Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Lobby for competitive play
« on: August 25, 2013, 01:14:44 pm »
Hi!

I've been thinking of several features for competitive matches which could help to run those games.
These ideas may not necessarily be groundbreaking world exclusive ones, but based on what I've seen in other games and such. So a competitive lobby with the options of:
- Set to enable/disable friendly fire, because why not? If you play competitive you should know which one is the enemy ship.
- A referee: now this one would be the huge deal. Referee would be a special slot in spectators with a set of rights. Rights like: change the map and game mode, start the map instead of waiting for countdown, restart map, pause/unpause the game, kicking unwanted players (like AFK spectators),  putting on/changing lobby password, "muting" spectator chat, ??.

What do you think?

I like these ideas, they have a lot of merit. I know in the Sunday Rumble best of 3's it's been a royal pain when the map we require hasn't appeared so we need to create a new lobby.

A quick fix for that, for now, would be to extend the "voting for new map" timer a bit. Maybe some sort of prompt to remind people to vote as well. I am so sick of it defaulting to Dunes for the 100th time before anyone has the chance to vote for anything else.  GOI isn't the sort of game where you start the next match ten seconds after one has just finished, anyway.

and are at an inherent disadvantage as far as the scoreboard is concerned.
Underdog bonus can get you 10 points a week ^^

Yes... if you play at least 5 scrims. However, if you're playing 5+ scrims a week then you're not a team that can't play often XD

If anything, it means that a clan that plays more often can get back into pole position even faster in the unlikely event it slips down the leaderboards.

Could you remove the part under the clan tags section about "We have no clan tags, call your ship what you want!" (that's outdated now it's about tagging players rather than ships) and replace it with "BFS, HVN or BB".

Could you also add to the "other assets" section "Our coalition with Haven means we also use their mumble server to play a variety of games together. BFS and Haven now provide substitutes for eachother and practice together.".

Ok, I've signed up The Bully Boys (I think). Fundamentally, we acknowledge that we can't play as many games as a larger clan, and are at an inherent disadvantage as far as the scoreboard is concerned. Still, we would like to play scrimmages against good teams, and at least get points for the games we can play.

When we are competing with BFS captains and mostly BFS crew, our team name will be Black Flight Squadron. When we are competing with Haven captains and mostly Haven crew, we are flying as Haven. When it's half and half, we compete as "The Bully Boys". This is just so TOs know how to neatly label us in tournaments and events.

I do this with a sense of resignation, but also with a sense of happiness that we'll get more opportunity to test out some of our newer captains and crew against good competition. This system is, I'll admit, in many ways more well thought out and simple than the old cesports system idea was. Though it would be nice if the system was 100% fair, I suppose we'll have to work with what we've got.

I thought competitive GOI was headed in the right direction with the individual events themselves being the focus, but it seems that has changed.

I addressed my concerns with the old CESports "points-for-participation" system very extensively in discussion threads and skype conversations. If you want to see my thoughts more extensively anyone can go back and check them. I am exasperated and saddened at the thought of having to have the same arguments about an idea that I thought was safely dead and buried. To summarize: it burns out and/or alienates smaller clans, gives the advantage to clans that can play more, and is as such not legitimate as any sort of competition, let alone the focus of GOI competitive play.

On top of this, I can see no end of problems with clans bickering over what constitutes a scrimmage and a victory under this system. I also feel sorry for whatever two clans are going to have to ask for votes to compete in the tournament because they're latecomers or can't get together enough to grind points by constant scrimmaging.

It's very sad that this seems to be already underway when it really wouldn't be that hard to make a league where teams play an equal number of games, so numbers on the scoreboard would actually be meaningful and it would also make it fair on the smaller clans. Sure, it might not fill that desperate and inexplicable need to amalgamate all competitive play in GOI, but would that really be such a bad thing?

I'm probably not going to argue about this too much, because I already feel like I'm repeating myself, but I have to at least get my feelings about this out of my system, especially since I've spoken to many others who share my concerns.

This makes a lot of sense. I think everyone is in agreement The Cogs needs some kind of an overhaul, but this rule is something that could be implemented right away, and would solve the issue of it being basically meaningless to be in the upcomer's Cog from a certain point onwards.

Congratulations on your big win, Dutchmen. Looking forward to seeing more competitive matches from you guys.

I like the new look you've given our clan logo! I am looking forward to working together to take both our clans from strength to strength.

Just realized that with the MM's "seed" in the cogs, it actually would have been more advantageous for us to be one of the Newcomers. Kinda weird.
Yeah, doesn't make any sense to me. I understand having the worst seed out of the other quarterfinalists from season 1, but surely we should still be ahead of the newcomers? Meh, what's done is done.

I think the idea was that in our group of three, we were all guaranteed a spot in the Cogs, win or lose. If ZFG had turned up, one of the newcomers would've been ejected. So I guess it's a trade of position for safety?

Ofi, I agree with you in a general sense that it is important to communicate the "story" of every match and the personalities in the teams as a selling point for competitive play (though I absolutely loathe any smack talk that isn't completely tongue in cheek). You did tend to bury your points underneath profanity and aggression in that chat however, so Gilder interpreting what you said how he did is understandable. I have more of a problem with your attitude on the forums recently, but that's not the issue here.

Whatever our personal feelings, BFS probably won't be able to participate regardless because it's a very bad time for European players and there's the threat of Cogs conflict and the like.

Not only do we have a pretty gosh-darn awesome picture for our recruitment page, we also have a Sky Tournament Championship team and a really great community. Just drop me your steam name if you'd like to join The Bully Boys.

I can only echo Gilder's sentiments. We have nothing but respect for the Falconeers. Our best wishes are with Ofiach right now.

Also, this :D

Got an update for The Bully Boys clan info!

Other Assets: Our tournament team, Black Flight Squadron, are the Icarus Sky Tournament Champions! We are also champions of the Second Hungry Ducks Games. We are thus far the only team to bring a squid to competitive play (let alone win with it). The Bully Boys have a very active steamgroup to keep players up to date and we have our own voice chat server on ventrillo.

Also, there are 35 Bullies!

Suggestion- every team consults its members and determines 1-3 set times a week when they can meet up and have enough players for practice. They can then post in this thread or a new one what those times are. OP can then update with a list of all those teams, the times they say they're available, and a place where each team can be contacted.

Scheduling a scrimmage would then be as simple as looking at that list, talking with your own team to determine which times they can make, then contacting the other team.

I think something like this might be helpful for the new league system as well (and perhaps that was implied). It would save a lot of legwork in organizing matches.
