Title: What do you name your ships and why?
Post by: Ayetach on April 09, 2015, 04:26:37 pm
Hello forumites!

I've seen some pretty zany names on GoIO and on occasion inquire about their history. Here are mine:

In the beginning I started off with Nordic Mythological creatures and some of the ship names evolved over time for various reasons, I also originally had the call sign KNM which means Konglige Norsk Marine which essentially means 'Royal Norwegian Navy' as I am Norwegian after all :P - but later I renamed that to KTN which is the call sign for kTen subclan and pays tribute to its history as a group through the games I play today :)

Squid - KTN Fenrir
History: Fenrir is a nordic mythological creature (the wolf) and it felt fitting for something that ruthlessly attacks its prey as a ship like this.

Mobula - KTN Jormungandr
History: The great snake Jormungandr from Norse mythology, its an awesome name, an awesome creature and was admittingly the leftover name I had for this ship.

Pyra - KTN IKEA
History: Came with an assembling kit and everything :P Pretty self explanatory.

Galleon - KTN Valkyrje
History: Valkyrje, nordic angels that raise the dead from the battles fought by Viking warriors. Galleons just have that Goliath aura fitting for itself - esp since its a superb support ship.

Spire - KTN Yggdrasil
History: Yggdrasil is the tree that holds the world of many beings together in Norse mythology. This ship reminded me of a great tree (of death more like XD) it was previously called 'lollipop' in Norwegian as well.

Junker - KTN Hrimthurs Boreas
History: Back when triple art junkers was a thing, I felt Hrimthurs was a fitting name since it was the name of trolls who froze their victims into stone (paralysis much the same to victims of arti junkers), the Boreas was greek term for winds (from a discussion I had with MysteriousMedic in finding Ryder related names for ships).

Goldfish - KTN Onomatopoetikon
History: This was a fun one, Onomonopia, the origins came out from Heldigris and I talking about ship names during Team Lazy's participation in SCS a ways back.

So what are your ship names and history behind them? Share your stories below!

Squid - The Applebee
History: reference to the government spook/stealth spaceships in the Halo books.

Mobula - Flying Nimbus
History: Reference to Son Goku's Flying Nimbus In Dragon Ball, which he rode to get around places. I named it this after I noticed the Mobula looks like a cloud.

Pyra - All Seeing Eye
History: We all get this

Galleon - Orbital Super MAC
History: Reference to the Giant MAC (Magnetic Accelerator cannons) in the Halo books, which are... well, Magnetic cannons that fire giant metal slugs. Super MACS, however, were even bigger, and were in Planet Reach's orbit. Super MAC's are basically two times the size a normal MAC.

Spire - Kami's Lookout
History: Another Dragon Ball reference

Junker - *TEMPORARY* FlammenWerferBlimp
History: It has all flamethrowers, so why not just get a German reference?

Goldfish - Honour thy Crane
History: One match, as being a super rad Blenderfish captain as usual, I ram killed 3 ships in a 2v2. The cool part, though? These three ships died from rams just becauset they backed into the crane of death on Paritan.

Endnote: I know, I'm a super nerd.

Galleon- HMCS Wanderlust: It looks like a trading ship, so...
Junker- HMCS Arkos: The name of my favourite RWBY ship.
Pyramidion- Fist of the Unicorns: Reference to Halo, and ramming.
Mobula- HMCS Hailfire: I like Hades.
Spire- Freud Was Right: Phallic symbols EVERYWHERE
Goldfish- HMCS Champagne: Because POP

Galleon: Overachieving Walrus

History is basically I was using it to 'cheeve whore and the name sort of stuck.

Pyramidion: Terminus Est

History: A badass executioner's sword in Gene Wolfe's New Sun series

Spire: ---Redacted---

History: It looks like one of those black bars over censored stuff

Squid: El Muid Campeador VII

History: Taken from El Cid Campeador, it is the latest in a long line of mine squids.  Yes I only fly mine squids because they are amaaaaaazing!

Mobula: Bananabula

History: I painted it yellow. It looks like a banana. It confuses casters who try to say it. What more can you ask?

Goldfish: Shostakofish

History: Shostavitch is a badass composer. Shostakofish is not a composer, and is also not badass but whatevs.

Junker: Bruh-nker

History: Because it annoys FluffyHetsche :D

I should definitely post on this thread.

My inspiration for Steampunk, and my inclination to love Airships, comes from Ghibli Studios. Movies like Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and Howl's Moving Castle impressed me with their giant flying machines.

So, I've attempted to name every ship in reference to Ghibli works.

Goldfish - Tiger Moth
(https://typewritermonkeys.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/tiger-moth1.jpg)
Tiger Moth was a Pirate Airship in Castle in the Sky. The Protagonists crewed on this ship to find Laputa.

Galleon - The Goliath
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wgNhx_3p-Ak/UBPfsJmfT7I/AAAAAAAAAQU/lI2Mh1162EU/s320/laputa2.jpg)
The Goliath was an Air Destroyer in Castle in the Sky. The Antagonist, Muska, flew on The Goliath to reach Laputa. It had an impressive broadside armaments.

Spire - Laputa
(http://entropymag.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/laputa-castle.jpg)
Laputa was the "Castle in the Sky". The Spire, with its cylindrical shape, felt like a Laputa to me. However, I might end up finding a better name for the Spire.

Mobula - Porco Rosso
(http://moviemezzanine.com/wp-content/uploads/porco_rosso_movie_image_01.jpg)
In the Movie Porco Rosso, Porco Rosso flies the red seaplane Porco Rosso. I painted my Mobula maroon, and it looked like a porco rosso, so I named it Porco Rosso

Squid - Wolf of Tibere
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/150x100q90/221/bulkarzgw.jpg)
In a small scene in Proco Rosso, two seaplanes launch against invading pirates with an announcement "... Black Stallion, Signore Bulkar, and No. 2, The Wolf of Tibere, Captain Visconti!". They get shot down immediatley, but it was still cool. Sorry about the low-qual photo. It was the best I could find for this obscure plane.

