Title: The Teaching Tournament! (Ended)
Post by: Keyvias on April 23, 2015, 01:43:50 pm
Coming up the middle of May, we're going to start getting a lot more new players in and we want to make sure they get the best members of our community showing them the ropes. Despite all the work we've done trying to make many parts of the game more newbie friendly, the best way to learn the game is from one of our local experts.

To this end we want pairs to each play a side in a novice game and help teach a gaggle of newbies. It'll be tough work, but it won't be thankless.  We aren't asking for your time free.  The winning team will get any three items from the in-game store and any team that scores over 10 points will receive a gold teacher badge.

Though you will sign up in teams of two, you can do a training game with any other non-novice player.
The event starts on the 15th of May and ends on the 29th of May.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Instructions:

To sign up simply put down the name of yourself and your teaching partner here in the thread. Between the times in question your accounts will be upgraded to do novice matches.

FAQ
Can I join up with one other person from another team and teach a game?
Yes, but both you and their team will get points

Can there be more than one teacher per side?
Yes, but it has to be even on each side and there must be at least 2 novices per ship.

Is this a special badge or the normal gold badge?
Yes, the special Ruby Teaching Medallion

Do we have to be captains?
It is strongly advised, but if you feel like you're able to teach while crewing, we will allow it.

Is there any specific time for this?
Nope, any time you and another person want to make a match for novices between the 15th and 29th of may, you can gain points from it.

Is there any end date to sign ups?
Nope, sign up before, in the middle, or a day before it ends.

I like to play with new players (love the random of each match  :D), and I like to teach them the basics, if they're willing to listen.
I'd like to be a teacher, but I have questions, here we go:

1) lebtr?
2) Is there a specific time in which this event will occour, or it's something teachers can do whenever they're online?
3) I remember something about flamethrowers being forbidden in novice matches, am I remembering correctly or just immagine things?

You mentioned having the teacher in the captain slot, is that a must?
I would be interested but really don't enjoy piloting so if I could step in somewhere else I would consider signing up

We'll need steady high player growth in order to fulfill the supply of novice matches unless there's a truly large influx of new players. I don't foresee this being sustainable under the current leveling.

Novices get kicked out of novice matches too soon due to fast leveling. Either slow down leveling or increase novice  level cap. Otherwise there won't be enough demand for novice matches created by the Teaching Tournament.

gold teacher is when you finish all the teaching achieves.

Including 9 and 10 which include luring babies with candy into your creepy sex sandbox. Where in 10 they must be a pilot.

Yes, I'm aware of that. That's exactly the reason I asked if this was a new badge or not.

Questions answered, if I missed yours or you want more info just let me know.

As far as will there be enough new players?
Oh boy, there are going to be a ton of people fresh on the boat constantly throughout that period if our estimates are correct, even if it was just level ones.
If for whatever reason, this turns to be untrue, we'll definitely compensate everyone for the time they're able to put in.

Thank you for the interest everyone and congrats to HCWindo and DoktorBarron for being the first to sign up!

Myself (robovelcro) and Red-Tiger would be very excited in doing this! We haven't played Guns of Icarus in a while, and this has encouraged us to start again!

In fact, my framerate upholding, I should be recording and uploading videos of the matches,

Hey Xylo,

You can definitely join in this event!  If you go to the docks you'll also find a bunch of guilds and people looking for players that want to learn to get better.

If you have any questions about the game definitely ask and I'll be happy to help as well.

Mr.Disaster claims the new patch ain't so bad. Knowing his love & hate relationship I... don't know. But if I only need to cool down, then I'll be ready for 15th to teach. If I won't get stuck in my KNTG project (disadvangtages of being a leader).

One thing - please. DO NOT put an advertisement near advertisements of games like Battlefield or COD. I beg you. I know how indie development works and shit, but I'm so done with people not willing to listen, or insolent kids.

For sure however if there will be some KNTG member (for those who don't know: KNTG is a Student Society of Game Developers, at least I believe it's the most proper translation and explanation, operating in Warsaw University Of Technology, gathering those who are willing to learn how to create games, and do so in semestral inside competition projects) buying it, cause I'll announce the sale during the next meeting, I believe I'll spend some time teaching the ropes new members of my clan.

Examples: Flight Instructor Elite for pilot. Gunnery Drill Master or Gunnery Instructor Elite for gunner. etc.

