Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Audio Feedback When Taking Gating Fire
« on: September 10, 2014, 11:41:49 am »
Yes audible distance for guns being fired definetly need to be increased. It's weird how gunners can hear the impact sounds of their guns but the people being hit can't hear the gun shot.

I'm up for the impact noises but hearing the weapons being fired at you could become damn near deafening in a 3 vs 3 if all six ships are near each other.

Perhaps, but it would also add to the immersion.

If you're taking fire from 2 galleon broadsides I'd like to having some deafening explosions to go with the shaking.

Esp with stuff like lumberjacks hitting the balloon too, those things are so sneaky you only get a dull "thump" sound.

Also heavy flaks should make an enormous explosive sound as they tear your ship apart.

I think there should be a warning klaxon.

Best: the game is fun, no way around it.
Worst: I rarely get to play the game that is fun.

Er, what?

I'm not really sure what you're suggesting here.

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Ask captain before afk kick

I play on a 3 year old nongaming laptop - it only runs on min settings, and even then has trouble with the cloudier maps (labyrinth, any 3v3 or 4v4 map).

I lag when I zone in, literally for about 20 seconds as the components load - I've learned to stare at the ground until the lag passes to make it go faster - if I'm looking at the environment, it lags for longer and sometimes crashes.

However I've never once had the afk kick be an issue.

Please also note: if it is taking a long time to load, this is a HD issue rather than a processor/graphics card issue. Please buy a new hard drive, those are fairly cheap (even for a laptop).

Also: as far as I've noticed AI crew continues to function until the player fully zones in and starts moving, so its not like the ship is even undermanned.

Not really a joke, but I thought it was odd that engineers have both "Not a Scratch" and "Just a Scratch" as achievements.

Why does your engineer have bullet holes?

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: hide ship loadouts from the enemy team
« on: September 02, 2014, 05:41:55 pm »
I think it would be an interesting option - but definitely as an option. I don't think it would be a good forced setting. Perhaps it could work in matchmaking.

I do believe we'd see a ton of safe ships and far fewer experimentation in those games - but only in highly competitive settings.

I think it is interesting to let teams experiment to see what could work - perhaps against a variety of combinations.

For example if you're also outmatched (and you don't know it) you'd have to scramble to see how to get your poor loadouts to work, it could lead to some more out of the box strategies, if not builds.

General Discussion / Re: What exactly is "hull"...
« on: September 02, 2014, 05:37:03 pm »
Hmm, ever since first being an engineer I've always seen hull refer to the permahull, while armor or hull armor is the well, hull armor.

If someone refers to the hull armor as "hull" I am quick to remind them.

I once had a weird conversation where I said squid hull is pretty high and someone kept telling me it was the lowest in the game until I asked if he meant armor instead...

Hull = permahull! >:O

You are all insane.

Also it would be nice to have more than one face type for each gender.

so at this point, are you actually interested in seeing the sort of random hazards like random chance of lightning to the ship anywhere on the map, or sudden gust of wind to just your ship based on where you are on the map, or are you just furthering your point?

Hmm I dunno. I mean the apocalypse map idea is I guess the most "random" that I had.

I guess you could theoretically see the meteors coming, maybe it would be neat if they were like slow moving, giant bombs instead of super fast unavoidable stuff. Not sure if something like this is possible with the game engine though, even though it would be neat.

I think having wind buffet your ship would be interesting if you could see it - sort of like how the edge of map wind works. That way you can tell what you're doing.

I hope these effects aren't super catastrophic - having wind strong enough to just immediately throw you into the ground/wall would be kind of pointless, but something like a headwind or a persistent wind pushing in one direction would lead to interesting gameplay (and stuff like being blown sideways and strafing).

@pandatopia I can sort of understand how the only truly balanced matchup will be mirror match, by definition.

Ah no way, I was making a tongue in cheek joke lol. Please don't anyone think final destination is where anyone (I hope) wants the game to be headed towards.

For example one of the greatest examples of balanced, great team pvp is Dota/2, and that game is COMPLETELY unbalanced! Unbalanced maps, unbalanced lanes, unbalanced jungle spawns, unbalanced heroes, impossible to mirror match, etc, etc. And yet it is "balanced".

Similarly, GoI maps are asymmetrical, have random elements, asymmetrical spawns, complete freedom in ship choice, etc. This is great, and at the same time I think weather effects can add interesting obstacles or change up the builds we see.

I also get the point that randomness is bad at times, but I think that is a choice that people can make regarding what they want in their map.

Going back to smash, yes it is really unfair if you get a snorlax to the face, or land on a bobomb, but it is also hilarious and fun.

So I think at some point not everything needs to have a balance mindset.
