Title: New thing I learned about Guns of Icarus
Post by: Indreams on February 11, 2015, 09:23:15 pm
I've played GOIO for about a year now, and I still find things that I didn't know about the game.

For example, just now, I discovered that, when you are on the ship-screen, you can press your movement keys (wasd) to rotate the ship, such you can examine the bottom of the ship.

I feel like my words aren't doing justice. I'm kinda mind blown to write correctly. Try it for yourselves, go to ship-screen and press your movement keys.

I bet there are numerous other things that you've learned after having played for a while. Like, b to captain-target spot, the drums when other ships are near, etc. etc. Post'em here! :D

I didn't learn about spotting scope zoom until last week

I used to think "shake x spots" meant you had to shake your ship around in an area. Cue many frustrated dancing ships

When I first discovered this it was right after one of the patches and I thought it was a bug in the game till I got talking to others.

I didn't learn about spotting scope zoom until last week
Riggatto....do I know what this is? lol

You don't need to zoom in with the spyglass to spot stuff. You can just click on a ship with the spyglass out

No I meant like when you are in the right click zoom, you can scroll up or down and change the zoom level, that's what I discovered recently

Targetting reticle tells you stuff. like arming time. Did not know this, and I'm still not sure how it exactly works. But its a thing.

Me, Lueosi and InkJet have been recently updating the wiki quite a bit, lots of really good content is in there. No longer is it an outdated source. You should check it out.

It's like this is actually a multiplayer game that is actively being played. Thanks for the effort.

1.3.7-

- Tar Barrel is now click-to-activate on a 3-second cooldown

But if you have tar on '3', and bind the activation to '3' it will work the same as it used to.

Using Phoenix Claw slows you down.
It also only damages turning engines.

(As a captain that is Phoenix Claw and Kerosene Happy, I have no idea how I just found out this.)

I learnt that in some languages when I tell someone "Fix the hull" and use the voice command to fix the engines, that some languages translate this to "Man the guns!"
Oh and that apparently banshee and Artemis are very similar looking weapons to some players ???

Really? You mean Phoenix claw? I didn't remember damage to the main engine, but I'll check.

In 1.4.0 King of the Hill,...

You need to have the number of points as well as the point itself to win the game.

It is possible to gain the required number of points by killing the enemy, without ever capturing the point, but to win, your team must possess the point.

Just look in the wiki :( : Phoenix Claw (http://gunsoficarusonline.wikia.com/wiki/Phoenix_Claw)

On your wiki you write that "Due to the already very high turning speed on a Mobula and Squid, Phoenix Claw is not necessarily needed on those ships."

I'm guessing you meant the Junker instead of the Mobula in that sentence? The Junker's maximum turn speed of 16.18 deg/s and turn acceleration of 15.24 deg/s² far surpasses the Mobula's maximum turn speed of 14.02 deg/s and turn acceleration of 3.50 deg/s².

No worries. I've been working my way through the wiki, proof reading every page for small errors and bad grammar. But I thought you might want that one changed as fast as possible, we don't want to give new players the wrong idea. :P

Because lu wrote that and I can't really testify for what he meant, I do believe he was trying to go for something like this :

Due to the already very high turning speed and acceleration on a Squid, or the high difference between the low angular acceleration and the high top angular speed on a Mobula, Phoenix Claw is not necessarily needed on those ships.

And that's what I changed it to.
It makes more sense, Mobula doesn't need the phoenix claw because the low acceleration in relation to about 4-5 times as high top speed - that would be even further increased with phoenix claw and will only be reached in extreme cases of 180/360 degree turns(which are completely useless on Mobulas since if you are turned 180 degrees to the enemy, you are either doing it wrong or you're trying to escape which is also doing it wrong because turning your back with a Mobula isn't good.). Also, on most Mobulas that are thought out well, you will have complex builds that require exact arcs/long range weapons that require stability - Which makes achieving precision after the usage of phoenix claw more counter-productive than productive. Might as well have a bunch of vertical mobility tools since this is what the Mobula does best.

So the general consensus is to use tools that make the mobula better at what it does best, instead of balancing off what it does poorly? Interesting.

If you play in an intelligent way that doesn't expose your disabilities as much, you can compensate for them and put more effort into your abilities rather.

I have noticed that there does need to be a distinct difference on the wiki between fact and opinion. And regarding opinions, it is crucial that it is written in a way that it gives out a broad range of advice that encourages experimentation and not "alea iacta est" do's and don'ts.

The beauty about games is that while there are popular tactics and stratagems, there is always the potential for radical shifts in the meta at the cutting edge of experimentation. Our job on the wiki is to provide the keys and show the doors, not to lead people down the exact paths that we ourselves took. Otherwise, we are no better than the Reapers from 'Mass Effect' who guide/force civilisation down limited paths of technology/strategy so that there can be no opposition to their dominion.