Junker - Junkers G.38
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UEwQDmyPX90/VAdu8cJH4tI/AAAAAAAABgc/awkOZ2DHlSw/s1600/Wind%2BRises_Junkers_G-38.jpg)
This is a new one. Renamed just this week. Junkers G.38 was a German transport aircraft created in 1929. It saw much use during the Second World War. How this plane is connected to Ghibli studio is yours to guess. *Hint: It features in their latest film about a Zero Plane manufacturer.

I haven't got one for the Pyramidion yet. Nothing so far has struck me as being like a Pyramidion. But don't suggest anything, its more fun figuring it out myself. Currently, my Pyramidion is named Hawkbit, in reference to Richard Adam's Watership Down.

And another funny little reference. My character is made to look like Muska's Agents in The Castle in the Sky. Pictured below.

Anubis (Pyramidion): Namesake of my first cat, who I lost to antifreeze poisoning
Diego (Junker): Namesake of the brother cat of the brother/sister pair, who I also lost to antifreeze poisoning
Fin-esse (Goldfish): Goldfish have fins + finesse
Lexx (Squid): Named after the titular ship from the Lexx (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lexx) series.
Doubloch (Galleon): Nothing special, shortened version of "Double Lochnagar" which is the ammo for the carronades I took when I first flew it.
i- (Spire): "i-" kinda looks like a Spire.
Flytato (Mobula): It looks like a flying potato.

Such creativity.

I am so bad at names. All of my ships are named Infallible. I do this because it allows me to end all of my official correspondence involving GOIO with "Lanliss, Captain of the Infallible", which I enjoy. I suppose I can add Roman numerals after their names, in the order that I named them.

EDIT: just thought about this. It might help to explain the fact that I have had a pretty decent track record of keeping alive. I am usually not the reason my team loses, at least not directly. It might sometimes be my fault due to lack of support for my teammate, but I am rarely the one dying.

Junker: Bruh-nker

History: Because it annoys FluffyHetsche :D

OY! >:C

Pyramidion: Honeybun - Dunno, seemed fitting and I like bunnies c:

Goldfish: Lebkuchenherz (used to be Hwachahugs) - I wanted something cutesy in German and I like this term, so why not? It means "gingerbread heart". Hwachahugs is self explanatory if you know me :D

Mobula: Chubby Bunny - The mob really reminds me of one of my first pet bunnies because she was really overweight. Don't judge me, I was 8 when I got her :c naturally I fed her way too much..

Spire: Pfannkuchendrache - Literally means "pancake dragon". It's kind of an inside joke I have with Draaaaaaagon, though I don't actually remember who or what exactly started this..

Galleon: Snapping Turtle - Doesn't need much explaining now, does it?  :D

Squid: Catallena - Once again: I just like the sound of the word and seems to fit the squid in my opinion c: It doesn't really mean anything, it's just the name of a song I enjoy!

Junker: The Boomcrab - Makes stuff go BOOM! (I generally fly munkers, so yeah.. MINE ♥) The shape of junkers just reminds me of a crab, especially since their guns are mostly on the sides. Looks like a crab walking sideways ~

My ship names tend to change from time to time. Sometimes they're puns, sometimes related to animals (or both) etc. but these are usually the ones I stick with!

Has anybody done Jenny? Like Forest Gump? Jenny I, Jenny II, Jenny III, and so on and so forth.

dude, we need to fly together, i LOVE castle in the sky, anyways i dont pilot a lot so im just going to name some of my ships
Pyramidion:Currently is the Stygian Night (Its painted black) but i will soon give its original name of Bad Company back (Reasons because a: i love the song Bad company by Bad Company and b: because i dont want to be nice to my enemies)

Squid: Currently the Winds of Tartarus (For awhile i was going for a greek mythology them for my ship names) But will be renamed again as Harassment Charges (reason because i fly it in a harassment style)

Galleon: A Ton of Brick (Reasons: cause i'll ram into you like a ton of bricks. I like galleon ramming  :D)

Taken from another thread with some slight updating

All of my ships (minus my Junker) were named after personal affects of existential philosophers

Pyra: Albert Camus' Coat: Algerian born, french philosopher, Albert Camus just might be my favorite thinker of all time. And the French are nothing if not good dressers. Look at that man's coat

Squid: Kierkegaard's Collar: Another one of may favorites, and that guy had a big collar

Galleon: MUS Kafka's Hairgel: Kafka had some tidy hair. He had to hold that mess down with something

Junker: MUS Tipz n Trix: Named for Bard founder, friend, and Sensei to all the early Bards who has since been eaten by Dota 2

Spire: Dostoevsky's Beard: Brilliant Russian novelist and owner of a pretty rad beard. The spire is long and kinda beardlike. Plus, it's fun to say FEAR THE BEARD whenever I 1v1 a metamidion with my gat/flak spire

Mobula: William James' Eyes: One of the most important figures in early psychology and a philosopher with a pretty intense gaze.

Goldfish: Nietzsche's Stache: Because of Nietzsche and his lovely facial hair. Doubles as a shoutout to Nietzsche's Mustache from [Clan] Clan Clan (who also has some great ship names)
Where it fits, I added MUS in front of my ship names, as it was the very first Bard clan tag.

Recently I've changed the name of my spire to La Peste which is the French name for the book The Plague by Albert Camus. It's a fantastic piece of work.

I named my junker George B. Wylith for no other reason than I thought it was a cool name when I made it up.

My galleon is Hippopotamus because that's just how it feels to me.

I use a variety of puny/load out specific names on my goldfish.

What are you talking about?! [MUS]gods dont exist!

