I saw this thread and thought it was an ad for a big band jazz concert. I was sorely disappointed.

  • First place team will receive: $200 total for the team (to be split by team leader's discretion,) title: Biggest Brass Bruiser, badge, and name an in-game AI.

Oh my god, I'm tempted. That's awesome.

This sounds great. I hope many teams sign up and I look forward to hearing more details. Better advertise the shit out of this, Muse!

If you're going to stream at 2000kbps+ please be partnered, as some people have lame internet and have difficulty watching high-bitrate streams.

Don't half-ass the stream production. Just compare the quality of my stream (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4TFIH4d3NY) to the quality of the other streams (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDPm1CUCwq0) from last year's tournament. I'm an amateur like everyone else—if I can do it, you can do it.

Common quality mistakes:

Low bitrate (bitrate should be between 1800-3000)
Low resolution (720p minimum)
Wrong aspect ratio (aspect ratio should be 16:9 as to not cause black bars)
Poor audio balancing (https://www.twitch.tv/thatlysanyaguy/v/98071628?t=01h17m0s) (one caster louder than other, game sound too loud/quiet)
Casters with bad microphones
Not showing team names in-game
Using the included "cinematic filters" (they look like garbage in compressed video)

You should also spend some time making decent looking graphics, and not just paste the game capture over a background. This includes:

A lobby scene that shows the players as they join, team logos, caster names, and for extra points—the game count and upcoming map
A scene with the current bracket
Break scene if you don't want to fill time in-between sets
Pre-tournament scene with countdown timer

SO to quell the reports coming in, and to come back out of the shadows myself, the video Urz is calling out is mine. That was TheObviousShow its well... infant stages lets say. I had been asked maybe 1 hours before the event to stream, had serious connection issues, and was very new to  OBS. He makes very good points as to where my stream saw MAJOR quality flaws. While it might not seem like the nicest thing to do, I personally do not care that he has pointed it out and am glad he is. It was reviewing my own work that lead me to improve my channels casting quality and become one of GOIOs more prominent streamers for a time.

For those who are familiar with my casting, I believe you can see that my own channel improved from its humble beginnings and I learned a lot along the way. I am also happy to say I am coming out of retirement (if I can call it that) to cast this event! I bring to the table new skills in video editing, recording, and video quality as well as hardware upgrades to best improve overall quality.

TO ADDRESS ALL THE REPORTS: Stop reporting the post. I don't care he called out my channel, yea asking first before shamming the video with my logo in it would have been nice, but he makes a point to increase quality for an event like this. Not the nicest way to say it, but I don't care so stop worrying+reporting about it. In the future, try not to call out other channels. There is a great need for streamers and people have to start somewhere. Offer help, not public shame

I feel that my post was pretty even-handed, and full of thorough and useful advice. The videos links were included only to illustrate my points on stream quality, and I only chose Admiral Obvious's video because we both streamed that event, and it was the previous event by these organizers. My intention was not to shame him specifically, but to speak on the overall landscape of stream quality in competitive Guns of Icarus (which is poor). I included the link to Lysanya's stream because it was the most recent and obvious example of bad audio balance. This was followed by a list of easily implemented improvements.

Anyone who interprets my post as an "attack" should quite frankly go grow some thicker skin.

Is it an error that Lysanya is co-casting and his own streamer?
  • Admiral Obvious with Lysanya co-casting at twitch.tv/theobviousshow (https://www.twitch.tv/theobviousshow).
  • Lysanya with guest co-casting at twitch.tv/thatlysanyaguy (https://www.twitch.tv/thatlysanyaguy).

No. It is not an error. Admiral Obvious and Lysanya are casting on different days, and as such I've listed both as a master list.

I have production feedback for the main stream.

Don't be afraid to cut to break if there's an unplanned delay. It gives the commentators some time to rest their voice, get water, use the bathroom (etc), and cues viewers to go check out the other stream while they're waiting.

There's no benefit to anyone having you guys ramble about nothing for 30 minutes like what happened on Saturday.

If permitted by the streamer's hardware/connection, they should be targeting a higher bitrate.

If the Gunsoficarus channel does not have quality options, you should target as high as 2500kbps. If it does have quality options, you can safely target 3000+.

The in-game team names graphic is poorly shaped. It takes up a lot of space while not allowing very many characters for team names.

By making it shorter vertically and longer horizontally, you could fit longer team names while blocking less of the action.

(You would also block less of the action by removing the trapezoid graphic behind the team names, which is kind of ugly to begin with.)

Keyvias's microphone would occasionally echo (example (https://www.twitch.tv/gunsoficarus/v/105039158?t=27m18s)). This happened sporadically throughout most of the stream.

It seemed to happen primarily when Jub Jub would cut in to what Keyvias was saying, so my guess would be sound leakage from Jub Jub's heaphones (activating his microphone while Keyvias is still talking). Possible solutions to investigate (on Jub Jub's side): turning down headphone volume, using different headphones with less sound leakage, turning down mic gain, or moving mic somewhere it doesn't pick up the leakage.

It could also be on Keyvias's end: caused by sound leakage of his mic monitor when he's talking loudly.

Showing chat on-screen during a tournament is amateurish. It clashes with the overlay, emphasizes low viewership, creates editing headaches for VODs, and most importantly takes focus away from the commentators and from the matches. The commentators are supposed to be experts and should be able to carry the weight of conversation without constantly (and stiltedly) engaging prompts from the chat.

(Which is not to say you can never pull a chat question that you think would serve kindling to an interesting conversation, but chat interaction during a tournament stream should be infrequent.)

I have a question regarding the finals: The entire tournament is double elimination, except for the finals which is just a basic bo5. The whole point of double elimination is that teams need to lose twice in order to be out completely, but according to the brackets, the team that makes it to the finals with no losses is out after losing only once in the finals. Is that intentional? Shouldn't there be another set in case the finalists lose once?
Title: Re: The Big Brass Revival Rules and Announcement (First Tournament w/ CASH Prizes)
Post by: Keyvias on December 10, 2016, 10:45:30 pm
This is intentional and was a choice that was debated behind the scenes.
The goal of our double elimination was a couple, make sure the best teams were in the finals, and provide the best opportunity for the best team to win the whole thing.

The best of five we believed should give the opportunity for that best team to show themselves and be more interesting to viewers than 2 possible best of 3s.

I hope I explained the reasoning well, but if not just let me know.

The team winning from the top bracket should at least have some sort of advantage. If having two individual bo3s less interesting than a bo5, the top bracket team should at least have a one-match advantage in the final, such that without any matches played, they would have the 1-0 lead in the final. The way it is right now, the team in the finals from the lower bracket is given an advantage, though the top bracket team is the one who should get an advantage.

The organizers of 'The Big Brass Revival' and Muse Games would like to extend a personal congratulations to the winners: 'Fancy Cloud Dancers' who placed first in the event followed closely in second by 'Chef Xedeon's Potatoes au Gratin' and in third place, 'Clan Clan'.

Big thanks to everyone who has participated, organized, streamed, reffed and supported the event, its been a hard fight but well deserved for all the teams.

Clear skies aviators!
