The Docks / Re: [OVW] Overwatch
« on: October 19, 2015, 01:45:59 pm »
This should probably go somewhere more notable (I'll inquire about having the opening post modified) but our leadership structure has changed (ha, you thought it was complicated already?).

In order to protect against SCDS (Sudden Clan Death Syndrome, which OVW has seen happen to several other clans and taken in some people left from them).. we have changed structure so that the clan is not directly tied to GOIO. While Alistair, Puppy Fur and myself remain the Overwatch Officers and take care of the clan as a whole, Ightrril and VomAct have been promoted to Field Officers for GOIO (and are already doing a sterling job).

This means they are responsible for the GOIO-side of Overwatch, organising events and members, accepting new people and such. You can still speak to any of the Officers if you need to, of course, but Igh and Vom will have "first line" knowledge of anything GOIO related!

General Discussion / Re: What do you name your ships and why?
« on: April 09, 2015, 05:52:47 pm »
Anubis (Pyramidion): Namesake of my first cat, who I lost to antifreeze poisoning
Diego (Junker): Namesake of the brother cat of the brother/sister pair, who I also lost to antifreeze poisoning
Fin-esse (Goldfish): Goldfish have fins + finesse
Lexx (Squid): Named after the titular ship from the Lexx series.
Doubloch (Galleon): Nothing special, shortened version of "Double Lochnagar" which is the ammo for the carronades I took when I first flew it.
i- (Spire): "i-" kinda looks like a Spire.
Flytato (Mobula): It looks like a flying potato.

Such creativity.

UTC/GMT does not change with Summertime, so it;s a good thing to reference. The day the world stop messing with timezones is the day everyone understands timezones. x_x
Don't reference GMT. GMT "changes" to BST. Just reference UTC, it isn't a "local" time zone at all.

This isn't entirely useful. For example, say an organiser says "The event will happen at 21:00 EST". Everyone then uses the above tool to convert EST to their local timezone.. and it still ends up being wrong.

Why?

1) They meant EST, but the program presumed EDT because DST is in effect (but not all EST locations observe EDT).
2) They actually meant EDT.
3) They meant EST.. Australia.

Far less mistakes happen when it goes:
Organiser: Known Local -> Common, Participant: Known Common -> Local
than when it goes:
Participant: Vague Local -> Local

And when organisers put both the local time and the UTC time, it is easy to check if they got it wrong.

..and now Muse have been bitten by this with PAX. They put the local time and the UTC offset. The wrong UTC offset.

I am signed up to start helping at 13:00 (UTC-8) + 8 = 21:00 UTC + 1 = 22:00 BST.
When I am actually supposed to turn up is at 13:00 (UTC-7) + 7 = 20:00 UTC + 1 = 21:00 BST.

When will people start listening to me?

The Docks / Re: I like guns. [Clans that aren't solely competitive?]
« on: December 31, 2013, 08:32:15 am »
Overwatch isn't competitive focused (despite our ranking system implying otherwise...), we're just a bunch of people who enjoy playing together. You're more than welcome to hop onto our ships and see if you like us :)

We're also allied with Cake and you really can't go wrong with Cake.

Gameplay / Re: Artemis
« on: December 22, 2013, 07:55:09 pm »
That is something im always concerned about. Fjords is my favourite map because of the fact that it has a really high hight ceiling.

Then you have the map Dunes with a questionable Ceiling...
I don't profess to being a pilot of note, let alone a great pilot but this is exactly my experience when we faced this build flown by a captain that knew the guns arcs. They sat at the map height, completely negating the limited upward arcs. We got rushed, negating our lumberjack goldfish and taking out the balloon of one junker just meant getting shot to pieces by the other.

Ace's suggestion of reversing the arcs sounds good to me. As it stands, sitting at the map ceiling with triple artemis is very low risk. Lose your balloon? No problem, you have the maximum possible time to get it back up (especially when your other triple art junker just disabled/killed them as you descended). Having to hover close to the terrain to stop people flying under you means that if you lose your balloon, you're going to start taking hull damage, making a multitude of balloon popping builds viable.

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: No gun side shield option

It would be interesting if the weapon slots could be used as mount slots for other things, though that would introduce a whole new dimension for balancing.

Even if it was possible to just not mount a gun and get the natural speed/manuvering boost of having a lighter ship would be good!

I approve of where this idea could go :)

At the very least, it would be nice to be able to see where the dust clouds are. A couple of times during CP, I've spawned inside it so by the time I got out of it, all my weapons were down.

EDIT: I mean, while selecting a spawn point.

They're not implementing it for Adventure Mode?
I.. don't know. I would imagine if they did, it would be similar to the target balloons in Sandbox.

Escort missions in single player games where you escort someone that is following you is universally hated. While the VIP mode on counter strike back in the day was actually quite fun.
Yeah, it's the AI that makes escort so frustrating. As long as the escorted ship is piloted by a human (so you can instruct them to hold position, watch out for mines etc.) it would probably be fine.
