The Docks / Re: Padding out the friends list
« on: August 20, 2013, 05:22:57 pm »
I think he's referring to what we call "stacked". And my suggestion to you, Eukari, is find a clan to join. Or, if you'd like, build your own.

Odd hours and uneven play (I also play WoW) means that I likely don't have the temporal capital to spend on a clan. I'm mainly just looking to have enough friends that, whenever I can log on, there's at least one friendly face to rock with/die alongside.

neboo- Great! I'll make sure you're added when I get home.

The Docks / Padding out the friends list
« on: August 20, 2013, 03:43:12 pm »
Heyo. Been playing the game for a while, and I've just about had it up to here with dealing with random parties. Yeah, it's a good way to make new friends and I totally have...but I'm sick of waiting in a lobby for 20 minutes so that I can fill out a PuG ship to take on the two-boat pre-made sitting across the color barrier.

In short, I want to be that pre-made.

So, who could use a moderately skilled and skillfully moderate gunner/pilot*/engineer? Shoot me a friend invite and let's take the skies by storm!

*Just a warning, getting on a ship I'm piloting is legally considered a suicide-pact.

Gameplay / Re: Calculating distance

That's an interesting idea. It could certainly see use as an alternate pilot tool for Gunners to use, rather than just everyone bringing a spyglass.

My one concern is that most combat, barring Mercury/Lumberjack builds, seems to take place rather close these days. It wouldn't be much use for a brawler (if you're too far to know how far you are, you're too far), except maybe for figuring out whether the enemy ship can shoot you while you move into cover...actually, that does sound useful.

2 galleons held together with duck tape?
A galleon with a Squid taped to the back. Upside-down.

It would be interesting to see an asymmetric mode where several smaller ships go up against one big one. Something like an ur-Galleon that crews eight vs. two regular sized ships.

Guides / Re: Aboard a Junker

Another great guide! I flew a Junker last night in a few matches and did pretty dismally; just from reading this, I know I'll do better next time.

Also, if you're taking suggestions on what ship to do a guide for next...I've had my eye on the Mobula for a while, and would love to see an in-depth look at it.  ;D

Q&A / Re: Clan tags
« on: August 18, 2013, 08:38:11 pm »
There should be a tab on the top left of the main screen that says "Social." If you click on that, it should have your name in the middle, with a "Change" button nearby. You can use that to set a clan tag. (or change your own name, which you can do twice) It's either "Social" or the one next to it...that I can't remember.

Guides / Re: Guide Requests

I wasn't referring to the player's roll on a ship, I was referring to the ship's roll in a team (ie disabler, brawler, hull stripper, long range support, finishing blow, scout, ect...).

This would be quite useful for people looking to step beyond the "Point guns at enemy, repeat" level of play.

I'd also like to see a guide to good ship pairings, as in "What goes good with a Junker?" or "What's the best ship for supporting a Mobula/Galleon?" or "What's a good 3v3 lineup, and what sort of guns should we all bring?" As a captain, I think it would be a great way to help improve intra-team cooperation to know what I can do to compliment my teammate(s) choice of ship.

I love all of these.

Haha, thanks! Coming up with ship names is one of my favorite parts of the game.

I'm a big "Halo" fan, so I've also come up with a list names from that series that I'd use for my ships:
  • Junker- Spirit of Fire
  • Goldfish- In Amber Clad
  • Spire- Pillar of Autumn
  • Galleon- Truth and Reconciliation (don't know if this'll fit the character limit; if not, then it's Shadow of Intent)
  • Squid- Infinity
  • Pyramidion- Forward Unto Dawn
  • Mobula- Long Night of Solace

I'd actually love to see a ship like that in-game. You could give it a lot of fore- and aft-firepower (maybe three light guns forward, two back...or even a rear-facing heavy gun, which is something we've not seen before) and make it have great acceleration, but poor turning. The balloon would be somewhat vulnerable, being on both sides, but would serve to protect the central components. Thus, the enemy would need to enter your firing arcs to get a clear shot.

Because I am a moron, I made a whole new (unnecessary) thread for this elsewhere. We will now commence pretending I did not! Good day!

My (current) ship names:
  • Junker- Not For Hire
Named after a riverboat from Phillip Jose Farmer's "Riverworld" series.
  • Goldfish- Southern Sun
Technically named after the ship from the awful movie "Space Mutiny," as seen in the amazing Mystery Science Theater 3000. I just rather liked the way it sounded, and it fit the autumnal colors of the 'Fish.
  • Spire- Because It's There
After George Mallory's (in)famous response as to why he climbed Mount Everest.
  • Galleon- Henry the Navigator
After the king of Portugal who helped jump-start the Age of Discovery.
  • Squid- Fortunate Son
Another one I just liked the sound of. You also need to be pretty lucky (or crazy) to fly a Squid.
  • Pyramidion- Rhamses II
    Duh.
  • Mobula- Stavromula Beta
She's build like a steakhouse, but she handles like a bistro.

General Discussion / Favorite ship names?
« on: August 18, 2013, 05:41:49 pm »
Heyo. So, one of my absolute favorite bits of GoIO is that you get to name your airships. Combined with the custom loadouts, it gives such a feeling of ownership over the boat that you wouldn't get otherwise. One of the things I love when playing PuGs is to see what other people have named their vessels; some are funny, some awesome and some...not so great. I've always felt pretty proud of my ship-naming prowess; finding the right name for each boat is a fun challenge!

So, what do people like to name their ships? Do you have unique names for each one, or is it one-for-all? Do you change the name with a different build? (one for brawling, one for mining?) Please tell!

My (current) ship names:
  • Junker- Not For Hire
  • Goldfish- Southern Sun
  • Spire- Because It's There
  • Galleon- Journey To Babel
  • Squid- Retreat From Eden
  • Pyramidion- Rhamses II
  • Mobula- Stavromula Beta*
