And reduces the turning speed Dementio.
Loch flak and mortar weren't favoured when tested, for example loch mortar only seems sensible against a galleon on a metamidion, assuming the target was somewhat aware of the reduced turning speed of the mortar, and difficult to employ even when they weren't.

18
That makes sense, and I see that it is definitely the right course of action to take. Thanks for the reassurance on all of those points Keyvias.

How long have you spent playing a week before the patch and then how much time after it's release? No offence meant, but testing the changes are important, as well as what you think of might work theoretically. Even when playing, it's hard to truly understand.

20
It was over performing because people weren't used to playing against it, and understanding the relevant weakness. Though I understand the reasons, it's quite sad that after making a change which was about to lead to an increase of complexity, we revert due to temporary effects.
It's now useless in the light carronade amongst other guns, and it was only definitely useful in the light carronade in all situations- in the gatling and mortar it had niche uses.

There's also the carronade fish which still has been left as a weak ship due to this change.

On another note, the mobula change is silly. Gat carro mortar for example doesn't work, amongst many other builds that don't involve artemis. I will say no more here for now.

News from the battlefield: Double loch gatling pyra is hilariously broken. Shreds permahull like nobodys business to say nothing of armor.

@Dev Bubbles I didn't mean specifically as a response to feedback, I meant to show your own views on the state of the game. The timing of these is before or right as you post devapp change notes. What are the problems you are trying to solve and gather feedback on? Stuff like this https://gunsoficarus.com/community/forum/index.php/topic,3420.0.html or this https://gunsoficarus.com/community/forum/index.php/topic,4115.msg70584.html

It's ridiculously easy to dodge too (pilot tools, etc), whilst inflicting damage against people who use this, though there are positions where it's not dodgeable, so it's useful, but not always applicable. Furthermore the self damage makes it difficult to use too. People are just adjusting to things, and it takes a while.

Specifically, double lochnagar gat is very silly and it already shredded armour very quickly ^_^

We have been testing the balance changes for 4 weeks now, each time with a team review of ALL the feedback that was submitted to us post each round of testing.

There are two issues with this finally being implemented for me:

Firstly, the patch was included even though there was a general bad feeling about the current changes. I appreciate that the patch needs to be introduced at some point, and that it's acceptable for people to be discontent, however I don't feel like it was time for finalisation.

Secondly, there should ideally be a report given for each change, how the feedback was analysed, and the processes which led to the evolution of new changes. This should not seem like a superfluous task, providing feedback to our feedback is extremely important in keeping us motivated and focused on the effects of the changes being tested, and gives guidance on what should be tested, and shows your understanding of the game, as those who ultimately have control over the balance.
I didn't feel like my own feedback would have been recognised, no matter how detailed and elegantly I was present it, and I didn't want to simply pass on ideas, for fear that it would be lost in the noise of the other feedback.

If I had seen closer and more consistent interaction, I would have gladly placed more faith and effort into working on this and helping improve the game using my knowledge and experience of the game, in its current state especially: which I imagine to be useful given the care of my analysis and understanding of the competitive and public scene, game mechanics and most other things GoI related, a result of the time I've spent here of recent, the variety of people I've interacted with, and careful thought that had been given to this.

However having said this, I apologise sincerely for giving insufficient feedback via email as of yet regarding the balance patch.

PS: In the notes, there's no mention of the jitter change for lochnagar, which is found in the ingame description

"You almost never need two fire tools."

This for example might be misunderstood, it should be clearer what is meant- one might presume it means two fire tools on a ship!
Also, heatsink is more the gunner's chemspray than fire extinguisher ^_^
The tip with regard to flares should probably emphasise the high number of fire stacks rather than fire damage.

There's probably more, but I can't read through them all atm

General Discussion / Re: How would YOU nerf the Mobula?
« on: March 17, 2016, 11:07:32 am »
For me a hwatcha fish stands no chance against a ranged or brawl mob
This is the only part of your post that I don't entirely agree on.. hwachafish can fight fairly well (approach as you would with a junker, potentially weakens their position vs your ally, obvious advantage when directly above mobula, increased if their mobility is reduced), though the mobula can make slight specialisations to increase its survivability.

You shouldn't be turning much in a close range engagement, mobulas simply don't need to.

Mobulas do need to turn at close range, that's part of their weakness at close range. You can see this by some quick analysis on the relevant gun arcs and the distance between the guns, if not by experience. Note the high top speed and slow angular acceleration, which means..

I'd personally prefer to see how a non-kill based round robin works out, especially because kills rules leverage some advantages for certain playstyles more than others.

Agreed, I think it would be less fun to watch if play styles were altered to focus on kills rather than winning, and it's more likely that the end result will be closer this way.

I don't think the squid buff will hurt that much.
Since I don't yet have the time, I will say the following, in the hope that it helps some people

  • Lochnagar reduces DPC by under 70% for most guns: most importantly, it decreases DPC of the heavy flak (as this was the reason for this idea).
  • For very many common and sensible mobula builds, we require a gatling at 4(right wing high), and an explosive weapon at 2(left wing low). Fixing the gatling at 4 then, we consider possible explosive weapons at 2. We neglect the consideration of the artemis here (metamob build), and the mortar (no overlap (though of course, both mortar and gat can be used vs the shame ship)). Now if we have a flak at 2, the arcs will overlap at 5 a distance from the ship which is greater than 5 times the distance between the gun at position 2 and the gun at position 4, just under 4 times for a banshee at 2.

I just thought I'd give a flavour of effects, I doubt this information will be helpful for many people as it is presented at the moment.

This would make that spire stronger, for example, though this is a fringe case- given the difficulty of use (a mobula with first strike advantage would be a lot more deadly than a minospire with first strike, given the minotaur's slow turning speed when slightly damaged, and the nature of the spire. I don't see the need for detailed analysis of this one case..

I want to make a detailed post with regard to all of the changes, resources need to be gathered though, if anyone is interested in the problems with the mobula changes, though most of it boils down to the mobula being near useless at close range against close range ships, and the restriction to meta builds whilst we were beginning to see a plethora of new, interesting mobula builds in both public and competitive matches.
Just to clarify, at higher levels, close ranges ships like the fish (not the pyramidion) will be able to approach mobulas with fair ease without too much danger, at which point the mobulas will be too vulnerable with the modified gun arcs (they already lose 1v1 against a fish at the higher levels of play, it would just be more difficult). [Insert tedious explanation of last point with information about gatling and explosive weapon(flak, banshee) gun arcs here upon request]. The exact same argument applies for lower level play, with a different explanation for the points made.
At mid level play, I am not entirely sure, though I don't think we see enough mobulas to induce this change. Even if it in some way improved play at this level (which I don't think it would), it wouldn't be worth the trade-off for the current complexity of viable mobula builds currently available, and its effects on mobula numbers in both higher and lower levels of play. I think this is a very bad proposed change for the game in general.

I'll post later about the other things, though the other change that really bugs me is the lochnagar one, since it's not a viable ammo choice for anything but the minotaur, and it spoils current builds, in particular the carronade fish (which isn't really considered overpowered or such), and drastically weakens lochnagar mines.

I agree with most of the feedback here, other than that concerning the squid, and whatever Solidus said  :D

This required me to assume that each ship is 100% from the clan signing up (as most are) unless stated otherwise in the sign up.

Really? You could have made a post stating this before.
Well, I'd rather forfeit our team's spot than have Ayetach's out, if it comes to it.

Also, adding Gene sis to our contacts.
