Q&A / Re: Incendiary Rounds
« on: January 19, 2015, 08:19:33 pm »
Considering how easily chem-spray negates it, it's probably my least-used ammo type, as there's no situation in which it really excels, and many in which it hurts overall performance.

I occasionally will have it brought for the light carronade, in which case it's used to help force engineers to make hard choices. Fix the balloon, and chem later, and risk it burning, or chem now, and have to rebuild twice. That's what fire's good for in GOI-forcing optimal/imperfect repair cycles, and making pilots have to pick what parts of their ship they're willing to sacrifice.

The Mobula is guild.

The Spire is baronies.

General Discussion / Re: Exactly how big is our roleplay community?

I kinda consider myself, a member, as is most of my clan. We write short fiction, and have pretty defined character backgrounds, but the nature of Guns makes RP like you'd find in an MMO difficult. From what I've seen, we're mostly scattered individuals with sporadic bursts of lore, though there was a pretty big tournament (the Aerodrome) recently which I took part in, which had a pretty strong-though "On the side" RP section.

It actually has a 60 or 65 degree upward arc. (Can't remember which.)

Usually, though, you're firing at about 30ish.

The Lounge / Re: Ship Names
« on: January 04, 2015, 01:37:31 pm »
Alright, big secret time-

All of my ship names, along with my clan name, are references to a semi-obscure table-top RPG by White Wolf called Exalted, which I and most of my clan play. Now that that's out:

Goldfish: Florivet-A demon pirate who sails a boat made out of his bones that travels land as easily as water, enjoys booze and women, and used to be a protector of forbidden knowledge until one day he decided "Fuck it, I'm going to go become a ship." And so he did. Canon recurring NPC in a campaign I run, and the party's main source of transport.

Squid: Beauteous Wasp- Flying, inhumanly beautiful demonic wasps, servants of Florivet, who are actually pretty chill, and just want to find worthy riders. (Not like that. Pervert.) The Squid's a mini-goldfish, so it's named after Florivet's souls/servants/progeny.

Junker: Vanileth- The God of Artificial Flight in the Celestial Bureaucracy. Fitting, for the ship that looks most "classic zeppelin."

Pyramideon: Five-Metal Shrike-Rogue Airship/AI/God-Trapped in an titan-slaying airship. Pyramideons are fast, powerful, and pack a good forward punch. Also, they look like a shrike. Pointy.

Galleon: Brass Leviathan- Named after *another* rogue AI/God, this one aquatic (the people who created these had a bit of a problem), the Brass Leviathan is a massive submarine that haunts the Western Oceans in Exalted, occasionally killing random ship. The Galleon is the only playable ship that I would call a "Leviathan" and the name is cool as hell for a steampunk airship.

Mobula: Kimbery- Named for one of the Lords of Hell/Titans, who takes the shape of an infinitely large ocean which is both poisonous, and acidic. I don't know how it works either. The Mobula is a mean, huge, whale-like ship, so it gets the name of a corrosive sea. According to Rob and Dan, it sounds like a town in England.

Spire: Sword of Creation- In Exalted, the Sword of Creation is a series of magical towers that form a defense network, if controlled, that can raze cities with lasers from on high. It is not an actual sword. The Spire, however, sorta looks like a sword, if you squint hard enough after enough moonshine. It also is capable of razing enemies from on high.

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Improvements for this game

Yeah. I could have really gone for that pause during my VIP match in Aerodrome, and I don't think I was alone in that.  I think a rule like "no one is allowed to move ships until everyone has sounded off to refs, and confirmed" would be nice.

Triple carro/double Artemis works pretty well.

You could also use it to pre-destroy your heavy gun if you're going up against a disabling ship, bring it up to healing in one hit, then go into battle like that.

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Carronades
« on: December 05, 2014, 01:22:29 am »
Honestly, if you're going to do anything to affect the balance of Carronades, perhaps a Drogue Chute buff would be the best thing. It seems to be little used tool, and it would be the easiest way to nerf them without dramatically impacting balance.

Q&A / Re: Good ship for a new crew?
« on: December 03, 2014, 07:01:53 pm »
20% is hardly nothing. It's more benefit than you're likely to get from an additional ammo type. (You can easily get away with lesmok and normal), then you add the benefit of a fire control tool if things go south.

Carro/Flame pyra is probably the most truly noob-proof ship build. It takes *effort* to screw one of those up.

Basic build is Flamer in 1, Light Carronade in 2, and flamer in 3. Slot 4 is up to you-go flare, perhaps. If you angle your ship, you can get both flamers, and your carronade on target at the same time. Don't ram unless their hull is down, and they're on the ground, just keep your ship in range and cook. You've got good downward arcs on the flamers, so park at their balloon height.

It works best with two buff engis and the main, IMO, but you can take a single gunner if it's hard to explain how gungineers work.

Gameplay / Re: Pulsing Kerosene
« on: November 30, 2014, 02:58:48 pm »
I'll try to find the sheet with the calculations, but pulsed moonshine is faster. You burn engines down to 25%, stop the moonshine, let an engi mallet them back up, wait for a second or so, then start the burn again.

From the Journal of Beckett Hafgufa:

I'm a privateer now. At least that's what the contract says.

The Pact has deep pockets, and I guess I won some gratitude that day in the dunes.  Funny, that a man gets more honor for killing someone than for selling necessities.

I don't care. I'm still a merchant.

The boss asked me to keep the contract. The wire was full of justifications. "Public Face" "Good advertisement" and "debts to be paid, great and small." Since he's paying for the restoration of my ship, I guess I can't argue. Not on top of everything else I owe. Poor Florivet. Keiran looks ready to bash anyone who mangles the repair job over the head with a mallet. Poor yard dogs.

So the short version is I'm keeping the contract. Worse, I'm going North.

Anglea. My old home. I had hoped never to get within a hundred mile radius of it. I've already had enough snow for a lifetime. Don't need more.

At least I'm probably not going to be fighting. First mission is to ferry a resource convoy to one of our deployments. We're behind friendly lines, and not expected to see real fighting. In the end, I'm still just a merchant. Same as before. We've got mercenary support, but they're probably just for show. Rorin's staying behind-survived the whole damn battle, then falls sick of Yeshan flu. Some people have none of the right luck.

Anyway, we took on one of our newer hires. Arthur something. Bright and eager. Makes my teeth ache.

I'm hoping for some quiet, after that last job.

What sort of snake could get this far behind the Pact's lines, anyway?

Captain Beckett Hafgufa

Most delayed signup every, but after seeing the RP trailer for last week's matches, I'd just like to toss my name up in the "willing to do voice work" list. Because they're pretty cool.
