Yes, I know this have been said many times - but we just came from a game that was nothing but a senseless curb stomp. I feel sick to my stomach, and I really wonder what's gonna be done about all the newbies that get demolished because of team imbalance.

Its not your fault if your enemies fail to work together, and more often than not even newbies can perform excellently, as long as they communicate and co operate.
There is nothing muse can do to make people work together, and match maker already tries its best to avoid these things. Unless people would rather have wait times for as long as a match could take from start to finish. Just because the MMR rating match them with someone already in a match.
The only thing that can be done is by the community, and that's encourage votes for rematch to scramble the teams and play against the people who cooperated well with you the round before.

While I know the matches set up can be one sided, particularly in realm of experience among captains and crew, I feel that its important to have these sort of mixing so that the new folks can learn what does and does not work. I mean, if they only pit vets against vets and newbies against newbies, then you are going to have a significant disparity between skill in the community that would be very difficult to correct otherwise.
I know it can be discouraging for newer captains and crews to get rolled over in a match, but its the aftermath that is important: will the winning team give helpful tips at the end for improving or gloat? Will the newer players rage quit or take note on what happened and adapt, learn, and seek out some advice? It's all dependent on the player(s) themselves and the over all community that we as a whole want to have in the game. :)
I don't know what the nature of your team imbalance was, be it experience, lack of crew, or people quitting in the game, but I'd like to think that the general idea behind what matchmaking does is good at its core as an idea. Maybe they could put in something to allow for a certain number of level matched games for a crew/captain before just flipping to random as it does currently?

Not a plausible option, during off peak times, even during sales, there are nit enough novices online to fill more than a couple of lobbies, lock those players in a match maker that gives them nothing, they leave with a very negative feedback...
It also stops new players from playing with vet friends if they're locked into Novice, all things Muse wants to avoid for good reason.

And just to point out, I used to agree with the idea of locking Novice, but after discussion with the devs where I found out a different side of things I learnt about how important it is that novices are not fully locked in.
Also I will point out, Novice is much more locked in than it used to be, now it resets to novice if you opted out under certain circumstances and its only when MM cant put novices into a novice lobby aFter X time that MM puts them in a non-novice match, and this time period is quite long.

Also I only put guns in arc when they should be there. Otherwise I am too busy trying to get into position to worry about a bit of chip damage we can do before that.

Having spent the slim majority of nearly 6000 matches in the old system, I attest that MM is the best thing that happened to the game since my arrival in Feb 2014. When it first came out it had many serious issues, all of which have been fixed. I am skeptical about how it places people in matches based on MMR, but it's an excellent system that fixed the #1 problem for new players in lobbies: wait time. MM is not perfect and is not designed for handling low player count, but it's what the game needed.
I may be biased because at the same time the best thing ever was added: recommended loadouts. Gone are the days when you have to delay the match forever until trolls bring the loadout or leave. It was extremely frustrating for the whole lobby and it happened alarmingly frequently. Leaving the captain slot and finding another lobby wasn't an answer because a captain slot in a good lobby was gold. It was such a problem that it was better to play with scrubs who ready up before anyone could join. Don't even mention random players joining mid match...another thing MM fixed. For a long period I played AI only ships and had a 43 match winstreak in an AI squid.
Pub stomps were always a thing, and there used to be non swap lobbies which were perpetual stomps. At the beginning of MM the multiple crew form was a big problem, but that is fixed. MM is much more balanced besides the dubious way it sometimes seems to place players in lobbies, and that rematch isn't default. It's efficient and I love it, there's no doubt it was the right step. Don't ban novices from regular matches, they're often a pleasure to play with and people respond well to good communication. 1/3 of my friends list were novice.
PS the custom game menu is awesome. Use it and MM is optional.

The main problem is that 90% of the players who have bought this game drops it before reaching 500 match count. So community is divided 9:1 - 90% are the greenhorns below 500 matches and 10% are vets who managed to get further and usually have 1k+ matches. And therefore vets must play with noobs, which is very annoying for both of the groups. Why people leave before 500 match count is a problem that Muse will have to face someday.
By the way, that's the reason why vets don't play during sales. It ain't worth it, my blocklist is big enough already.
What can be done? Well, better tutorials is surely an idea, but then again there's a ton of videos on youtube and guides on forum, so as many have already said, you can't do much if people are not willing to learn. Or as Ceresbane would put it, git gut or git out.