So I did put out my ship names last time, but I didnt explain all. In no particular order:

Squid - Greasy Dream

Once I joined the Iron Fork Of Friday in a doublemerc pyra. I got along with Squiggly Bandit, it's pilot anfd we've formed for a few matches after that. Once he was telling the crewmen, "Bring greased rounds, I want that grease aaaall over this ship." It quickly evolved into a series of sexual innuendos, and since then Greasy Dream represents my desire to find Squiggly in real life, take off his clothes by force and rub grease aaaaalll over him.

Galleon - Industrial Nightmare

The older brother of Greasy Dream. I came up with this name while I was literally looking at the galleon with the intention of coming up with a name- and then noticed the two giant pipes sticking out from it's starboard that pumps steam out every so often. Made it look Pirate-ey, so Nightmare fits okay aswell.

Pyramidion - St. Glaswegian Kiss
This one was suggested by a friend. Glaswegian Kiss I believe is a slang for a headbutt with the literal intention of breaking one's face.

Goldfish - Jessica Nabar'O
This one has quite the story behind it. It was the character name of a friend in a Starship Troopers Roleplay server whom was a Petty Officer 2nd Class (NCO) of the Federal Fleet and had somewhat of an adorance for Ravens. He also is the one who suggested Glaswegian Kiss and has had dreamed of a black dyed Raven decal'd fleet of his own at one point, so when Raven Skull was added I made an effort to make his dream come true (except he doesnt play often anymore)

Junker - Bag of Chips

Self explanatory, I once Hydro'd my balloon to death in an attempt to "open the bag" with this thing.

Spire - Tourist Attraction

Spire is just nearly impossible to hide sometimes.

Mobula - I'm currently still on a naming journey with this ship, will post when I find a name I'd like.

All Japanese or anime names. Only a few historic notables I feel like mentioning.

Shinryaku - The 1.1 Squid: Squid Girl reference. This name hasn't been used much outside of Dev App since 1.2 hit. The word means "Invade/Invasion". It was infamous in 1.1 with fast, high speed attacking, and evasion flying. Since then, all iterations of the Squid are unworthy to carry it. I won't use the name until there is a ship worthy of it.

Fuyukai - Post 1.2 Squid: Reference to a word used by a character in an anime. She goes around saying Fuyukai to everything. It means "Unpleasant". It stands for everything I hate about 1.2 Squids and general displeasure with having to fly them. Current build is feeling better but I cannot retire the name just yet.

Furugoori - Sniper Pyra: Reference to Frau Furugoori from Robotics Notes. She is a very off balance character and as such this Pyra is similar as it does both CQC and range fighting. This name sees limited use since sniper and Pyra nerfs render the vessel unusable.

Uchikudake - Charging Pyra: Reference to Sidonia no Kishi. It means "Smash them". A term used in the theme song of that series. This vessel is equipped for CQC fighting only and will be as violent as possible in accomplishing destruction. Butt rams, goomba stomps, you name it, it does it.

Yukemura Senkan - Flagship Galleon: Means "Steam Battleship". Hidden reference to Space Battleship Yamato. Generally this vessel has a mixed, kill + disable build where both sides can pose serious threat without arming timers.

Suzumiya - Classic Galleon: Named after Haruhi Suzumiya. Classic build with long range side and CQC side. Doesn't see much use anymore.

Munker Art Online - Mine Junker: Sword Art Online reference. Was originally Junker Art Online before mines were added. Flagship Munker build. Initial theory crafting started on this tub.

Lailalo - Goldfish: Named after Birdy's ship from Birdy The Mighty: Decode. Lailalo sees most use as a trainer ship.

Flying Fecal Matter - Spire: Not a Japanese or anime reference, I just hate Spires and wanted to name it a giant piece of poo and not get caught in the name filters (Will change to calling it same in Japanese if Muse alters the filters). The balloon is even colored brown.

Druaga - Classic Spire: Named after Tower of Druaga anime. This was used more back when heavy weapons were good and when component placement made sense before Muse messed it up.

UPDATE:

Pyramidion: Fist of the Unicorns: Named after the armor/band name abbreviation from Halo 4.  Abbreviation is FOTU(S), and the name itself is from a fictional band comprised of UNSC Marines on the UNSC Pillar of Autumn.  Also rams.

Squid: HMCS Team Sloth: HMCS stands for 'Her Majesty's Canadian Ship', and Team Sloth is a reference to my OTP, and the irony that sloths are really slow.

Galleon: HMCS Wanderlust: It's a Galleon.  Galleons were common exploration ships.  Also it sounds cool as hell.

Junker: HMCS Arkos: Arkos is another Ship of mine, and sounds really cool.  It sounds kinda brawl-y, which fits, as I go Meta/Close Disable.

Spire: HMCS Freud Was Right: ...I don't think I'm allowed to explain this one...

Mobula: HMCS Hailfire: I love Hades.

Goldfish: HMCS Gold Rush: Mainly a Hwachafish, named for the golden rockets rushing at your face, and my tendency to ram.  Name changed to And He's OK for Lumberfish (Monty Python, anyone?), and Champagne for Blenderfish.  Because *pop*!

All of my names for my ships are nature inspired.

Pyramidion - The Sky Wolf - Because when I fly that strong, sturdy, steady ship with a mean bite. I use Wolf hunting tactics.

Galleon - The Sky Bear - Because when I fly that big, mean, brawling ship. I fight brutally like a Bear.

Squid - The Sky Fox - Because when I fly that fast, agile and light little ship. I'm fast, light, sneaky, and clever like a fox.

Junker - The Sky Badger - Because when I fly that durable, mean, viscous ship. I fight viciously like a Badger.

Spire - The Spying Owl - Because owls are amazingly silent, and far-sighted predators of the sky that can pick out tiny animals in the night from very far away.

Mobula - The Sky Whale - Do I need to explain? I don't think I need to explain.

Goldfish - The Screeching Hawk/The Screaming Warhawk - Because you can swoop down fast and create some serious noise with those front guns.

