Community Events / Back To Basics!! A new weekly event!
« on: January 18, 2016, 04:45:34 pm »
Hello Hello!
I wanted to let everyone here know about a new event starting up soon. Back To Basics!! A quick and clean practice event. We'll be starting on January 31st, and we'll be doing it again every Sunday starting at 2pm EST.

The plan is to have every team play two matches a day. Two best of one match ups if you'd like to think of it that way. One thing we WON'T be doing however, is a tournament bracket. That's right, no ladder to climb, no prizes to win, no championship matches.Just good practice. Matches will be streamed, but this is to allow teams to review their performance. Our goal is to make this as casual and simple as possible, so that teams have a safe place to practice.

On that note: If anyone wants to use this as a warmup for SCS, just let us know and we'll do our best to get your matches done quickly so you're not negatively impacted by the time.

While we're organized around 2v2 deathmatches, teams are encouraged to sign up both as single ships and as double ships! We'll do our best to make sure everyone can participate. The current ruleset can be found HERE!
Bunches of thanks to KitKat for doin' all the hard work so far ;) and thanks BoCA for making this possible!

Signups start next Tuesday, January 26th. The plan is to have a supernacular 31st so I hope to see everyone then!

Skies will define unorthodox setups as he sees fit. No reason to attack him for it. If you feel your builds are "unorthodox" then good for you. If you want to discuss the meta, start a new thread for it. Or revive an old one, either way. Until then:

I get the feeling that people are reading too much into this.

Oh, and given the nature of some of the comments on this thread, I'd like to ask everyone to please review this: http://gunsoficarus.com/community-standards/

It was kinda supposed to help regulate the community and make sure the forum is a safe place to float ideas.

Borrowed a laptop and a wifi signal just for this community. Right, well, here's my opinion on the matter:

Titles are gaudy. That's about it. I don't like the idea of giving out titles because I don't want to have to see them. Won't use them myself either. Would've greatly preferred paint for my ships or something.

Someone might like it. And that's all what we can say about it. I would recommend to lock this thread to prevent some more unnecessary offtopic flamewars. We all got the announcement.

Ya, don't do this. I haven't even gotten to state my opinion on the matter due to internet problems (typing this from my phone). Those "flame wars" are really just one guy that the moderators don't seem to be taking action against e.g. censoring obscene language. There's no reason we can't have an intelligent conversation about it.

With all due respect: Urz has broken the Code of Conduct multiple times today (well... yesterday 'cause midnight) is this really not going to be dealt with?

Maybe I am reading your posts wrong. I feel like you have animosity towards this subject. If I had to guess (which I will) I would say the purpose / reasoning is to get more people to sign up to SCS...

I just, I don't understand this, how is me asking for information a bad thing? Am I a bit annoyed, ya. I asked before I went to work and now I just really want to go to bed, but I still haven't gotten what I would qualify as an answer. Is it really too much to ask for an explicit "we felt this would be a good thing because X, Y, and Z"?

It has been over twelve hours so I'll ask this again, and if I don't have a response in the next few hours then I'll take my best guess: What is the reasoning behind this? Why make it a thing? For the love of GoIO, stop talking in circles and just answer me honestly.

A couple points to clarify: I have not yet stated an opinion on this matter, only asked for clarification. The answer to my second question is not actually stated in the op unless the answer is "to give back to players that have already participated by giving an award to people who participate in the future" which is logically silly (and that is an opinion.) Last but not least, its rather difficult to look too much into this. It's pretty simple. Now can I please get an honest and clear answer to my second question, so that I can express my opinions later and in an intelligent manner.

I have two simple questions. 1) who thought this was a good idea?  2) why did they think this was a good idea?

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Fluid level system or visible MMR
« on: December 25, 2015, 09:26:35 pm »
MMR is not accurate... I'm sure anyone who actually posts on forums has seen where it falls apart. Muse took a rating system designed for single player games and applied it to GOIO, seemingly without modifying the equations behind the system to work with such a coordination-heavy game. I'm not sure how visible I would like it to be, but for now that's irrelevant.. With MMR as unrepresentative as it is, the current leveling system is better; if only because it doesn't try to pretend to be something it isn't.

P.S. Happy Holidays!

I'm confused.. The only lock out rule I see in the ruleset says: "Ship loadouts are locked 30 seconds before lobby time runs out. A change during that time will result in a forfeit." So.. what happened?

