General Discussion / Re: Tutorial Survey

Guns of Icarus Online Player Tutorial Survey:

    What level are you? (Gunner/Engineer/Pilot)
9/6/5

How many matches have you played?
533

Have you played the current tutorials already?
If you have not, please play them. If you have already and have time, please play them again to refresh your memory. It took me about 15 minutes to play through all of them.
I have played them again just for this survey

Were any of the tutorials too long?  Please specify.
They were pretty good in length

What did you like most about the tutorials?
That it explained the different tools the different classes had rather well

What did you find confusing about the tutorials?
nothing, they were pretty selfexplanatory

What was your biggest misconception about how the game works when you first started playing?
That the Gunner was useless because engis could shoot too

What was your biggest misconception about how the game works after you finished the tutorials?
That ammotypes were wierd and useless, i just kept with regular ammo

Are there any important concepts that new players should know, but the Tutorials do not mention?
How the game works outside of a match. Changing classes or equipment is never mentioned and is often unknown to new players. Leavecount, Progress, Social tab and so on are not explained.

Have you read the in-game manual?
yes

Did you know that the in-game manual is expanded as you unlock new Achievements?
yes, and i realized the map-achieves are really hard to get

Please leave any other comments or suggestions regarding the Tutorials, educating new players, or the first time player experience.
For Gunner: There is nothing on Medium Weapons in the Tutorials, and not all small weapons are mentioned. Also, while early weapons like the flamer or carronade have text saying what they do, late weapons like the mortar or sniper don't. Also, I would find it useful to show some weapon combinations that are common (for example gat/mortar, hades/artemis etc.). Lastly, newer players don't know what ammotype to use on which gun, so a firing range, as suggested on the forums by somebody would be useful.

For Engineer: Maybe the Tutorials should mention, which engines are the turning engines and which is the speed engine. Also, it should be mentioned that the hull and the balloon are highest priority, then the engines and then the guns, as many newer players do not know this.

For Pilot: The tutorial should tell newer players that they should first play as gunners or engis before flying a ship. It should also instruct them to try the different ships in practice mode before flying them on their own

The Manual on the maps should include information on what the map is like. Labyrinth for example: Bad visibility, many obstacles, close range. Battle on the dunes: good visibility, barely any obstacles, very long range

Feedback and Suggestions / Clan tags
« on: February 08, 2014, 03:03:23 pm »
I think it would be useful to have an option in the Social tab to display all players using the same clan-tag as the Player. This would allow players in a clan to always be able to see how many people the clan has, they could easily play with people of the clan and see if there are new clanmembers. Also, it would simplify creating clan-events.
Without this, players who want these benefits have to befriend all their clanmembers, but friends who aren't in that clan are sort of drowned in clanmembers in the friendslist. Also, new clanmembers aren't in the list, so barely anyone of their clan can play with them.
What do you guys think of a clanlisting in the Social tab?

General Discussion / Re: Bad Depth perception?!

To me, it looks like what happens when you set the FOV too high. you get the fishbowl thing, the objects closer to the edge of the screen are stretched. Optimize the FOV and you can pilot normally

Captain Atruejedi doing nothing at the beginning of the match
"Sorry, i was pouring a shot."

Later, in the same match
"Thar, remind me in the lobby to bring captains tools. Remember, i'm afternoon drunk."

Gameplay / Re: Ammo type damage chart

Your heat sink total is off by a factor of 2.  The correct math is 249.
You are correct, i miscalculated there. Only, through some unknown reason, i can't modify my posts so i can't change it.

Gameplay / Re: Light Flak Discussion
« on: January 30, 2014, 09:49:17 am »
The problem is not that it is just weak, it was over-nerfed back in the days when everyone used to use gat-flak on their pyra. The devs took away a huge part of the damage, so that 1 full clip can't kill a ship, which it could do with ease before. I agree, it is weaker on long range than the Art or Banshee and on shorter range than the mortar, so some de-nerfs or buffs would be nice

Here's the chart for a hypothetical Flak cannon with 2 shots, each dealing 100 damage. Here, the changes in rate of fire are so minimal that they are left out on purpose

Standard rounds
2 x 100 = 200

Lochnagar shot
1 x 225 = 225

Heavy clip
2 x 100 = 200

Incendiary rounds
2 x 100 = 200

Burst
2 x 100 = 200

Greased rounds
2 x 80 = 160

Lesmok rounds
1 x 100 = 100

Heatsink clip
3 x 83 = 498

Charged rounds
2 x 130 = 260

you are right, i will edit that in, as right now the Lochnagar rounds for example seem to be very bad.

Well, this isn't about the guns, but the ammo types :D but i might convert it into dps as well.

Gameplay / Ammo type damage chart
« on: January 29, 2014, 03:21:51 pm »
Here, i will compare the different ammo types by damage, rate of fire and clip size differences. Might add other thing to the chart later.
For this, we use the ammo on a hypothetical chaingun with 100 bullets in the clip, each doing 10 damage. The whole clip is emptied in 10 seconds. We also take for granted that every bullet hits because we all are good gunners, right?

Standard rounds
100 x 10 = 1000 in 10s

Lochnagar shot
1 x 22.5 = 22.5 instant

Heavy clip
75 x 10 = 750 in 10s

Incendiary rounds
75 x 10 = 750 in 13s

Burst
120 x 10 = 1200 in 11.5s

Greased rounds
120 x 8 = 960 in 4s

Lesmok rounds
70 x 10 = 700 in 10s

Heatsink clip
130 x 8.3 = 1079 in 10s

Charged rounds
80 x 13 = 1040 in 12.5s

The Lounge / Re: What did you name your ship and why?
« on: January 28, 2014, 07:36:51 pm »
Pyra: Dashing Rainbow
Simply put: i'm a ponidude and like to dash into enemy ships with my pyra. (Sometimes even into allied ships :D)
Goldfish: Ye olde Phoenix
for me, the Goldfish will always be the phoenix, mostly because it looks like a Firenation ship. The ye olde part is just because it's funnier
Mobula: Loaf of bread
Pretty self explanatory. I mean look at it!
Spire: Falling Dagger
I really loved TESII: Daggerfall and the Spire kinda looks like a dagger...
Galleon: Panzerfaust
German Anti-tank weapon from WWII, literally meaning armourfist. I called it that because the armoured Galleon really packs a punch
Squid: Jak's Hellcat
Named after Jak's vehicle in Jak and Daxter: the lost frontier. I really loved that game back in the days. Also, the name is cool
Junker: Scavanger
At first it was called "10% rat-free", but now i can't use % in the name anymore, so i had to improvise.