-----

The Goldfish's name is subject to change. It's the only one I'm not sure I'm comfortable with.

I named my pyramidion after the Kobi Levi. This is a designer from Israel who makes awesome ducky shoes!

As long as I was obliged to have duck-related ship names, I used this name for ship. It also refrs to Levi Mann, a fellow duck member.

I think my favorite name is the for my mobula. I've always really liked the ship but when it first came out it was often regarded as too difficult to engineer/coordinate and therefore worthless despite its rather fancy exterior design and overwhelming forward firepower. So I named it Caveat Emptor which means buyer beware and is also a legal principle which states "that the buyer alone is responsible for checking the quality and suitability of goods before a purchase is made."

My Squid is named after a fancy dagger called a Kalis.
My goldfish is call Antei which a Japanese word meaning equilibrium/stability because it was my most favored ship for a while.
The Pyra and Spire just have names that reflect their design: Forward Fire and Tower Spiral
and the Junker and galleon have dumb names that seemed fitting: Reave and Von Brom

I always go for names of Elegance. Here are the ones I remember off the top of my Head:

Pyramidion: Theronian (the name of a bomb in Metroid Prime 3)
Spire: Elysia (Planet from metroid prime 3, stems from Greek Elysium)
Junker: Bryyonian (From Bryyo, planet in Metroid Prime 3. can you tell I love that game yet?)
Galleon: Etria (Don't have a source, just came up with it)
Squid: Dreyfus (From henry Dreyfus, American engineer who came up for streamlining on some of the NYC's hudsons)

Golfish and mobula I cannot recall off the top of my head but they are also from elegance.

Nah, as the plasma beam shows, they would be melted first time we fight somebody with a flamer. Let's get Ghor in here. (Actually, Gandrayda was the best of the three IMO.)

Spire - Senpai's Serendipity: Named in honour of the craziness of an April Iron Fork...

Mobula - The Fiery Pantaloons: Named for the shape and of course, a curry I had the night I first used the Mobula.

Pyramidion - The H.M.S Nautilus: Named for many reasons 1) I am from England, 2) Nautilus is a cool name and 3) Have not thought to change it over a year...

Squid - Drop the Squid Beats / CrpArrow3; Given two names in honour of The Bards.

Goldfish - M.C Powerpuff: Named because I am Captain Fabulous, obviously...

Galleon - The Drunken Mann: The name speaks for itself whenever I use the Galleon...

Squid - Wind shock
Pyra - Minion summon

All of my ships have been Dark Tower (Stephen King) references shortly after I've started to pilot. Some of the ships have been renamed later on though.

Junker - Lud: Dark tower reference

Spire - Stomp Stick: Spires are sticks that can be used to pub-stomp. Also Rhinos used to stomp.

Mobula - Metacenter Contempt: The mobula looks like it's Metacentric height (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metacentric_height) should cause it to flip upside down as soon as its balance is slightly disturbed.

Pyramidion - Rambtion: ram+ambition = Rambition.

Squid - Discordia: Dark tower reference... Also the Godness fits the ships playstyle.

Goldfish - Mejis: Dark tower reference

Galleon - Gilead: Dark tower reference

Mostly song references

Pyra - Rosenrot - Rammstein song/album, Rammstein => ramming stone => battering ram and the rosenrot album cover has a frozen ship that reminds me of fjords etc

Junker - Undead son - Tarot song, the junker is made of scrap so its kinda undead

Galleon - EffervescingElephant - Syd Barret song, galleon is big like an elephant and quad hwachas are vaguely effervescent

Sabaton songs:
Goldfish - Ghost Division - song about the blitzkrieg, the goldfish seems like the best ship for rapid overwhelming attacks

Squid - Night Witch - song about russian night bombers, ".....unexpected, undetected ...."

Spire - White Death - song about a famous finnish sniper, still have fewer kills with this ship than the real man

Mobula - Drunken Kereru - Only non song reference - Named for the New Zealand wood pigeon which like the mobula has a distinctly rounded belly, is rather clumsy in flight and has 5 forward facing light guns.......

My ship names are either rave-related (I'm a raver/rave DJ) or named after fonts (typography/graphic design nerd).

Spire: Elysium - named after one of my favorite happy hardcore tunes of all time, by Scott Brown - link to listen: https://youtu.be/GyZiBzbVRgU

Junker: Kandi Rave Party - some ravers in America wear loads of bright plastic bracelets, called 'kandi'.  I'm a kandi kid.

Pyramidion: Boots 'n' Cats - say it out loud repeatedly.  turn on some strobe lights and lasers.  insta-rave

Squid: Budmo Jiggler - the stupidest name for a font I've ever heard, and a goofy-looking font

Galleon: Bodoni Egyptian Pro - slab serif font.  Feels weighty like a galleon, especially bold of course

Goldfish: Helvetica - boring font for boring ship

Mobula: Novecento Wide - because it's wide, duh... though the font itself isn't that wide

pictures of the fonts in question:

Budmo Jiggler:

Oh I forgot my Junker,

I named my Junker H.M.S Octavarium as I am a huge fan of the band Dream Theater and since I am a Keyboardist, I named my ship in honour of one of their best songs with arguably the best Keyboard Solo in history!

I suppose enemies say "I'm trapped inside this Octavarium!" whenever I try and ram and kill them...

Most of the names for my ships are in jokes between me and the rest of my clan. It was a great day to be had by all when we where having the naming ceremony.

Squid - Hentai

I think the joke is fairly obvious on that one.

Galleon - Dynamic Entry

This was mainly because I was shouting that whenever we came out from a dust cloud or fog in front of the enemy.

Pyramidion - Dairy Farmer

It's a bit of a joke but I am know to some of my friends as "that pirate looking fellow" and I am a big fan of the Monkey Island games.

Goldfish -Fartfish

Lots and lots of flamethrowers with that one.