@Richard, Nope, but you will be the only 45 in a novice game so I believe that should be enough to show off "I know what I'm talking about."
Let me talk to the team and see if there's a better solution though.

Until which date can people apply?
I would love to participate in this event, but I haven't found a partner yet.

What happens when your partner decides to give up after a few rounds(/days) and you would like to go on. Is there a way of mixing up partners?

Thanks in advance!

Hey Yar,

You can apply at any point before the event ends.  That means until the 29th -edit- you can still join in.
You are free to play with anyone else signed up for the event, or sign a new partner up at any time.

Thanks for the quick response!
Thats good news.

That means until the 22nd you can still join in.

Since the event lasts till the 29nd, I think you ment 29nd, right? ;-)

Would be awsome if we could get some kind of a nametag, just for the event to show we've the best intentions to help the new players.
(Maybe something like the current WANTED, but then blue/dark green? Only showable in the novice matchchat/ingame)

I really don't care about items, teams, points, badge and so on, but I like to play with random people and/or be helpful.
Since I play on different times of the day and I won't be reliable as a partner, can I sign up alone and match up with any teacher that is online at the moment? No need about point and blah blah.
Also can I join novice matches/lobby alone as spectator?

I agree with Schwalbe on the teacher status. Something player can see just looking at your name like "community ambassador", so they can ask you question even ouside the teaching matches.
Otherwise, with a level 45 and the attitude to teach others, most of the time you'll be just a show off.
One way to do this could be create a teachers clan (that would make easier to know which teacher is online), but I understand that some of us don't want to leave their clan and this may not be an option.

Names are signed up. If partners are not found before the date, I will be assigning the singles together.

Unfortunately adding in a special color for names does require us to take down the master server, so we probably won't be doing that.

That would be too much for a single event, that is true  ;). Thank you for bringing that back up again.

I've finally found a teaching partner: Wolf One
We would like to participate in this event as a team.

I think it would be awsome to get a 3v3 or even a 4v4 match going on if we can get it off the ground. Anybody else up for this?
Feel free to message me during the event if you want to play a novice match with me.

Oh my name is up, I'll have to check later. I won't command a ship in a match while I'm a solo, I'd be a spectator and advise both sides, not for points of course (since that doesn't count)

That said, I might have a partner after all, waiting for confirmation but my friend Freedomna might team up with me.

I'm super hyped for teaching, especially after today. I had the privilege of flying with a 1/1/1 new player as my gunner and training him was a blast, we were in a non novice match and he took to the game fast, 3 matches on a pyramidion and he was ready, eager, and able to crew my spire, and do a fine job of it. Truly the joys of teaching, eh?

I'm hoping to train many more new players now that we've had this influx. I'm sure you all are as well.

I've been joining ships with disconnected captains to help out the team. I leave after the match but almost none vote to rematch. I gotta say I didn't expect this many new players.

Default loadouts need to be remade or reworked, at the very least swap the positions of merc and flak on pyra and junker. Gunner = pipe wrench.

I could be a helping partner although I am mainly active from 6 - 11 (UTC) Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London.

I'm a great captain so willing to teach those wanting to control the skies and I'm a decent engineer so I can whack a few skulls to help them whack components.

*disclaimer - I will not whack skulls: I will teach people to whack parts instead...*

I may not technically be a teacher in this game but I had a great 2 hours last night helping Nanoduckling with one of his Nano's Noobs yesterday teaching them how to be an effective engineer and when to fire different weapons.

Furthermore, there have been a metric tonne of very eager players this far week - I am constantly swarmed with individuals wanting me to help them - I am always eager to oblige.

Although I don't watch YouTube very often - it has shown some great potential  :D

If there's room for a meh teacher, I'm in with whoever.  EST is highly preferable.

The event has almost come to an end, and I am curious what other people have experienced so far.

I have found out that alot of new people are willing to take advice. It feels good to see people progress and being thankfull for your tips and tricks.
However, there are some individuals that feel too good for your help. Luckely, those are not the majority of the players.

Would certainly participate in any upcomming teaching related event.

Unfortunatly, the server outages caused a lot of issues. I did many solo teaching matches however my partner had a very tight schedule so we only got in two matches. Still, any people we taught is wonderful ad OI hope we grow the community.

I could never find a partner, so the few times when I did participate were solo. I tried to give advice to both sides but  I could only do so much. I'd love to participate in any similar events in the future, but I need to gather myself a new crew (and probably set up my own clan :P). If anybody wants to fly with me, feel free to add me :D
