Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Weather system.

Weather is one of the most terrifying elements of flying.  Being struck by lightning can either be remarkably unremarkable (which was my lucky case) or it rips even modern aircraft into pieces.

Though I enjoy Impressionists, I think they're a little too out in left field for their tonalities and compositional techniques to make sense as music that accompanies concepts, like it would in a video game.  I look forward to hearing your new contributions to the score for Guns of Icarus!  Please give us some previews when you have the chance!

Gameplay / Re: Hydrogen/Chute Vent Damage
« on: July 25, 2013, 10:34:39 am »
Some other uses for those tools:

Some people use hydrogen to 'shoryuken'-ram enemies.  This way, you have not only a high forward velocity, but a high upward one as well.  Works best in ships with large balloons, so you ram with the balloon, not the hull.

Chute vent also helps get you lower with carronades, in case an opponent with a popped balloon drops below the vertical firing arc.

Hydrogen can also be used to go above Pyramidions, and since the nose cone limits the vertical firing arc of the front guns, this can put you back in to a more advantageous position.  Likewise, it can be used on a Pyramidion to bring your guns back to bear on a high target.

I personally used Vent and Hydro on my Squid for a long time.  Normal maneuvering in the vertical plane is pretty slow in Guns of Icarus, which means that unless they have a buffed balloon or the same item as you, using one of those items is effectively an out-of-plane maneuver, which allows you to disengage if you're at a disadvantage.  Similarly, it can quickly bring you in-plane from an out-of-plane position, which means you can move from being out of an opponent's gun arc into a close engagement very quickly--useful for carronades and flamethrowers.

As for dealing with the damage, there's a bit of finesse to knowing how much altitude you need to gain or lose.  If you keep Chute Vent on until you descend to your desired level, you're probably going to faceplant into the dirt.  There's also a bit of premeditation that helps--if you prioritize balloon repairs shortly before when you know you're going to use a balloon item, you can avoid a pop.

The Lounge / Re: That Moment When...

That moment when a your Galleon finds itself the victim of a well-executed Spire ambush from a cloud, and is subsequently awarded a ramming kill while stationary.

Also, Zill, the $25 at 11 years is nothing new. Mobility pilots (transport and refuelers) have had that for a while. With sequestration, the money and flying hours to keep manning for fighter pilots at those previous levels just isn't there anymore. The point nosers here are barely allowed to even fly their airframes because they fly do infrequently.

World / Fleshing Out the Lore of Sunken Ships
« on: July 21, 2013, 11:01:43 pm »
I've been away from the community for a few months, but was very much reminded of Guns of Icarus when I got my hands on a copy of Last Exile.
The large airship battle scenes are incredibly epic--too epic for the wood-and-balloon combat context of the current age of GoI.  It did make me think about those giant rusted relics on Dunes and the metropolitan ruins of Labyrinth, as well as the enormous ribs on Duel.  The initial combat is actually ships opening up their side armor and using steam-powered muskets to fight American Revolution-era line-against-line battles.  It's an interesting intersection of chivalry and, in some cases, victory by exploitation of those practices.

I'm unaware of any substantial existing backstory to the current state of affairs in the GoI universe.  If nothing else, I wanted to share a great series in the same vein as this game and serve it up as idea fodder.

Tesla-type weaponry and electric fences require the discovery of alternating current, which is sort of a world-changing advent.  Aside from the Shai-Hulud bit, I do see them as Fremen-types (with regards to the picture posted above).

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: The Barracuda Sky Torpedo

An aerial unguided torpedo is a rocket. An aerial guided torpedo is a missile (barring an in-depth technical discussion).  We're basically talking about a bigger Artemis, aren't we?

Gameplay / Re: Spire Discussion.
« on: June 21, 2013, 11:02:19 pm »
I find the Spire to be consistently bad when a Pyramidion-only captain decides that full forward throttle and guns blazing is the only way to fight.  If you choose your loadout carefully, you can engage and destroy ships well beyond their weapons' maximum ranges.    Most pilots aren't willing to stop and maintain proper distance.  That's the real weakness of the Spire.

Gameplay / Re: Kerosene vs Moonshine vs Phoenix Claw
« on: June 21, 2013, 10:54:15 pm »
I use Moonshine exclusively over Kerosene because it almost instantly moves you from a dead stop to forward speed, and even works very well if you're in full reverse.  It helps alleviate that annoying acceleration problem.

Feedback and Suggestions / SPOILER tags for the Forums
« on: June 15, 2013, 12:10:23 pm »
I'd like to suggest SPOILER tags (content is hidden unless SPOILER button is clicked) to prevent obnoxious quote pyramids and image quotes from needlessly cluttering the forum.

I know that you all didn't build your forums from scratch, and as far as I can tell this functionality isn't implemented/doesn't exist in the current build.