Junker - Pog mo Thoin

This is a throw out to my home. If you know the irish you can guess the meaning.

Spire - Tallest

For it is big and mighty.

Mobula - Honest Mistake

Mainly because it was one, when I first picked that ship.

Most of the names might get changed later on, but I think these will stick around for a while yet.

I don't name it, simply because I don't pilot a ship. I have no faith at all in my ability to lead competent people into battle. I don't even know how to make a ship go up and down, and I'm close to 300 games. I just prefer to be an engineer - that hard working rat who scurries around the ship and helps everyone wherever he can =) It's hard to not love engineers for the effort they put in, and I both receive and try to share that love in abundance. It's all I need =)

I named mine after the 7 virtues. Being a Catholic, I've always enjoyed the writing and stories of some of my religions scholars. I wanted to try and almost romanticize my ships with one of the greatest themes of the Roman Catholic Church.

Temperance Spire: Lumberjack, Hades, Light Flack, Mine Launcher

"In knowledge is temperance, in temperance is endurance, in endurance is godliness." 2 Peter 1:6

The definition of temperance is self-restraint. I think that is a apt name for this ship, as a Spire must have plenty of self-restraint to do well. It is a ship that requires control and modesty. It is also my favorite ship in the game :D

Diligence Junker: Meta; 2 Artemis, hades, gat, mortar

"May God, who has caused his Name to dwell there, overthrow any king or people who lifts a hand to change this decree or to destroy this temple in Jerusalem. I Darius have decreed it. Let it be carried out with diligence." Ezra 6:12

Diligence means persistent in your work. This Junker will be persistent in its job. Hurts you from far away, kills you up close.

Chastity Pyramidion: Meta; Gat, mortar, flamethrower, beacon

"For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders." Matthew 15:19

Chastity basically means no sex outside marriage. This is a bit of an ironic name, because, you know, the pyra likes to ram.....hue hue

Charity Goldfish: Lumberjack, flamethrower, beacon flare

"For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in." Matthew 25:35

I actually named this ship its name because of its lack of killing power versus disabling. I view that as charitable

Kindness Mobula:Gat, Mortar, Hades, Light Flak, Mine launcher

"I led them with cords of a man, with bonds of love, And I became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws; And I bent down and fed them." Hosea 11:4

Killing people with kindness.

Patience Galleon: 2 Lumberjacks (same side), Hwacha, Heavy Carronade, gat (side gun), light carronade.

"Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary." Galatians 6:9

Being that the Galleon has the acceleration of a tuna sandwich, I thought this name would fit quite well.

Humility Squid: Mortar, flamethrower, mine launcher

"It is better to be humble in spirit with the lowly Than to divide the spoil with the proud." Proverbs 16:19

I am a terrible squid pilot, which is why I named this ship its name. It is a ship that truly humbles me if I ever get a big head.

Anyway, thats all of them. :D

Ayetach... I believe there was a topic like that, loooong time ago. But - ok. I'll elaborate once more.

Sometimes I change names for my ship, so - I'll list those I use frequently. If the name comes as a link - it's the referrence to my inspiration.

Most "standard" names of my ships come after the songs by awesome polish band Obscure Sphinx.
Prefix KNTG (http://polygon.pw.edu.pl/) is pretty obvious, I believe, so I'll skip it.

Squid

Spire

Pyramidion

Junker

Goldfish

Galleon

Mobula

Goldfish: The Dirty Goblin, named after one of the songs I am known to sing while piloting over voice chat: Three Dirty Goblins.
Squid as Tanya noted is the Rust Razor, named after one part of the song Drunken Sailor, another Shanty I like to sing.
May need to learn more shanties for my other ships.

Junker-Lower the Boom,  I only fly a full munker

Pyramidion-Bad Company, Love the song, and who wants to be good company to your enemies?

Squid-Winds of Tartarus, I run attack squids, so winds from the depths of hell seemed appropriate

Galleon-A Ton of Bricks, Anyone who pilots a galleon knows they handle like a three legged pig, plus I like to ram with it when possible

Goldfish-The Valkyrie, It sounds good and I couldn't think of a better name

haven't really flown a mobula or spire so I haven't named them

I have piloted very few matches, but I usually name my ship Stormchaser after the sky ship captained by Quintinus Virginix in the Edge Chronicles stories. When I pluck up the courage to pilot a bit more regularly I think War Boy and Furiosa will also feature in the list, just because Mad Max is an amazing film.

I captain I work with most often usually flys a Junker and has settled with Lost and Confused as his ship name. I think this is partially a half hearted attempt to lure people into a false sense of security and partially because he's often a bit drunk when he plays GoI

I started naming my ships after ship names from Iain M. Banks' novels and also started making up new names that fit the theme.

Junker - Clear Air Turbulence
Even when the skies are clear you might encounter some

Squid - Levity and Mirth
Happy ship, happy name

Mobula - Congenital Optimist
"Hydrogen will save us, right?"

Pyra - Demiurge Engine
The creator of all things evil, and the burner of engines.

Gal - Gunboat Diplomat
"You see that ship right there?"

Spire - Irregular Apocalyplse or Dorsal Tesseract
Sometimes your gunners hit things, sometimes they don't

Goldie - Vivacious Inquisitor
It's small, it's red and it's angry

Oh oh, I'ma do this as my introductory post to the community forum. So, sup people!
So, my naming theme is either very stupidly subtle double innuendo or just bad pun, usually revolving around inner circle jokes of my RL friend circle.

Galleon - Krobe Depantie
First Krope Dela Pootis or something, but I felt it was too obvious and too TF2'ish, so.. Yeah.

Spire - Raising Tree By Dawn
Subtle morning wood joke there.. Because.. Spire is a log?

Junker - Derriere Lefist
It'll sink from behind.. I tell ya.

