As the title says, specifically for captains. I mean: 'master sailor' or whatever it is, is so lackluster, I don't feel it conveys the appropriate tone of badassery. It is the view of many that once you pass level 6 'Aeronaut' the titles go down hill. It says something when I can't even remember the proper level 10 title because it's so unremarkable. I heard somewhere that level 10 gunner title was 'Striker' see, you nailed it with that one. Give us captains some lovin' muse <3
TL;DR: Captain titles need a revamp.

Start using naval ranks?
Ensign-1
Lieutenant jr grade -2
Lieutenant-3
Lt. Commander-4
Commander-5
Captain-6
Rear admiral lower half-7
Rear admiral upper half-8
Vice admiral-9
Admiral-10
-
I agree. "Sailing Master" is just such a step down from Chief Navigator, which in turn isn't as cool as Aeronaut. I like Lord Dick Tim's idea.
-
I don't know about the naval ranks. It kind of lacks that steampunk flavor. Aeronaut for example screams airship captain. I'd have to have a look at the full the current list to get a better idea (anyone know where I can find it?) but I'd like to see something ranging from like "Master Aeronaut" downward.

This won't work, just because of Zill.... he is lvl 10, and I fear that if he is named "Admiral RearAdmiralZill" would cause the game to enter into a logic loop that would then deteriorate, and finally implode... on the other hand it would be a good way to nerf Zill..... choices choices choices......
On a more serious note, I agree that the names lack the proper awe... but I'm not sure what names would be good for it...

I really wish i could have a signature sometimes. Id have half a page of quotes like this.
I agree that after Aeronaut, the level titles took a slight creative nosedive.
-
To be honest, I don't mind as long as I'm not called something patronizing like "able sailor".
-
Aeronautical Genius
-
Aeronautical Prodigy... sounds a bit nicer than genius :P
-
Good point. There is probably a character limit though at some stage.
-
Fleet Commander?
-
King of flying?
-
thats more like guild ranks.

"Admiral RearAdmiralZill"
I come across plenty of Captain "X"s around the lobbys, so I don't see how someone's name should influence the overall title system.
-
It doesn't, I'm just making sport at Zill's name.... :P
-
Rear Admiral Upper Half RearAdmiralZill
-
Aeronautical Badass?
-
Just remembered there is a title called 'Steerer' COME ON!
-
99-Captain Overlord/Legend
one of the muse guys changed his levels to 99
-
Tim, I like your idea just a bit, but you can't expect an Army Brat to take the side of a Navy Fan...Sorry :P

Aeronaut is possibly the best title for a pilot.
I like "Master Aeronaut", "Aeronautical Genius", and "Legendary Aeronaut" for the titles above it.

Yeah, to be honest I probably dished that one out too early. Actually, I kind of wish I hadn't used it as a title at all -- "aeronaut" is supposed to be a general term to describe everyone who crews an airship, like a sailor, not necessarily a pilot (and a middling one, at that). Oh, well.

It's definitely not too late to change them :) Just some strings in a function, no biggie.

Here's some of my suggestions for titles. I followed the current trend and wanted to tie them to the jobs, not ranks: so as the player levels up, it shows a more prominent title for that job. My main gripe is with the 'Junior [job], [job], Chief [job]' titles, as most seem a step down from the titles below them. Let me know what you think.
For Pilots:
lvl | Current | | | Suggestion |
1 | Sailor | | | Cabin Boy |
2 | Steerer | | | Steerer |
3 | Able Sailor | | | Helmsman |
4 | Helmsman | | | Navigator |
5 | Skipper | | | Sky Jockey |
6 | Aeronaut | | | Aviator |
7 | Junior Navigator | | | Skipper |
8 | Navigator | | | Eagle |
9 | Chief Navigator | | | Aeronaut |
10 | Sailing Master | | | Master |
11 | Shipmaster | | | Ace |
For Engineers:
lvl | Current | | | Suggestion |
1 | Swabbie | | | Swabbie |
2 | Deckhand | | | Deckhand |
3 | Able Engineer | | | Journeyman |
4 | Greaser | | | Greaser |
5 | Roustabout | | | Roustabout |
6 | Airship Engineer | | | Technician |
7 | Junior Technician | | | Machinist |
8 | Technician | | | Eighthmaster |
9 | Chief Technician | | | Quartermaster |
10 | Specialist | | | Shipwright |
11 | Bosun | | | Bosun |
For Gunners:
lvl | Current | | | Suggestion |
1 | Powder Monkey | | | Powder Monkey |
2 | Lookout | | | Lookout |
3 | Able Gunner | | | Triggerman |
4 | Canoneer | | | Canoneer |
5 | Bombardier | | | Bombardier |
6 | Aerial Gunner | | | Artillerist |
7 | Junior Artillerist | | | Marksman |
8 | Artillerist | | | Sharpshooter |
9 | Chief Artillerist | | | Striker |
10 | Striker | | | Gunslinger |
11 | Marksman | | | Deadeye |

Like a lot of these especially the gunner ones,
But seriously, skipper?
Good ideas as always.
-
Zeb pretty much nailed it.
-
With skipper I was considering Aerialist. I didn't want to sound repetitive and give a feeling of progression, and wasn't sure if it would conflict with Aeronaut.
-
"Sky Whale Tamer"
But in seriousness, I like Zeb's list for the most part. A lot of the names do feel pretty lackluster.
-
Thanks Zeb for compiling that list and making suggestions that make sense. I still like the title Aeronaut because it sounds like Astronaut and brings with it connotations of experimenting with untested technology in dangerous places. As for the upper echelon pilot ranks I think there should be some leadership connotations like: Wing Leader, Squadron Leader, and Sky Marshal.
-
+1 vote for Sky Marshal

You just sudgested the top 3 pilot ranks in my book with sky marshal being 11 for pilot.
-
Keep in mind that lvl 11 may not be the final level.
-
So I would first like to start this by saying damn you Paddling.
Also maybe COGS champs should be given COGS themed title, engineer is a gearmaster, gunner is a errrmmmm gunmaster?, and the captains get a ummm yeah so i need some help with this :P
Maybe something as simple as "COGS Champ Squash" Smolletts name is too long :P
