Title: Ability to choose your title
Post by: Fluitaire on March 29, 2013, 11:40:38 am
I've heard tell of a wish to change the title you get from leveling to something lower. Personally I wouldn't mind being able to switch mine to grease monkey, just for the off beat humor of it vs Chief Technician. I think its something of a customization option that wouldn't be overly hard? (feel free to punch me in the face if it actually is MUSE team) to implement.

titles unlcokable through achievements, and removing the level system based on achievements, and putting level based to games play.

all I have to say.

That'd be kind of fun to play around with.

titles unlcokable through achievements, and removing the level system based on achievements, and putting level based to games play.

all I have to say.

Removing the level system would make a lot of people very, very upset.

I'm not sure... A lot of people work hard for those levels, and that could screw them up. I don't really see much of a problem with the current system anyways.

How is it not already gameplay based? Earning achievements requires gameplay so I dont really understand.

it was not to change the subject of the thread.

choosing your own title would be awesome.

I just put forward the idea of making a gap between level and title, so  you can only get titles through achievements, and level is based on the amount of experience you have (the number of games played)

Putting in my support for being able to choose your title.

(Not supporting the weird level stuff people want to change)

I don't like the idea of people being able to lower their title, because that is all you can see within the in-game menu. If, perhaps, each level had a few different titles associated with it, I'd like that.

If you let people scramble the titles, they lose their significance as rank.  Being able to tell at a glance whether someone is going to need the song and dance on how to play GoI is pretty useful too, I don't want to waste concentration explaining the game to someone that's already level 5 in that role.

Among high level players we pretty much know who every one is. So artificially lowering your rank would only serve to confuse new players for a match or two. I could sign onto a server and say "I am a level two pilot really," then proceed to abuse the blind spots, and use pilot items so that my squid never takes a hit. They would probably figure out that I was more experienced than I was pretending to be.

I think the idea is that your current level is still show, but you can change your title so you have the name "Chief Engineer” instead of “Specialist," and still have it showing you as level 10 and not 9.

I imagine this would be the main reason a lot of people would want to adjust their ranks, sandbagging, even if it only works mid-match.

Changing that confuses when in-flight (where the level is not shown).
And, part of the level experience is the title you get, so I'm sorry but I'm against the possibility of changing your title to whatever you like.

If you don't like the current titles, why don't we propose new (and funnier) ones for higher levels?

I'm all for this, captain titles suck after Aeronaut.

I'm not sure funny titles will work out, the ranks are part of the "feel" the game trys to convey.  You're a mercenary hiring yourself out and this is your title, you're an experienced so and so.  Sort of like how the ships have all this plating and flags on their sides to make them look bigger and more solid even though the playing area is actually flat and open-air (whoever designed these ships is a fucking genius) or how the UI is brass-colored with the film grain on by default to give it that old-timey feel without actually being old-timey, it's important that the player buys into the setting.

Eh. Choosing titles is common in other games and I don't think a big deal? Some people just like the ones you earn early in, and as a cosmetic item, there's a good case (IMO) for making it user-selectable. But how about these as a compromise:

* Lock out the really early titles, say the first 3 levels. So you can choose any title from 4-10, but people will always know you didn't just buy the game today. The exact selectable range could be flexible.

* Prepend the title with a number, like say [10] Aeronaut. This is actually a bit more intuitive... I don't know how many people memorize the titles tables but I sure don't!