Pyramidion - Scarveliauta
Sounds like neat mythological name or something? Those who speak the same main language as I am will spot a stupid spurdo thing.

Mobula - Inconspicious Brick
Pun on the mobula's brick like shape. Even better, I've a CQC loadout for it that is.. 23% effective.

Goldfish - Bob
Short name for a short lived pet, gets it?

I've recently renamed my ships to have a cohesive theme. If you've read The Old Kingdom Chronicles by Garth Nix, then you will know why I named them like this. For those who haven't read the books, suffice to say that the main character uses seven magical bells, that do different things.

Mobula-Ranna   Ranna is the Sleeper, and the smallest bell. The mobula kinda looks like a pillow, and is one of the smallest ships.

Goldfish-Mosrael  Mosrael is the Waker, a loud bell. Most people's first ship, whether to crew on or pilot, is the Goldfish.

Squid-Kibeth  Kibeth is the Walker, a multipurpose bell that is difficult to use. The squid is all about mobility, and you can easily screw up with it.

Pyramidion-Dyrim  Dyrim is the Voice, it can be used to silence the living. (This one was kinda iffy with how it fits with the theme.)

Junker-Belgaer  Belgaer is the Thinker. The Junker is a highly versatile ship, and along with the mobula, has the most loadout options. This require the Pilot to think more so about what they will use than on other ships.

Galleon-Saraneth  Saraneth is the Binder, a large bell that commands authority. The Galleon has more firepower than most of the ships, and is the largest. Saraneth isn't the largest bell, that will be the next one, but it is used often by the main character. It is used to dominate and subjugate, and used properly, the Galleon can dominate the playing field.

And last but not least,

Spire-Astarael  Astarael is the Banisher, and also known as Astarael the Sorrowful. It's the glass cannon of the bells. Used properly it kills everyone who hears it, even the user. So it is arguably the most powerful, but the most dangerous to use.

And those are my ships. To anyone who hasn't read the series, I highly recommend it.

Only gonna list the ones with established names. Also, my names are dumb.

Mobula - Prom Queen
No real reason behind it other than I was discussing how me and my girlfriend were prom queen and king just after I said how I have no permanent name for my Mobula. For some reason, I felt Prom Queen suited the rather pretty and prissy ship better than any of the temporary names I went for before.

Spire - Inverted Bong
It looks like one and it suits my lifestyle somewhat. Plus, glass cannon matches up with an actual bong by my warped sense of correlation.

Junker - Anime
It's trash (in the sense that it is made of trash, not that it's a trash ship).

Galleon - Bang Phalange
To match our clan name, Fingerbang, in a way that sounds a little nicer off the tongue. I didn't put huge amounts of thought into my ship names, as y'all can see. When I first came to the game, I thought that Galleon was going to be my go to - muh big guns. Little did I know that it's easily countered and by no means more powerful than any other ship.

Any ideas on how I can continue with my dumb names? Other ships tend to have a new name every match.

I need to think of better names.

If possible, keeping the HMCS.

And of course, Fist of the Unicorns is perfect.

My ship names change very often, and most have a theme to them. The current theme is locations in the game "Sunless Sea"

Pyramidion: Venderbight. A colony of nearly dead citizens all completely wrapped in bandages.

Junker: Avid Horizon. A gateway to and unknown location guarded by giant statues.

Mobula: Irem. A city where conversations will take place in future tense.

Spire: The Gant Pole. An area which contains large corpses and legendary ships.

Galleon: Grand Geode. A huge volcanic crystal on which a town sits guarding The Dawn Machine.

Squid: Polythreme: A city where clay "workers"  are manufactured and led by the king of 100 hearts.

Goldfish: Gaider's Mourn. A town full of ruffians and pirates of all sorts.

I came across a player the other day who had a ship with the following name:

"USS SS USSR."

I thought the ship was called the

"United Space Ship - Schutzstaffel of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics"

Thats a pretty original and unusual name

I believe the person thought of it as

United Space Ship, Steam Ship and I cannot remember what his version of USSR meant...  :-[

All of my airships are named after the airships in my Steampunk novel...that I am yet to finish (14,000 words so far, it's little, I know.)
Spire- The Man O' War, a guard ship used for guarding against sky pirates.
Junker- The Bolted Nut, A 'Snatcher' ship, basically petty thieves, much like lesser sky pirates, very poor.
Galleon- The Primrose, A pirate ship, that's it.
Goldfish- The Sultry Siren, a shuttler airship, much like a taxi service.
Squid- The Hawkeye, another shuttler airship, but with better weaponry, more expensive.
Mobula- The Manta, similar to the spire, another guard airship, but used as more of a floating barracks rather than an actual offensive craft.
Pyramidion- The Burning Blubber, a ship primarily used for hunting Sky-Whales, and Leviathan whales, (like Sky-Whales but much, much larger.)

Since 3/7 ships have names of sea creatures, I decided to name mine all after sea creatures, using genus names:

Goldfish - Carassius
Squid - Todarodes (flying squid, literally)
Mobula - Batoidea (Mobula is already a genus name, so I used the Superorder name)
Junker - Balaenoptera (the Junker isn't the biggest ship, but its balloon looks whale-shaped)
Pyramidion - Xiphias (because swordfish also have a pointy end)
Spire - Hippocampus (it flies upright like a seahorse)
Galleon - Salacia - (This one is different, named after the Roman goddess of the Sea, because the Galleon is a grand, royal ship and doesn't fit a sea creature that I could think of)

I enjoyed naming my ships. That's really when they became MY ships.

I don't pilot very often but of the ships I do use:

Goldfish: Herald of Sylka (It used to be called the Cloud Cutter but I decided to go for something more grounded in the world and I needed to pick a side in that whole Nalm-Sylka rivalry. The Goldfish is also my favourite looking ship too and is fairly easy to pilot.)

Pyramidion: Battenberg (It's a nice cake.)

