Q&A / Re: Learning to Pilot
« on: July 22, 2015, 09:23:25 pm »
Gunners aren't necessary, and in most cases a buff engi outperforms a gunner. Buff engineers can repair better, buff components, and deal more damage than gunners. Gun buffs can be kept up perpetually by buffing during reload and provide +20% damage increase. Buffed regular ammo is higher damage per second than greased. Most guns don't benefit from gunners and having an extra buff is a huge advantage to your ship.

I and many others prefer 2 engis and one gunner on most ships as the ammo variety and gunner stamina can help. It comes down to a matter of preference and playstyle. On Crazy King maps though, then 3 engis may very well outperform a gunner because you'll probably spend 90% of the match burning pilot tools

I've never heard about this standard pilot loadout, I prefer Kero-Claw-Impact Bumpers. Use what you want. Except Range finder. Fuck the Range finder. Nobody should ever use range finder.

Here are two tips from me:

One: Look at the Map. See those gridlines? each square is 1KM^2, use it to estimate distance. Also, use the map.

Two: A lot of people seem to forget this for some reason but this isn't the Ocean, we have 3 Dimensions of Travel. Ascend and Descend. Use Height to your advantage. I see too many matches where everyone skirts the top the whole game.

All-Flare-Mobula is a prime example of asymmetric warfare: If your PC crashes, we win.

Also once upon a time there has been a 3v3 all flare pyramidion game, on Dunes. Offered by 404 with my commentary, it lasted about an hour. Even today, if I gently whisper to my computer the word "flare", it shutters and try to switch off.

Ah, as one person said when we took a 4 gunner (with 2 crew members drunk and one, myself, pretty much delerious from lack of sleep) 5 flare mobula and managed to get a kill, "so you used the old Lag them out strategy?" It backfired of course, my FPS dropped like a wingless bird.

guess what? you're not even meant to use heavy ships like galleon or junker or spire on crazy king.

barring only vets that know how to race with these behemoths. Most players shouldn't fly slow ships in crazy king in the first place.

Noob galleon on any team=instant gg in crazy king for the opposing team that flies "proper" ships for crazy king.

While I do agree with you mostly, that only people who know what they are doing are likely to win with em on CK (and even then it is iffy, I find the galleon best suited for blockading) I fail to see what that has to do with the topic at hand. It could be 6 squids on refinery and the issue would remain but it is worse on KOTH than it is on CK.

Also, I still wish you wouldn't be so quick to disparage new players... I've found many that are pretty damn good at the game, having picked it up quick, had good ideas, had good teachers, or just being good at teamwork. They'll surprise ya you know. That attitude of "should and shouldn't" gets kind of tiring. if somebody wants to try something, I say let em try it. if it works, great. If it doesn't, well, the fool is not he who tried, but he who failed to learn from the attempt.

I agree with a lot of what you said, especially the long cap time vs small win conditions and the spawn advantage. I've seen pleany of times where spawn advantage gave one team nearly 200 free points. the small win is especially noticable in CP. in desert scrap for example, combine travel time, the fact that you have to clear the enemies to take it, the uncap time, and then the cap time, and almost always, the first team to take the point will win. beyond that though, even if you DO take it back, the other team will be very close to victory. Enough that, often, one kill will get them the points they need.

If I may ask, what are he lower two? I recognize the GoI emblem and the Elder Scrolls Logo.

Very nice, I wish I had that level of craftsmanship

I donno, there are a lot of rebuild achieves yet if the crew has good engineers, you might never rebuild ANYTHING. Gunnery ones are tough because good engineers have such specific gunning times.

case in point, despite it being either number 1 or 2 in its branch, I'm not even 3/4 done with the rebuild 20 engines with spanner, why? because if we are doing our job, we don't let them break.

I do agree that most max it out first, after all, like you said, most crews are Pilot,gunner/engi,engi,engi. However from a pure ease of leveling standpoint (so level progress in relation to time spent in that class) I still think pilot has it easier in the long run.

I don't say this to be demeaning or somehow lessen the expirience, but you should have seen it in the old days. If you were max level and only had 1000 matches, there was some achievement farming going on. These days, I see multiple max level engis with only 300 matches. It's absurd. Any class is too easy to level right now and it doesn't need to be easier

I was around before the leveling redo. Though I played a lot less (I have almost exactly 500 matches atm) I do remember. it took quite a long time to leave novice.

I'll be honest, while I agree there is a level inflation issue at novice levels, I do think that the difficulty of leveling scales remarkably for non-pilot classes. The achievements are simply harder to do. As a pilot, at least half of the achieves technically have 4 people working on them, and another chunk such as use any given tool can be EASILY ground during downtime on a point or between kills if you have a half-decent engineer to keep up with the DPS to your parts.

Pilot is truly the easiest class to level IMO, and yet it is the hardest class to play as a good pilot needs to manage his crew well, something I still have trouble with from time to time. Meanwhile I'm finding engineer achieves incredibly hard to get because they require such specific actions. (You try asking a captain to let his baloon break so you can rebuild it or explain why you arent fixing the goldfish hull cause you need 19 more rebuilds on it) Yeah, no captain is gonna like that. How about those combat ones? Gunnery achieves arent quite as bad.

As for XP for kills, that wont work. I cannot tell you how many times I've had my ship all but finish an enemy only to have an ally gat that last sliver of health and get the kill credit. In regards to levels, you have to realize that people like the numbers, it makes them feel accomplished. by the time they get to high levels they are more likely to stick around but those first few levels are key to making people feel accomplished.

finally, if this rinntaq guy is as good as you say he is max, I need to borrow him. I've had the get 5 and get 20 kills at 1kM achives sitting undone for a while now, both still at 0. HOw you get a kill at that range is truly beyond me.

Only two days prior to joining GoI, My Fire emblem Radiant Dawn disk was found to be too damaged to use. In honor of it (knowing it would be a long time until I could afford a replacement) I decided to forgo my usual name of Irbricksceo and took the name of Ashunera, The goddess. Also, here is a quote from her that is rather fitting IMO for the wold in which GoI takes place

“The miasma of war is beginning to shroud the world. However, I shall not again be frightened. As one born of the hopes of man I shall protect this world.”
