Could I get a link for the new recruitment thread for The Bully Boys? It's the Version 3.0 one! Also, the old (BFS and Haven) thread can probably be deleted now.

The Docks / The Bully Boys Recruitment Thread (Version 3.0)
« on: November 22, 2014, 10:49:01 am »
Bully for you, sir!

Who We Are

The Bully Boys are one of oldest and largest Guns of Icarus Online clans. Starting all the way back in March 2013, we competed in the very first Cogs tournament with our competitive team Black Flight Squadron. We made a splash in the competitive scene, winning the Icarus Sky Tournament. We've also won titles and ranked highly in various other events since. As well as competing ourselves, we’ve also organized awesome community events such as the Aerodrome. Though we don’t enter every competitive event anymore, we always make an impact when we do!

Since our founding we’ve grown into a diverse multi-game community. We play a wide variety of games together, ranging from shooters to MOBAs to classic pen-and-paper RPGs, and are always willing to try out something new. We’ve also started really getting into making videos on Youtube and streaming games on Twitch. Whether you just want to hang out and game or you want to try dipping your toe into creating online content, we’ve got something for you!

If you are a friendly and fun-loving lad (or lass!) who’s looking for other friendly and fun-loving lads and lasses to play games with, or just generally have a good time around, then you should consider applying for the Bully Boys.

Why Should I Join?

We have a Mumble server for our voice chat solution, where we do the majority of talking and socializing. Thus it is important that you are able to use the software, but if you should have trouble with it, one of our friendly techsavvy members will be happy to help you sort it out. As we are a primarily European group, you will find us to be most active during European evening times. However, feel free to apply even if you don’t fall within that time zone!

Being part of the Bully Boys assures you’ll always have people to play that hot new multiplayer game with, and you’ll have the opportunity to make life-long friends! We feel what sets us apart from other gaming communities is our focus on integrating people into a close-knit group, regardless of their skill level, as well as giving them an opportunity to express themselves and bring their ideas to life.

How Do I Join?

Sounds interesting? Head over to our website at http://bullyboys.enjin.com for more info, or if you’d like to apply right away, head to http://bullyboys.enjin.com/recruitment to sign up!

Also, if you're interested to see the kind of stuff we do, check out our Youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/BullyBoysGaming

There are two ways we can look at this. The first way we can look at is that it's an attempt to express a (rather spiteful) opinion by drawing false equivalency, saying that a group where women who have been trolled and harrassed (as B'Elanna has) can have a safe space to game is somehow equivalent to creating a stereotypically mysognist, homophobic male-only group. The second way we can look at it is that it's simply an unfunny joke that has missed the mark.

Given what I know about Mezhu and his history of trolling I'm inclined to think it's the former. As is often the case, though Gilder has not expressed his opinion diplomatically, his heart is in the right place. I agree with Velvet that there should not be blatant personal attacks in the forums, but I am also concerned about toxicity in the community that can be spread in far more subtle and powerful ways by trolling. If I'm wrong and this thread is all just good fun then I welcome Mezhu to come forward and explain that this is the case.

I would so buy it if Muse made a figurehead like this (would make it difficult to concentrate on flying my pyra though).

I feel it's time for an update for The Bully Boys.

Clan Name:
The Bully Boys
Founders: Brick Hardcastle and Gilder Unfettered
Members: 80+
Clan Tag: TBB
Wesbite: http://www.bullyboys.enjin.com/home
Steamgroup: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/TheBullyBoys
Location: We are a Mainly European Clan, though we have members from all parts of the world.
Info: Our competitive team Black Flight Squadron are the Sky Tournament Champions, and have also won other smaller events and titles, so we have a rich history in GOIO competitive play. However, we have grown into a multi-gaming clan since our founding and we play a variety of games together, including tabletop roleplay over RollD20. We frown on abusive behaviour but encourage having a laugh. We are a close-knit group, like a family, and above all we're looking for cool people to play games and have fun with.
Requirements: Applicants must have mumble installed, have a friendly attitude and must sign-up via the website.

I'll get round to making a new recruitment thread too at some point XD

For the most part, this league was exactly what I wanted. The basic structure is simple, straightforward and fair. The only issue I had was that there was a point during our match with Overwatch where it wasn't clear whether a pause had been called or not, and I was wasting precious seconds typing to the organizers for a verdict when there was action going on. I'm not sure how to solve this issue, other than refs joining a party/mumble/teamspeak with the teams to vocally inform them of a pause so they won't miss it in the corner of the screen or Muse creating that long-awaited "competitive mode" where the game auto-pauses for dcs and such.