Squid: Night Sparrow (Seemed appropriate.)

How brutal.

I Change my ship names every week to keep things nice and fresh.
You don't want to wear it out after all.
Let's see...This weeks names are...

Squid- Rage of sky.
I like to be aggressive and getting in people's is the best way to do it.
But I'm physically small and can't take much at all.

Pyramidion- Stormrunner
Triangle shaped and meant for ramming, I have this feeling that running through storms, be it bulletstorms or actual Thunderstorms, the Pyra would be in its element.
...in actual gameplay though...

Spire- Skynail
It's long, pointy shaped, and thin. It's probably a nail. In this case, it's a Skynail because it flies obviously. I'm debating on whether or not to call it "Sky's Toenail" though.

Goldfish- Intervention
It's fast and delivers a decisive blow on the dime. It probably doesn't have much in it, but in the right place, it can stop anything.

Junker- Spelunker
At first it was just something to make it rhyme with junker. Now that I built it to incorporate mines, I realize Spelunker is related to actual mining and decided it's perfect.

Mobula- Linebreaker
Well...it's fat and wide, and has plenty of front guns. It's probably related to a trench line.
Other than that...not much else.

Galleon- Shockside
The many Hwatchas that this ship always carries is enough for a shock and awe tactic is it not?

SHUT YER TRAP YA GIT, COZ YOU FOUGHT ME AND GOT 'AMMERED LIKE A LITTLE HUMMIE'

Burn the heretic, kill the mutant,
PURGE THE XENO

Anyway, I named my ships in very stupid ways:

Mobula: Don't flank me, guess why?
Junker: Shenanigans, because I use it mainly as munker, or to do stupid things.
Spire: TroughFireAndFlames, I had my best time when playing this ship with a heavy carro and 3 flamers. the enemy didn't have chem spray. And I like the song.
Goldfish: Trash, because this is the one ship that I can't bring myself to appreciate.
Squid: ImSorryForMyCrew, and when I say it, I truly am, engineers that happen to be there, hate me, and usually I fly with almost random builds.
Pyramidon: Skyshard, a friend suggested this name, I liked it, I used it.
Galleon: Dies Irae, better to hear sang by Mozart's choir, the sight of two hwachas shooting on you, at mid to close range is truly magnificent AND terrible, and begins a day full of wrath.
It's former name was "Furiosa" that means in Italian "furious", only it sounds terribly better when said by a native English speaker, I opted for this name since it would be my flagship name in every game involving ships, and because I started using the galleon because I was getting angry.
Title: Re: What do you name your ships and why?

In order that they were named:

Goldfish - Dart
-Originally a blenderfish build. The Dart charges in, takes down the balloon of the target, then chases it down to pin their opponent to the ground. I rarely take Hwachas on my goldfish.

Mobula - Depth Changes
-When I first flew my Mobula, I was screwing around with a harpoon - x4 mine loadout. The name was a pun referring to how the mines were used. (Aim DOWN. Aim down!)
-Nowadays I use it to refer to how I fly. Vertical mobility is key for keeping a mobula alive and in arc.

Spire - Stake
-The cousin of the Dart. Can you guess what I try and do with this? (hint: Drogue chute)

Squid - Squib
-I enjoy calling Squids Squibs over voice. Even if it sounds and looks dumb. ESPECIALLY when it sounds/looks dumb.

Galleon: the Innkeeper's Daughter. She's beautiful, she's fanciful, and she's likely to toss you through a window if you try to pinch her rear.

Pyramidion: Staff of Charon. Pretty self explanatory, since the Pyra has a very Greek sounding name, and I decided to make it seem more grand than it really is.

Goldfish: Surprise. From the movie Master and Commander. I didn't really have a better name for the Goldie, so I just went with one I knew.

Squid: Apophis. The embodiment of chaos and disorder. So, basically, a Squid.

Mobula: Cumulus. Explanation not really needed.

Spire: Pillar of Atlas. I followed suite with the Pyra, mostly because I couldn't think of a better name.

Junker: Scavver/Patches. Patches works well because, well, it's a ragged little ship. Scavver just because I like the name.

I've kept the same ship names for nearly all of my career in GOI, so I might as well stop by and explain them.

The Pyramidion RAMMING SPEED, inspired by Worf's quote during Star Trek First Contact... view here! Exact quote is at 40 seconds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ni8MURSwSZg

The Junker KMS Sigmund Freud, named for the German psychoanalyst, but I have no idea why I chose to name it after him. I'm sure it has something to do with my mother. You'll have to analyze me, I guess. I used the designation KMS because that's what the World War II strategy game Hearts of Iron series used for German naval ships.

The Galleon FULL BROADSIDE, because I'm not subtle.

The Mobula Kaiser Chief, named for the UK band I've adored for a long time (though they're awful live). A popular song was Ruby, available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qObzgUfCl28

The Goldfish Bright Ship Humana, because I love Bad Religion and it's mentioned in a song by them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-We8ogMQ-U

The Spire Sun Crusher, because I thought it looked like the absurd ship from the Star Wars expanded universe, viewable here: http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/0/01/SunCrusher_egvv.jpg

The Squid Ackbar, because puns. IT'S A PICTURE!: http://img.lum.dolimg.com/v1/images/admiralackbar1_2_845df144.jpeg

Pyramidion - The Winged Hussar, because I play aggressively and charge at enemies like a Polish winged hussar. Inspired by the song Winged Hussars by Sabaton (https://youtu.be/75zmIj_4LFQ).

Spire - White Death, because when I got the game my friends and I only used the Spire for sniper builds, inspired by the song White Death by Sabaton (https://youtu.be/iLTpKs2ylP4), a song about a Finnish sniper (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simo_Häyhä).

Mobula - Aces in Exile, inspired by the song Aces in Exile by Sabaton (https://youtu.be/8QwkyKS3dng). Only correlation to the song is the fact that the song is about flying.

