This is the start of my new Workshop project. So far, it is a pretty basic British-style pith helmet with the reference picture just pasted on for a texture. I have not decided how or if I will 'steampunk' it up. I am open to suggestions. The dyeable part will likely be the fabric wrap over the sideband.

This looks awesome.
Firstly, whole helmet would be dyable, I really imagine it look cool in black or dark red or.... pink
Secondly, regarding "steampunk it up" thing you can just add a bunch of stuff like this:

Maybe not the cogs but basically some scars and screws, perhaps something to make it look like it's partially made from random (s)crap
You can also just add the googles on the helmet

Imagine how cool you'd look with one pair of googles on your helmet and other on your eyes :D Or one pair of googles on your helmet and some other "googles" on (like cigarette or moustache, which take up the google spot).

There are a lot of examples with goggles, but we already have one of those. I also did not want to make it entirely dyeable due to the look of the pith. I was considering something like this, though, and maybe a holder for spare monocles and cigars. Things steampunk big game hunters would need.

Or, you know, just go batshit insane.....

10/10 would buy

Some progress. The strap and buckle are nicely modeled.

Those helmets often had elaborate cap badges like this:

Perhaps you could do the metal wings and bullet logo of GOIO?
-
I was actually thinking about an octopus or elephant emblem.
-
Whale emblem would do the work perfectly
-
Shoot me some example whale badge images.
-
Simply spiffing.

I'm a big fan of this.

The emblems were often based on the service that was wearing them. The Police and Fire Brigades often had Pith helmets in their uniform. Having it as a steampunk Firefighter's helmet would be quite appropriate. Failing that, make a separate one as a firefighter's helmet.
-
Hmm. Since the emblem will be a separated (floating) part of the mesh, It could have multiple versions. Too bad there is not an extra 'hat/hair decor' options.

Your hat needs a hat-hat. Cue even more workshop items! :P

More progress made. Textures are still stand-ins and UV map is even more so.

I replaced half of the bullets with a test wrench on the other side. I felt it would reflect better on gunner and engineer classes, and severely reduce the poly count. The wrench is pretty basic right now, but will be improved and shinied up if I decide to keep it.
Here is a turnaround. (http://youtu.be/7bh1wQERs9c)

Update. Adjustments are needed, of course, but I really like the way the badge turned out. If the gear looks familiar, it is because it is the same gear I modeled for the Sky Queen (http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=425282306) decor. The rest is modeled pretty closely after the GOIO logo at the start of the game.

sub-note: since I modeled the high poly completely to bake to the texture, I have a nice model that I could (with a few adjustments) send off to get 3d printed. I have never done such a thing, but it might be pretty cool.

A moment of pure inspiration,
I really like these ideas and the development of the Helmet but, now:
I really want one of these...
