General Discussion / Re: Bartle's Taxonomy Ignored?
« on: May 31, 2017, 04:51:36 pm »
I made reference to this in a prior post:
https://gunsoficarus.com/community/forum/index.php/topic,4367.msg73532.html#msg73532

Extra Credits does point out that not all games can be all things to all players and that the really good ones focus on one or two.

Guns of Icarus in my eyes supports both the Social and Killer paradigm. The game dynamics require the players to rely on their crew/captain thus encouraging communication. Beyond that the voice chat, friends list, and occasional heavy handed moderation keeps the community a decent place to hang out in. Given the long lobby times of the past, it was a nice place to socialize.

Sky Wolf already covered the Killers so I won't go more into that.

When I am in the mood to be social and/or grind my fellow man into the dirt and drink deep of his tears I play Guns of Icarus. When I am in the mood to explore or relax with some mindless grinding I play different games.

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Vote Kick for Custom Lobbies
« on: May 30, 2017, 05:48:30 pm »
Since Muse won't implement Kick the only work around available to us is to make a custom Lobby, then invite every one from the old lobby to the new one except the offending player. We could ask Muse to add features to stream line this process. Like a "make custom lobby and invite people from this lobby" button. It doesn't have to be a button it could be a text box macro.

sqrt(n)         where n >= 0
i*sqrt(-1*n) where n  <  0

If numbers can be imaginary how can we tell if anything is real?

I ban Queso's mind for overruling the desires of Queso's body.

Laziness is always a common complaint. When you compare your 20year work history to some teenager just entering the labor market, it is easy to feel superior. Same with the need for imitate gratification. The next generation will not have known a time where entertainment didn't happen on their schedule. Those of us who had to wake up early for our Saturday morning cartoons are going to feel a bit of jealousy towards this.

What will my specific offspring do to to piss me off in 10 to 15 years (he is 2 right now)?

I can foresee instances where a novice captain leaves the helm in full throttle forward to shoot a gun, only to autopilot into the side of a mountain.

Is there a more satisfying feeling than watching a mercury shot that was fried while a H Flack Mk2 shot was in the air land milliseconds before the heavy flack with just enough piercing to drop the enemy's hull armor?

Because we like the community that is built around Guns of Icarus.

If you are outnumbered is there any situation where a drive up the center would make sense?

I don't know but sometimes our purpose ends up being an example to others of what not to do.

Did you just imply that Shink became the scapegoat for of the Guns of Icarus Community because he was the best adapted for that particular roll in the ecosystem, and that there were a bunch of other scapegoats who once competed with Shink but were ultimately found wanting and eliminated?

With regards to Shink, it is not our lot to question why, it is our lot to do and blame.

How important is it for an internet community have someone like Shink to cover for all their blaming needs?

I wasn't saying change the dammage type to flame. I was saying keep the damage type as flechette and change the clip size and refire to output a continuous stream of dammage as opposed to the quick bursts of damage like the current cannonades do. Also, and I can't overstate this, flying razor blades.

How about making the Carronade M2 still fill the close range balloon pop role but change its shooting characteristics to streaming damage like the flame thrower. Instead of liquid fire it throws out a steady stream of aerodynamic razor blades.

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: How about an op ship or weapon?

I think what you are asking for is a First Order Optimal strategy for low skill levels. Something like the COD noob tube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EitZRLt2G3w
Something that will give a novice player a 1 in 50 chance of scoring a lucky kill on veteran players so they don't end matches with a big goose egg for score. The problem is COD was designed around 500 kill matches and GOI was designed around 5 kill matches. Also with the engineering game being what it is Muse would not make a mechanic that would nullify the effect of good engineering like instant kill weapons.
The best GOI has right now it the MantiGoldfish.

The ship is reasonably tough, maneuverable, and has wide gun arcs. If the pilot is unskilled and overshoots the target the crew can compensate by switching to the side guns.

The Mantcore makes a satisfying amount of explosions and prevents the enemy ship from shooting back. Its max range range,  lack of shot drop, and lack of arming time make it good for the low skill gunner

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Guided missiles are too well guided
« on: May 03, 2017, 04:05:53 pm »
I think it should be a long range hwacha with less DPS. It should have a low hit percentage at long range owing to the erratic flight characteristics. Also it will force the player to stick on the gun while the missiles are in flight instead of the Dump and scoot Hwacha usage we see a these days. There are also interesting things a gunner could do with arching shots around obstacles or tracking fast moving targets.

Feedback and Suggestions / Guided missiles are too well guided
« on: May 03, 2017, 03:20:04 pm »
As I understand it the Tempest missile guidance system works like this:

When the user is on the gun the game does a raycast hit scan to detect the point in the world that the user's aim dot is over.
If the angle between the missile's forward vector and the vector form the missile to the aim point is greater than the missile's turn rate, the missile will turn towards the aim point.
In real world terms this functions like a laser guided missile. Only better since the missile will never loose the targeting dot, even if it passes the target.

I would like the guidance to work more like the more primitive wire guidance systems.
The algorithm that describes it as follows:
The game calculates the angle difference between the guns's forward vector and the vector from the gun to the missile.
If that angle is greater than a buffer zone the missile will turn by its turn rate in the direction of the ray cast from the gun's forward vector.

Making this change would cause the missiles to fly more erratically, eliminate their ability to loop back and hit a target they missed, move the technology level back to the 1940's instead of the 1960's, and give the weapons a higher skill ceiling to use effectively.