I'm hoping to try to get a Duck team in next weekend.. but this worries me.

Sidenote: while I'm a little fuzzy on what happened, expecting a team to actively watch a stream in order for you to stay organized is unreasonable. Not difficult; but not something that should be expected.

Gameplay / Re: The new Minotaur
« on: November 20, 2015, 07:59:19 pm »
I played one game this evening. Then I had to take a break out of frustration. I flew a mid-range junker with a level 1 Pyramidian ally (who tried his darnedest, but was a level 2 engineer... sigh). Our opposition was a Hwatcha Goldfish and a Galleon with minotaurs. Everyone on the Galleon crew was under level 10, yet they dominated the match. My crew consisted of a normal friend I play with often and two novices (level 2 and 7, I believe). Those novices ragequit five minutes into the game because 'I wasn't giving them angles' because of constant minotaur hits. We proceeded to get wrecked to the tune of 4 to 1 until two solid players joined me and we brought the game back to 4 to 4. But we ultimately lost. Why? The minotaur. The @#%@# minotaur, which I already hated, but now I hate even more because it drove away my noob crew and put me at a supreme disadvantage for more than half the match. "Why, Atruejedi! Why didn't you use pilot tools to counter the bounce?" I was asked. I did. I used tons of kerosene, and I tried to time it properly. But it didn't matter. "But why fly a junker at all, then, Atruejedi? They are prime minotaur targets!" Do you want me to fly a more complex ship with people brand new to the game? No, thanks. The novices didn't repair dependably and the AI crew wasn't much better. The match went on for 40 or so minutes as my ally ran from place to place as I begged him to stay alive (he died 4 times by the end with zero kills) and tried to kill the enemy ships. I did destroy four of them, but the minotaurs made my life hell.

Is anyone familiar with Team Fortress 2? Minotaurs are like the items in that game that take control away from the player, and NO ONE ENJOYS THAT. Valve completely nerfed the baseball bat that immobilized players because of the outrage. How is the minotaur not suffering the same backlash? People love USING it, but no one enjoys fighting AGAINST it. It's the most rage-inducing weapon in the game, first an all-too-weak-yet-evil weapon, and now an extremely effective and therefore even more annoying weapon!

THE RAGE IS REAL.

Wait...
Waitaminute..
I was in that match
What you say isn't entirely true.

You were in a junker that had a gat/flak side I believe. Very little disable. I think you only had a front artemis. The reason the match took so long was that the galleon wasn't really doing anything. Certainly not "dominating." So ya, it took a hwachafish I think 15-20 minutes to get 3 kills.. Then we almost exclusively targeted your junker. And Kudos to you and your crew, it just wouldn't die.. at all.. like, damn, you had some good engies over there. Our pilot made a couple mistakes, and when you were able to capitalize on them, you got a couple kills on us. After we went down (and reliable hwachas stopped disabling you) is when you were able to kill the galleon. After the 50ish minute mark (the match took about 55 mins btw) we decided to switch back to the pyra to just get a kill and end it. which happened. And again, they had a damn good engie.. Fehnril? something along those lines (If you see this let me know). So ya, it took a good long while, but considering the two heavy hitters were a hwachafish and a gat/flak junker, I'm not too concerned.

I wouldn't say it has control of my ship. I do. Even if it bumps me around.. meh. I'll deal with it, I know how to get my ship pointed the way I want it. With that said, honestly, I don't think anyone who brings the Mino solely for the push effect is too serious about it. It'll push an enemy a little bit out of arc, sure, but that's not what I need a gun to be able to do. Particularly not a heavy weapon. While the push effect is a nice little bonus to help deal with a charging enemy, what matters is really the damage. So, as long as a Mino gunner is mistakenly aiming for my balloon, I'll deal with it and be glad it's not any other heavy weapon.

Community Events / Re: A not-SCS idea.
« on: November 12, 2015, 12:03:09 pm »
People barely sign up for SCS because SCS is just a joke right now. SCS used to be a good place to practice, but not anymore. Now it's just too full of itself. If something like this idea is what it takes to get SCS back on track, I say try it. I miss being able to use SCS to practice for real competitive events. Also, if no one showed up in events where silly ideas were tried, perhaps that's because no one wants them?
