Hello, I saw some discution about travel between cities and had some thoughts. I get that open world travelling is impossible with the level of graphics and details the skirmish battles have. On the other hand, with instanced travel as the only form available, I don't see a solo trader working on a known route cause it will always be camped.
Why not try to implement a mixed system, like final fantasy's? Pirates of the burning seas has done it. Imagine if you could fly around the world in a top view of the map with a smaller less detailed representation of your ship. When you face an npc or a player on the map and are unable to outrun or hide from him you go to skirmish mode's instanced map generated based on the specific terrain/location you were on the map.
The routes would still exist. The same distance in an instanced route would take half the time that on the map's open travel ( more or less depending on balancing). If you feel safe (when in a strong group or escorted) you take the instanced route and complete missions faster. If you want to avoid encounters or be able to pick your fights with the easier targets you take your time in the map travel.
You could have skills or equipments to enhance stealth on the map or to improve you chance and distance on which you spot other ships. That way a pirate might camp a hiden spot on the map from where he can see the ships going through a determined route and chose his target for an ambush (choosing if,where and when he enters the instanced route). That would make the task of hunting pirates, escorting convoys and trading that much interesting.
