So does anyone fly squid as your primary ship?

Yeshan  Empire is your basic classical Asian style government, however unlike ancient China and Japan, the Empire is run by a council of Eunuchs who are the intellectual and philosophical elite.

Eunuchs,.. 'O che sciagura d'essere senza coglioni!'

If I remember my Chinese history correctly, the Ancient Chinese empires were, at some periods, ran by Eunuchs.
The last days of Han dynasty would be the best example. If I remember my Chinese history, Eunuchs held sway over the emperor before being overthrown by provincial warlords.

Do you guys think that the Yeshans know Confucius, and/or hold Confucian ideals in their government? The way muse set them up, it seems most likely.

Lol,  :D
But I think that not being able to see below the ship is a good thing.

Battles are won in the third dimension, and the blind-below allows fancy maneuvers like hydro-uppercut and escape-below-the-enemy.

Q&A / Re: Fire extinguisher vs. chem spray
« on: October 25, 2014, 07:03:09 am »
i did some field testing last night...

It is very difficult to keep every component chem sprayed. The moment you are away for a rebuild, a component will come off the  spray. That said, I think experienced pro engineers (like the most people on this thread) can keep the spray going.

Extinguisher is very easy to use. For a newbie player like me, the Extinguisher is more effective. And on a high engineering-difficulty ship like the mobula, extinguisher is probably more applicable. (but what is a mobula doing getting flamed? Dunno, but we came out of that fight alive)

If something is taking enough fire to get 10 stacks on it, you're not going to be able to save it with an extinguisher.

That's why it was a bad argument,  :D

I'm actually something of a hypocrite in that I use Chem Spray over Extinguisher. But I still did what I set out to do which was

make an argument for Fire Extinguisher (since its clear the Spray is more popular).

I gotta admit that Chem is better than Extinguisher, but I'll still tell my pub match crew to bring an extinguisher; I don't trust their sprays.

This is a bad argument, but the point of the extinguisher is to deal with the 10+ stacks.

And if the component is getting 20 flames, it's dead chem spray or extinguisher, except Extinguisher -> mailet will keep it alive a little longer.

The chem always shines with aware engis.
Chem definitely shines with competent engis. But once they miss a timing, chem can't stop the fire.

And most engis probably can't keep track of sprays mid-combat. I know that I can't (but I don't have much experience. I wouldn't know how much practice it would take)

Do you want 20 stacks of fire forming during your mallet cooldown or do you actually want to repair the component even if it has 7 stacks of fire?

I get your point, but...

20 stacks is hardly fair. The opponent would need to have a trifecta flame on you. Otherwise, the flamethrower will be disabled by the gunner or avoided by the pilot before the component receives 20 stacks.

In mid-fight, the component is taking damage from bullets and explosions. I'd rather get rid of 7 stacks of flame so the component isn't constantly dying. And it's too stressful to keep track of all the fire stacks between repairs and rebuilds.

The extinguisher -> mallet combo will usually (note the qualifier) keep the component alive mid-combat.

And in mid-combat, a live component is better than a dead one: a live hull will keep the ship alive, a live balloon will keep the ship afloat, a live engine will keep the ship moving, and a live gun will keep shooting.

Pre-combat and post-combat, the spray shines. Mid-combat, extinguisher shines.

Extinguisher does have its uses.

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: NEW! Steam Cloud Gun

Yea, can we get a few more "particle" weapons?

I think the ideas I've seen so far is:

tar smoke gun,
water gun  :P,
and this steam gun.

They would give the gunner a role in running away. Currently, the game lacks a weapon to disengage, and any of these weapons will be interesting.

I'll make an argument for Fire Extinguisher (since its clear the Spray is more popular).

Extinguisher has a short cool-down, and it completely kills the fire. The engineer can get a damaged, burning component back to near full health (extinguish, and in three seconds, a mallet). Also, the extinguisher also gives a very short fireproofing.

Chem-spray has a longer cool-down, and it only takes away three stacks of fire. If the engineer can spray every component of the ship, great. But if the engineer misses a component (because they were fixing the hull, etc.), the engineer has no choice but to let the component burn out and rebuild later. If the burning component is the hull, the ship will take heavy perma-damage.

In mid fight, the extinguisher engineer has the greater advantage by brining a burning engine/hull/balloon to full brim of health.

Q&A / How to approach a Galleon
« on: October 23, 2014, 10:25:28 pm »
I played a CP against a galleon today, feels like there is no good way to close the distance with the galleon.

Can't approach its sides. Medium guns will disable everything.
Can approach the front, but we're detected immediately.
Can't approach the aft, I've been mined, flamed, and harpoon/moonshine-rammed before, and I'd rather not repeat the experience.
(harpoon/moonshine is cheesy, but I think it's an instakill)

So, experienced players and competitive pros, how do you approach a galleon?

Can whatever Hamster said be canon?  :D

Yea, I'm pretty sure the "Good Guy" faction will be up to the player to decide.

We haven't mentioned the Arashi league yet.

They are described as
Quote
The small tribal families, warbands, and rag tag groups are fiercely independent

So, some sort of loose confederation? Or like the pirates in the Pirates of the Caribbean, held together by a vague code of conduct?

Up till now, I have thought of the Order as the good guys. (Well, it is the "Order")

Well, if they are like society in The Brave New World and We, I don't think I like them anymore.

But how would the Order maintain control over a agricultural population?

The Order is primarily agricultural, which would suggest a decentralized population. I am not convinced that a strong, fascist, central government can maintain control over the Chaladon.

The alternative that I can think of is that the Order's citizens are ideological to the point of religion. But religion was never mentioned in the World of Icarus, so... does anybody have a good explanation?

I'd think the mercantile guild as an alliance of machiavellian states. Despotic, opportunistic, distrusting states held together under profit. Similar to medieval Italy.

And Chaladon, I haven't got a clue. They seem to have some sort of a Utopian community.

I like your idea of the Yesha being similar to Han China. That would make them a strong, powerful "empire"

I know Anglea is viking-like, but I'd like to imagine a republican state safe in the northern mountains, little more organized than tribal-elections.

I've seen a squid equipped with mercury field and flak that was quite devastating on the dunes.

It'd snipe, run, and repeat. Our pyramidions could never catch him.

But yea, squids are most effective when they get close and engage on the blind side. It's easier to stay out of the gun arc near the enemy.

The forum seems to be missing a thread on Government. As a political science nerd, I couldn't resist a thread on that.

So, how are the factions governed?

It's clear that the Anglean Republic has a representative government of some form (Republic is in the name.)
I'd assume that the Yesha Empire has some form of an emperor and central government.
The Fjord Baronies, I imagine, would have a hereditary oligarchy.

Other factions are unclear on how they are governed.

It'd be interesting to imagine how these factions would be governed, if they are not governed at all.

Thank you for reading,  :)