I think, all in all, 11 weeks is a bit too long. It is very difficult to know with complete certainty whether a team member will be able to show up every saturday for nearly three months, especially if you also want them to be there for most scrims/practices so the team can practice together and stay in good form. When core members get stolen away by unexpected real life problems/obligations it really makes things a lot more stressful for those organizing everything. Somewhere between 5 to 8 weeks is the sweet spot for GOIO leagues, I think. Long enough to give things a sense of grandeur and provide for a good variety of match-ups, but not so long teams are getting too stretched thin or fatigued towards the end. If this means that teams might have to play more than one match some weeks, I think that would still be preferable. Can't speak for everyone, but I'd rather have my core team together for multiple matches in a night and focus on winning than have to worry about where they are going to be in two month's time.

As for time limit, I would say a penalty for a 0-0 match would be acceptable just to keep it interesting for spectators. I think if people want to time out on a 1-1 that would at least mean two ships die during the match.

I agree. I think counting a 0-0 as a loss for both sides would probably provide a good incentive for the teams to actually start fighting.

Not only would this be pointless, given that both teams taking a loss or both teams taking a tie would have the same effect on their ranking either way, it would also be fundamentally altering competitive play on extremely weak grounding. It is based on the flawed assumption that a result that has happened exactly once in over a year and a half of GOIO competitive play will not only happen again but become a problem. Both teams in the 0-0 game wanted to win but it was simply taking too long for either team to get a good position on the other. If we had to play eachother again, we'd probably realize taking the same builds on the same map would likely result in a stalemate situation and we would either take something else or come up with another strategy beforehand.

There are plenty of ways to improve competitive play, but needlessly browbeating teams who are giving their time and energy to participate in this marathon league is not one of them.

I used to cast several matches like this every weekend when sniping was at the peak of its popularity, including a SIRS vs Gents bo3 that went nearly three hours. Sometimes it got kinda boring, but I never once blamed any of the teams for using the builds and styles that they thought were best. I wouldn't expect them to do anything else. Actually, it was often an opportunity for some fun banter with my co-casters during the lulls in the action.

It seems bizarre to kick up a fuss over one rather anomalous sniping match in a league with hard 30 minute time limits that's otherwise chock full of brawling. I agree there should be more CP in competitive for the sake of variety, and that's a big reason why I wanted to be involved in the organizing the Aerodrome (and it should be noted that Gilder put a huge amount of time and effort into organizing it).

I don't think either us or the SIRs went into the match intending to make it a 0-0 draw. That's just how it turned out. In the end, for a variety of reasons, neither of us could get the engage we wanted. It happens sometimes. GOIO is a wonderfully unique beast where a wide variety of styles can be used and experimented with and that is what I love about it, even if it means there are long, drawn out matches now and again.

When the mods get round to it, could someone remove the (BFS and Haven) part from "The Bully Boys" entry? Also, could someone replace the text in the "scrimmage times" area with "We should be available for scrims on weekday evenings (European time). Please contact one of us to arrange a scrim in advance as it might be difficult for us to get people together for scrims on short notice.". Also, please replace Strite in the contact info section with "IGN: Halogamb, steam name: halogamb".

in-game titles would be awesome.

btw the Hatters beat BFS on Duel yesterday to retake that title for the Gents (having agreed that our scrims count for titles), but I forgot to take a screenshot.

I can confirm this is true. However, BFS won it back the following week and we currently hold the Duel at Dawn title.

I think my game was being a bit screwy and I didn't get the score screen, but you can see the Hatter team giving the ggs.

The Bully Boys are worthy of consideration. Our competitive team, Black Flight Squadron, enters most big events. We have a very active community and frequently play GOIO and many other games together. However, we have more European than US members and we tend to schedule around that.

As competitive-focused US-based clans go, Ducks and Merry Men are a good bet.

We are indeed The Bully Boys.

After consulting with them, my clan-mates have graciously re-affirmed me as leader.

However, we are going to use this opportunity to change our clan-tags from BFS to TBB. Initially we used BFS as that was what everyone knew us as. Then we used it to distinguish the BFS part of the coalition from the Haven part. Now that Haven is no longer part of the Bully Boys, and we are looking to make multiple teams, we would like the tag TBB to be reserved for us.

Yeah, I was kinda under the impression that titles could change hands in scrims as Ducks and OVW seem to swap them about during their weekly scrims. I hope I haven't been too presumptuous. Hatters and Gents could very well win it back off us next week anyway.
