Title: Airship RPG Archetypes?
Post by: MightyKeb on July 22, 2015, 08:05:33 pm
Someone's made a comparison of my piloting style in accordance with class based RPG archetypes so I started wondering about the comparisons. Here's some food for thought to start off of:

Warriors - Pyramidion, Galleon, Junker

Rogues - Squid, Goldfish

Wizards - Mobula, Spire (Crafek was right, spire IS a wizard.)

Unfortunately I wasnt able to provide more elaborate classification of the ships accordingly to the subclasses of these professions (Paladin, Cleric, Templar etc) because I'm not very well informed on it and it seems to take some digging to, which I wont be able to do now. Feel free to add up on this theory and elaborate on it if you can.

Galleon is definitely the tank.

Pre Pyra nerf:

Galleon = Paladin
Pyra = Warrior
Squid = Rogue
Spire = Mage
Mobula = Lock
Goldfish = Hunter
Junker = Deathknight

RPG's have different arc types depending on what RPG you are playing. Soldiers of antiquity tend to be pretty uniform so I will make comparisons to them:

Squid = Scouts - Good for finding targets and light harassment until the big guns get there.
Goldfish = Skirmishers - Good for disrupting formations before the main clash
Pyra =  Shock Troops - Good for sudden assaults against wavering opponents
Junker = Line Infantry - Good in prolonged battles
Galleon = Heavy Armor/Shield infantry - Good at holding choke points, but poor mobility limits its usefulness in the open field.
Spire = Balista - Excellent damage output, but can not function if attacked.
Mobula = Archers - Similar to the Spire but more independent and a better escape plan.

That's actually a pretty good comparison.

Ooh I've wanted to write out a comparison in terms of tf2 classes!

Squid- Probably FaN Scout. Good mobility for capping points, focus on disabling, only attacks from flank.

Goldfish- Soldier. Very good mobility, versatile in almost any role. Works by disabling people (goldfish disables, soldier blasts people to make their movement predictable)

Pyra- Pyro. Reasonably fast, devastating when catching someone unaware, can control other people's positioning (pyra ram/pyro airblast). Helpless at mid-long range, hard to disable (disabling people in tf2 works by blasting them up with a pill or rocket, which pyro can reflect).

Junker- Heavy. Slow but good maneuverability and close-mid firepower.

Galleon- Demo. Slow and kind of defenseless at close range vs scouts, but very good defense and tons of damage otherwise.

Spire- Sniper. Good damage at most ranges (if you can hit), vulnerable, bad mobility.

Mobula- ??? I don't fly mobulas

Engi?

Slowish, but decent firepower and likes to camp in one spot.

Or medic - Not ideal in a standup fight, but does its best work lurking just behind a more brawler player.

I saw a pre-pyra nerf post and am busy commenting on old things so here

Post-pyra nerf
off of 3.5 because I know nothing else
Galleon = Knight
Squid = Dervish
Goldfish = Scout
Mobula = Gish
Spire = any generic blaster
Junker = Fighter
Pyramidion = semi-well built commoner

Mobula is a very supportive ship, so it'd be good for either Mage, Wizard or Cleric.
although I'd say in some cases a sniping mobula could be a Hunter/Ranger.

Seems to me that you'd make a good necromancer.

Oh, wait
