Tentative Date and Time:

11 am EDT Sunday, September 21.

The tournament will consist of 4 two ship teams.  As of now, first come first serve as we will have to have exactly 4 two ship teams to make this format work properly.  Please sign up in this thread if you wish to commit your team to this tournament.

Thanks

What would be an ideal time for most of EU.  I could try and do the calculations, but probably be best to hear it from the EU players.  I really would like this tourney to be as inviting to as many folks as possible.  I wouldn't mind trying to run it earlier on Sunday, even before noon EDT.  But that, of course, wouldn't be completely up to me.

Making another call to any individuals who would like to help me out with this.  At this time we are focusing in on the first Sunday in October for the debut of the Tourney.  I would be especially appreciative of anyone with previous experience putting on tournaments to help me with hammering out rules and whatnot even if they don't want their name on it, or even don't wish to be involved with actual running of the tourney on game day.

I would also like some feedback on whether the people who are actually gonna try and play this type of tourney would like a weekly type format, or a league type format that would run for a set number of weeks.  I'm leaning heavily toward the weekly all in one type tourney with a weekly rollover champion team.

GOG is very much worth supporting over EA, even over Steam at this point.

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Seperating Drums from Music.

If you take out the drums, take out all those unnecessary clouds in Canyon and Paritan.

I don't listen to the music. I listen to jazz.  My crew knows this and will always tell me when they hear it.  I love the drums.  It's like close range non directional radar.  I just assume the pilots and crews in this particular time and place have developed this new spidey-sense for survival.

Imagine, you can't have it both ways. You can't say that Muse has nothing to do with MLG and diverts no resources toward it while also stating that one of the devs is diverting time, any amount, to MLG.  To say that Muse had nothing to do with getting into MLG is blatantly and patently false:

Congratulations Everyone!
You are now working on an official MLG game.

After working over the weekend with Dan from the Rob and Dan show.

Hats off for Howard putting me on the trail with the link from Gabe Connor on facebook.
We spent the weekend pushing and we got it. We gathered the community and dominated the MLG forum and got enough pressure to get noticed by the organizers.  After trying out the game and seeing how passionate our players were they said they would start with working on the ladder for it.

We're just starting out so I'll keep everyone updated on what comes next.

Muse Games

So this is your definition of having NOTHING to do with it?  And since when has Muse's standard for involvement in their game been whether on not it's obligatory?  Muse go above and beyond in just about every aspect of this game, why would they treat MLG like stinky red-headed step child with leprosy?

And commenting on the validity of your statements about Muse's involvement with MLG is hardly insulting Keyvias.  He is free to do with his time as he sees fit, and is probably the better judge of what to do with that time than you or I or anyone else.  You claimed it had no effect.  That's simply bullshit.  40 - 5 cannot = 40.  I'm not even arguing about whether or not this game should be involved with MLG or whether or not Muse should be working with MLG or not.  What I'm saying is you're not dealing with reality if you think that GoIO being in MLG has no effect on Muse.  It's an impossibility.  If only because they actually give a crap about their game and the people who play it.

No, they are in no way obliged to devote any time or energy toward MLG.  But neither are they obliged to post on this forum, play the game with their customers, provide prize support for tournaments, and the list goes on and on; however, they do these things.

For the record, I have no idea what impact MLG will have on this game.  I hope it's good.  But to believe it has no impact, especially on developers, especially Muse developers, is insulting to the level of Muse's involvement they have constantly had to this game.  Look at their involvement in community run, rather small tournaments.  You truly think their level of involvement in MLG will disappear?  Come on, man.

Your engineer and gunner analogy is inaccurate.  If you use the wrong ammo or engineer tool at the wrong time, it can be fatal.  Ever had someone hit a Squid hull with a Mallet in the middle of a battle?  A hell of a lot more punishing than leaving PC on for an entire match.  Having lesmok loaded when you should have greased can mean a loss of DPS that can cause you to lose an engagement.  PC overuse has never meant the difference between life and death.

Try again.

I would further contend that if you SHOULD be constantly using pilot tools, then there really is no truly proper use.  You can't constantly use Hydro or Chute vent, Drogue Chute, or Moonshine or Impact bumpers without severe penalties that should lead to your demise.  Kerosene and Phoenix Claw can be used constantly.  Kerosene has a direct competitor in Moonshine.  Phoenix Claw has no direct competitor and can be constantly used.

Hitting 2 at the same time you hit A or D takes no skill.  Knowing when to reverse engines to speed up your turn does.  Knowing good angles and bad angles does.

This is the same umbrella as dominant meta builds.  If some element of a game becomes ubiquitous, the game starts to become stale, certain builds and ships and guns and ammo become dominant and seen over and over again. Phoenix Claw is the most dominant element of this game.  NO pilot worth a damn would be caught dead without it.  It's not even a question.  It's the only item I never change in any loadout -- gunner, engi, or pilot.

