Title: Trains?

"I like trains."

I would ask this at the next fireside (except I'm at school at that time), but trains?

Do you guys think that trains would have a place in the GOIO world? After all, train is a major part of the steampunk culture.

Yeah, actually, they might.  Not as big of a role as they should because nobody knows how anything works any more, but in the big cities I don't see why not.

This brings up a far more important question, though; Are there War Trains?

As in, MG emplacements on them with Flak Gun carts spread out evenly?

In GoIO there sure as hell is.

On both Paritan and Canyon Ambush there are remnants of old train tracks. Seems likely that they exist in the world somewhere.

Thinking,... Angleans probably revived an old subway system to connect their underground city centers.

Factions other than the Arashi probably has tracks between city centers, mines, and refineries.

I bet Yeshans have war trains to support their land wars. Ooh, what about a train-airship carrier? Carts designed to transport short-range skirmish ships to the front lines. Lift out of train cars and start raining death!

And I talked about this somewhere:
Valkyria Chronicles is almost a steampunk game. They use blue magic ore (ragnite) instead of coal. Ch. 10 pt.2 (Liberation of Fouzen) features a Canyon map with a rail spanning across it. On that rail sits a railway gun called Equus. The objective is to destory the bridge beneath Equus and send it crashing down. In addition to fighting your way to the bridge, the Equus puts down Mortar fires, moves around, and locks down a half the map with impressive machine-gun barrages.

A few reference pics:

Fouzen, not dissimilar to maps we already have.

Equus, an impressive railway gun you must defeat.

So,.. something similar to this mission would be really cool in Co-op. Not that fighting ginormous behemoths aren't enough.

You know, Gustav sort of cannon could make a really interesting boss fights.

First, theres the whole aspect of air to surface combat, which could add some very interesting game play.
And we can have a massive mega-gun. One shot, very long reload, limited arc and very slow reaction (rotation) speed. Deals massive piercing primary damage, and a massive explosive secondary damage. Such that it can kill a Galleon in one shot. In addition, it'd have a large convoy of ground and air based units to protect it.

The player's objective would be to destroy the gun before it reached a destination (a siege of a city?). The railway gun could be slowed down by either destroying a well-defended railroad bridges (forcing the gun to take a more solid, alternate route) or damaging its engines (which would be repaired by the engineers on the railway gun). Complete kill if the player manages to destroy the well-defended bridge with the mega-gun and its convoy on it (very difficult).

Airships v. Trains!

How about we actually just put a Balloon on the cannon and make it fly super slowly towards the city.

If it fired at you, it'd be knocked back 400 or so feet.

trains would be prone to raids from airplanes and other puny sky vehicles.

it would simply be too expensive to maintain them. As it just takes a flak to destroy the tracks and its not like trains would be doing any evasive actions.

And it wouldn't take long to just raid, take the cargo they got and then leave.

Though if they have UNDERGROUND trains, thats another matter. But steam powered trains underground is kinda dire. I hope you brought supplies of oxygen tanks.

Since the invention of the carronade, flamer squid most citizens of the world prefer to just tie a mine balloon to their lunch and let patrolling squids cook their dinner. So evidence suggests they did exist, but I'm unsure if they're still in use in the world, I've not seen a functional track

There are some benefits of using trains over airships. First, crawling on land is usually more fuel efficient than soaring throughout the air. Second, trains can make long, extended journeys that airships cannot. Third, trains can carry more loads than an airship.

Even if all train tracks were inoperable, factions would be repairing them. There should be trains transporting valuable resources from mines to manufacturing centers (Airships would't be able to transport much at a time).

Also, our Skirmish Airships are not outfitted for long flights (no sleeping quarters, food storage, and restrooms). Extended campaigns would rely on Giant Air Behemoths or Train Airship-Carriers. Several Airships could be mobilized near places of conflict on board these trains.

So.. Muse... Trains?
(Can someone ask for me on the fireside chat and tell me their response? I can't make it due to being-in-school).

Deserts are hell on metal.  It's possible that the airships have an advantage in the transportation business because they don't have to worry about maintaining GIGANTIC lengths of track in the middle of nowhere.

Also a train can't really fight well.  It's stuck on tracks which limit movement and are easily sabotaged when someone isn't watching.  I understand the idea of putting flak cannons or machine guns on a train to defend it (from those obnoxious airship bombers, perhaps) but a war-train for offense alone seems a little pointless.
Title: Re: Trains?
Post by: Koali on April 07, 2015, 10:21:28 pm
Yeah, freedom of movement is an airship's key advantage. And, airships are actually very fuel-efficient, as they don't need power to stay aloft, just lifting gas.

Title: Re: Trains?
Post by: Indreams on April 08, 2015, 06:46:27 am
Well, it'd be more of a tank.

And there is a reason why we still have trains in the year 2015. They are the next best thing to waterships when it comes to transporting hundred container-full of materials.
Airships aren't quite efficient in that they can't pull a hundred cart full of materials across the air. Trains can.

And its true trains can't fight too well. In wars, their purpose was mostly to transport supplies and troops from population centers to front lines. But Trains were also a way to get those massive guns on warships deployed on land. Train artillery could be massive and mobile thanks to the nature of tracks.

And trains are like the beginning of Steampunk. I can't imagine GOIO's world being without them.
Title: Re: Trains?

ineed, if trains were used offensively, they'd be more suited to siege artillery
Title: Re: Trains?

Or a heavy defense.

If I were to set up a steampunk city defense,

I'd have a thick wall around the city. On the wall would be track. On the track would be a war train, two engines on either side, with heavy, heavy armaments. The train would be a mobile turret. City guards would be able to reposition themselves with the help from the train.

If the city was to rebel, the train would sit at top of a gate, and crush any attempts to escape the massacre coerce the populous to an agreement.

We aren't just talking about infantry. Airships, Landships, Artillery, all that. You need a war train to fight that.

And if I was managing a mine, small war trains on mine cart tracks. If we get raided, pow-pow-pow. If miners go on a strike pow-pow-pow coerce them into a negotiation.

Trains could make pretty good AA emplacements for industrial areas which already have lots of tracks.  just need to stick an hflak on your boxcar, all set.
