There is probably a good game design/programmatic reason not to do this but I wanted to share this idea for discussion anyway.
Instead of the standard lobby we are used to with the player's names in boxes I suggest making a mini game instance where all ships are tethered to a sky dock and the players can run around freely. The sky dock would have three areas: Red team's dock, Blue team's dock and the spectator platform. The airships of each team would be tethered to the dock in the configuration the captains had set for them.
To change airships a player would have to walk down the gangplank of their current ship, cross the dock space and walk up the gang plan of a new ship. To change teams the player would have to walk by the spectator platform and on to the other team's dock. Invisible walls would block players from doing things not allowed in the current lobby system. Such as joining a full ship, or team.
This would allow players and captains to flaunt their ships and costumes during the lobby phase. New players could walk the ships and be given instruction prior to match start.

This sounds amazing, send it in :D
While the implementation would take a long time, I think this is a really cool idea and should definitely be shown to Muse.

It could be because I am currently recovering from a cold and lack of sleep, and suffering from illness induced dyslexia, but for a second there I thought you were asking for a Ship Dick lobby.
I would love to see a port town (or rather a flying port megaship).

So no actual matches would be played anymore?

Pretty much, the "game" would devolve into a steam punk fashion show/synchronized strutting contest.

Oh, so my first impression was right.

This would make it a lot easier to keep track of what ships are being used as well instead of having to click in to see the load-outs.
Crew load-outs could be in a pile on the docks (ammo in marked boxes)

Nothing but lumberjacks everywhere

That'd be an interesting lobby system. Novel, to say the least. I find it oddly appealing.
Maybe all the crew can help raise a flag or hoist anchor to signify that their ship is ready.

The place of such an idea is in kickstarter goals after the 'uh... skywhales?' thingie :P
In other words: yeah, it would be cool; no, it won't be done

I don't think this will ever get implemented, seems to me there are too many engineering and ui challenges related to switching loadouts (ships, guns, etc).

Sky whale lobby?

Gun swaps are implemented in practice mode, ships on the other hand probably are too hard.

Actually it is in the kickstarter at $450K.

I am asking that one of the walkable areas be a sky dock and that we use it as a pre game area.
Sort of like a squadron ready room where every one gets to see each other face to face before climbing into their war machines and going off to die.

That is from the adventure mode kickstarter.
Here's how it went: 4,632 backers pledged $198,741 to help bring this project to life.
so throw in the missing 250k and reply to this thread again.
