using the forums or having to keep the game client open (even if we do, that chat is still pretty crap) which is impossible for some people (eg. mobile users).

Why would we not create our own IRC channels or create a group on Steam etc? People prefer an official place to go. It would have a link in the header of the forum. Staff would be encouraged to sit in there when possible, possibly to offer real-time support if they choose to.

Before you go saying that it'd be hard to implement: no. No it isn't. I have plenty of experience with forums and integrating chat systems into them. There are SMF modules for chats you can just dump in. Have a search: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=search;basic_search=chat It literally takes 5 minutes.

I'd appreciate input from everyone, especially the staff.

Feedback and Suggestions / Voice promixity
« on: December 16, 2013, 04:24:12 am »
Instead of talking and everyone hearing you at the same volume level, if you are far away from someone you'll hear them much quieter.

Imagine being the captain and hearing your crew call out enemy positions from where they're standing (the port/starboard sides), or a crew member repairing the engines and calling out that he needs help. It'd definitely help the sense of realism.

Even cooler: radios or talking funnels/tubes on big ships. The Galleon could have one or two next to him and when the gunner below deck talks, it would come out from the funnel next to him.

Voice proximity isn't a big thing in gaming, which disappoints me, but it does exist in some games. Most notably Resistance and Liberation, a realistic WWII FPS, Planetside 2 (a huge MMO FPS) and some others.

Feedback and Suggestions / Flag communication/identification
« on: December 16, 2013, 04:19:44 am »
Flags were used back in naval combat for communication and identification. Can we please use them with our airships?

Each ship could have a unique flag design and a nice big flag in a visible place on the ship to identify them. It would be cool to see a ship passing through a cloud and have to make out the flag to identify them.

You could signal your allied ships with flags, just like the voice commands. Some commands:
  • We're going to attack
  • We're heavily damaged
  • We need help
  • We're leaving/running away
When you select a command, the flag would appear somewhere on the ship (and the relevant command shown in the chat only to the other captain) maybe only to allies to prevent the enemy from working out your plans.

Feedback and Suggestions / Adding friends sends a request
« on: December 16, 2013, 04:13:10 am »
At the mo when you add someone to your in-game friends list, it only adds them for you. Not for both of you. This is painful if you've had a great few matches with someone and you want to keep in touch with them and (you guess) they with you, but you don't want to awkwardly ask them to add them to your friends list.

I hardly play so I hardly get people adding me as a friend (waaaaa) so I'm unsure if it does but what if adding someone notifies the other person? That way they can be reminded that they can add the person back.

Feedback and Suggestions / "Strange" guns and ships (keeps track of kills)
« on: December 16, 2013, 03:48:43 am »
I'm sure most of you have played TF2 or GSGO or Dota 2 that have "strange" items that keep track of kills.

Maybe our guns, ships and hammers could keep track of kills, repairs, rebuilds, etc? Maybe a micro-transaction (as much as I hate them) to prevent everyone from tracking?

In the games that have already implemented them I see no change in gameplay or anything like that. The most I get is a "woah, he's been playing for a while" when I see someone with thousands of kills.

Feedback and Suggestions / "Expert" HUD-less mode
« on: March 14, 2013, 01:47:07 am »
I suggest a new mode that can be enabled per user or per match/game/server: an expert (or "realistic") HUD-less mode that completely removes the HUD in-game (and in the case of a match with this option enabled - your enemies and allies too).

It'd make you much more aware of your ship layout and will force you to continuously check each component rather than "cheating" and looking at your HUD. You'll also need to track your ammo, just like you would in real life. I know it'll make things 200% harder, but for realism nuts like me, it'd be pretty fun.

Also easy to implement: remove the HUD. Forcing it in matches would require some more time, of course.

Thoughts?

General Discussion / My experience today
« on: March 11, 2013, 12:15:35 am »
I only played for about 20 minutes today and it was awful.

I decided to try out different ships and guns because for the past 5 ranks of piloting and captaining I've been using my Goldfish with pretty much the same configuration. It was a terrible mistake.

The configurations I did go for weren't the best and we completely lost. My crew and other players in the match let me know that. In-game I made several mistakes which led to our demise, and I had both my crew and my co-captain telling me (at the same time I might add). That was truly awful. I raged quit from my game due to becoming emotional.

Never in my whole GoI experience have I felt this emotional about it.

I'm saying this here because I want someone to know. I want to vent. Maybe other captains feel my pain of trying things out and being flamed at for it. Hopefully those in the game can understand.

Thanks.

Feedback and Suggestions / Changing audio device
« on: March 10, 2013, 11:36:09 pm »
I frequently switch between my speakers and my headset, but when I change the audio device through Windows the game does not detect the change and so I have to restart it.

Can that be fixed please?

Many games have pre-configurations for classes/loadouts. Can we please have them for ships?

Feedback and Suggestions / Nationality/language in-game
« on: March 07, 2013, 06:54:30 am »
Can there be some indicator somewhere to learn someone's nationality or language? To help with communication and joining crews that all speak the same language.