Goldfish - The Last Stand, because when in doubt about what to fly, I pick a Hwacha-Fish, hence my Last Stand. Inspired by the song The Last Stand by Sabaton (https://youtu.be/bRhg2zvalXc).

Junker - Whale Hunter, after the long-time troll build of mine, with full-harpoons. This is also the only ship that I have never piloted.

Squid - Into the Fire, after my favorite squid build, with two flamethrowers and a harpoon. Inspired by the song Into the Fire by Sabaton (https://youtu.be/RSvTAJiTUfE).

Galleon - Ghost Division, named after the song Ghost Division by Sabaton (https://youtu.be/keXfiffBzFw), a song about a division of tanks (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7th_Panzer_Division_(Wehrmacht)), because the Galleon feels like a tank.

Pyramidion - Flaramidion: Flare Pyramidion. I like flares and bad puns.

Spire - Flire: Flare Spire. I like flares and  bad puns.

Goldfish - Flarrofish: Flare Carrofish. I like flares and.... you get the theme.

Mobula - Flarebula

Galleon - Flalleon. Used to be "something with flare".

Junker - Flunker

Squid - Fluidflareflagsquid. Used to be "A Fluid". I changed it during Cake's Unbirthday tournament week 2 to Fluidflareflagsquid, because I was one of the flagships that were supposed to be killed. I don't know how stuff escalated to that level.

I tend to change my shipnames spontaniously if I have something witty in response to another shipname in the lobby.

Why not bring this back for my first post?

All my ships are named after sea shanty's and I'm desperately in need of another ship so I can have one named Fiddler's Green.

PYRAMIDION- Heave Away Haul Away
--The majority of the time this name is a lie, since I love to ram, but in sniper dunes matches it's true.

GOLDFISH- Drunken Sailor
--This is the one everyone knows, it's one of my main ships, and it's in honor of both my bad driving and certain people's habit of being drunk in lobby.

SQUID- Blood Red Roses
--I just really really love this name, but I don't really run squid...

GALLEON- Coast of Barbary
--Abreviated from The High Coast of Barbary. Sounded piratey.

SPIRE- Lowlands
--Spire for me is a lot of times a suicide ship, tho I try and call it a kill shit for crew morale. This is an extremely sad song and would def recommend a listen.

MOBULA- Spanish Ladies
--Known mostly from Jaws. See if you can guess why this ship got this name

JUNKER- Blow The Man Down
--Fun little song since now I usually run a munker. Also is great because whenever The Mann is in lobby this name gets an extra letter.

Pyramidion: The Mayfly -> Aside of being the name of one of the first airships it conjures astute precognitions of my piloting skills. Also mayflies are pretty amazing, being the only insects that have two imago stages. And they serve as an indicator species. If they can survive, everybody can.

Galleon: Volvox -> Painted green for extra volvoxness. Volvox are green algea, sphere shaped like the galleon balloons, and they are extremely awesome since they are on the verge of being multicellular organisms. They are right in between being a multicellular plant and being a colony of single cell algeas. Just like a good crew should be!

Mobula: Lysozym -> An enzyme that is part of the immune system and breaks down hostile bacteria cell walls. Like, ideally, my mobula breaks the enemy armor. Also, the mobula resembles in its shape lysozym crystals.

Junker: Leukocyte -> White blood cell. The Junker has a white, rather shapeless balloon. And what could be more fearsome than white blood cells?

Goldfish: Tardigrade -> Amazing tiny animal that can survive even in outer space due to anhydrobiosis (death-like, dehydrated state)! Extremely resilient, like the goldfish is. Boiling water? Liquid helium below -260°C? 6000 Bar pressure? Radioactivity? No problem! Also, again, shape similarities.

Squid: Wolfram von Eschenbach -> My favourit medieval author who subverted old literature standards and rules. Even the Middle High German original still reads extremely modern in some parts. I feel his writing style is as nimble and adventurous as the squid.

Spire: IOOth Red Balloon -> 99 of them go by, the 100th shoots back. 8) Needless to say I painted it red.

I've had the same ship names for a while and they are probably due for an update.

G W Bush: for the Goldie and squid I mostly just picked it to troll euros back in 2013 cause they all hated bush. Might have to update this to trump if it seems like it would have the desired effect. At one point all my ships had this name. I'm also from Texas home of the former president who is still quite popular here.

Kersploosh: for the pyra and spire cause that's kinda what they do to other ships. It also seemed like a really annoying name to see you got killed by.

America F Yeah: for the gal cause those quad hwatcha's bring a lot of freedom and democracy especiallly if the hull is down. Also for euro trolling.

Mine have a bunch of self-deprecating names

Junker is Cpt. Worse than Junk, Spire is Goodbye Victory and so on.

The only one with different name is my Pyramidon, which I recently renamed as Benoit since I abuse a lot of the ramming abilites of the ship.

Might as well put the ship names I have for now. In inverse order of how unlikely I am to change the name.

Mobula: Roasted Marshmallow
- First ship I named. Was named during a time when flamers were much more common and Mobulas were new.
Pyra: Reverse Overhead
- A callback to Chivalry. Not as overpowered as at first glance. Still overpowered.
Galleon: I'm with you Brother
- "Together! For the light, Brother!"
Junker: Put your grasses on
- "Nothing will be wong."
Spire: Challenging Work.
- "... outta doors. I guarantee you'll not go hungry 'cause at the end of the day, long as there's two people left on the planet, someone is gonna want someone dead."
Goldy: Buff Heavy Clip
Squid: GFA Scuttler
- Mercantile Guild name. Probably changing it to "Newbie Nightmare" next time I fly it.

Pyra: Rasenshuriken
Fish: Chidori
Squid: Kirito y Asuna
Mobula: Expansion Jutsu
Junker: Gun Gale Online
Galleon: Shingeki no Kyojin
Spire: Desu Nōto