Any other slot, you have to ask and answer questions to determine what should be there.  I've never not run PC as a pilot.  Like ever.  Even when I was running with a Spyglass, I still ran with PC.  It's a no-brainer to take it, it's a no-brainer when to use it (if you're turning).

Where exactly is the skill in using PC?  Feels to me it's more a crutch for those that have less skill.  Oh, that junker is in my blind spot, guess I'll just PC.

Imagine, are you delusional?  You don't think there will be added pressure when there is an MLG event and a patch like this last one comes out?  Sure, Muse could decide to whistle through the graveyard and pretend MLG isn't there, but that's simply not realistic.  MLG is a real opportunity for serious expansion of the player-base.  It only ratchets up the pressure Muse is already under trying to hear all the suggestions and complaints and address them.  Do you read all the "suggestions" to improve competitive play?

Either this is an opportunity for GoIO and Muse or it isn't.  If it isn't, why did anyone try for it to begin with?  If it is, then there is pressure to make the most of that opportunity.  And to say MLG and Muse have nothing to do with each other, other than Keyvias fleshing out some rules (any tournament runners out there want to talk about how that's not a big deal and takes almost no time?), again, is unrealistic.

What if MLG or their fans or whatever overwhelmingly "suggest" the game is too slow, hard to follow, boring, whatever?  I guess Muse just ignores that.  Has jack squat to do with that?  We both know that is not the way Muse operates.

Oh, and don't forget about Adventure Mode.  Only so many man-hours in a week.  Only so many balls you can keep in the air.  If Keyvias just takes 5 hours total to address MLG rules, that's 5 hours he could have been putting into the game itself.  And as a percentage of man-hours, I'm betting it's a pretty high number.

I'm certain Muse has priorities.  I'm certain they evaluate these priorities.  I'm certain they listen to the community to inform those evaluations.  Maybe they listen to us a little too much sometimes.

Community Events / Re: The TimmyB Tournament- starting August 23rd!

I think you should call it something other than a Tournament then, so that it is obvious and upfront that this is not to be seen in the same light at other competitive tournaments.

I think it is great that someone wanted to break away from standard competitive fare and open up a more festive get together that truly builds community.  And to further this wish and somewhat higher minded goal, I think it should advertise itself as something other than a tournament so it isn't sullied by it.

A festival, a Fete, a party, a mixer, GOIO's version of the Laff-a-lympics or some other name that will set it apart and above regular Tournaments.  Just a thought.

Why do you have to use drastic amounts of piloting tools in order to pilot effectively?  As it stands now, Pilots should get one less item to loadout, get the PC buff and engines should slowly take damage.  What's the point of having base turning stats if every pilot worth a damn is gonna be using PC when they need to turn?  PC should be able to be bound to the same keys as turning left and right as it stands now.

Furthermore, the Squid is the boat that gets hit the hardest by the ubiquity of PC.  Other ships are gonna turn better, so you don't have the edge you're supposed to.  And the Squid is by far the hardest ship to maintain engines on.  IMHO, if you simply take PC out of the game, the Squid would instantly become a better more competitive ship.

Now does it seem right to anyone that a ship gets an indirect nerf simply because PC has to be taken to be a decent pilot?

For every upside, there has to be a downside.  Tar had this problem, that Sammy knew better than most and exploited it for quite some time.  PC has no downside, none, and it really can't be argued otherwise.

It skews ship balance.  And if everyone is always using it, why does it need to be there at all?  Just give every ship a buff in turning and get rid of it.

Make PC have a activate, then a cooldown.  Let's say it works for like 3 seconds, then goes on a 15 second cooldown.

Honestly, I think all pilot tools should have a cooldown just like repairing stuff.

You get the effect, which lasts a certain amount of time, does a certain amount of damage, then goes on cooldown, and no other pilot tools can be used until that cooldown expires.

This way, ships would actually have the stats they were given for most of a match rather than having some sort of buff on most of the time.  It would also  make buffs much more effective and increased the need for more crew cooperation and communication.

Of course, engines wouldn't suffer near as much and the main engi on a pyri could get really bored, or just a lot less dizzy.

That is all.

General Discussion / Music in Lobby

I believe it is against terms of use of this game to "spam" music through your mic.  Now, I know it seems a bit hypocritical for me, renown player of Jazz would bring this up, but deal with it.  I don't believe I spam, and if I do, I will alter what I do, I do not think I spam.

Anyway.  There is a certain clan whose stated purpose is to spread music throughout Guns of Icarus.  I have almost all of them blocked.  Does anyone else find it weird that a clan has a stated goal that is in contradiction to the terms of use agreement?
