Title: Gender-neutral accessories
Post by: sparklerfish on July 20, 2014, 06:48:00 pm
I can definitely understand why costumes are gendered -- the female and male avatars have very different bodies and therefore different costumes.  I can also see why some accessories, like a mustache, would be male-only (though I would totally rock a mustache on my females if I could).

But.... what is the justification for a female character being unable to have a pipe?!  Or that cool top hat with the spider on it?  There doesn't seem to be anything about those particular items that would restrict them to male characters.  I know that some accessories, such as the cigarette, are usable by both genders, but I'd like to see that expanded to more items that aren't really intrinsically masculine or feminine.

Mmhmm, plus, so many of the hats/goggles are very different for men and women, I would love to be able to get them cross gender as well.

For example, the level 10 (or maybe 12?) engineer mask unlock is a gas mask, the female one is a golden one with a filter on the bottom left, while the male one is like some metal darth vader cthulu mask.

I'd like the two to be able to use each others' masks.

OH!  Also!  Dyeable hair for women!  Why do I have to be a man to have spring green hair?

We can't dye hair either. Trust me, i've tried.

I think the male Maddyson hair style can be dyed.  It seems to act like a hat more than a hair style in that way.

The Khovansky hair can be dyed spring green (or any other color).  I tested it yesterday.  I'm considering male avatars just for the ability to have spring green hair.  This is monstrously unfair.  xD

Come ooon, you girls get streaked hair with the Nightingale cap! Muse, we want moar pretty hairdos!  ;D

Then again, why do you want Saiyan spring green hair? Trying to look like one of those creepy 90's troll dolls? x)

Because spring green is best green and it would match all my outfits!  Clan Clan members are like human beacon flares.

So this.  Both genders miss out on all sorts of costume opportunities because of this.  Moving some hair and goggles around shouldn't be that hard.

Plus, I'm on board with anything that means more spring green.  Spring green still best green.

I don't think even the greenest thing in the game is as shiny neon green as Clan clan members are...  :P

That means we're doing it right!  ;)

Except my hair.  My poor, dull, drab hair.  Sure, I can put on a spring green hat, but now that I know boys can have spring green hair and I can't, I am sad and feel left out.

Dude... if I could dye my gunner's mohawk spring green.... That would be so amazing.

I'm so sick of this, especially with the goggles and hats and stuff. I don't see why goggles should be gender specific, nor hair dying or hats or any of that.

I approve, especially with certain levels giving you only male or only female accessory options. Thanks for giving me a cosmetic I'll /never use/.

So let me sum this up:
What do we want
- Make more objects/outfits unisex (for example pipe not only for men, hats)
- Make different versions of the same objects, made for different genders, availible for both (different versions of gas masks where only one gender have one version; let both genders use any of those two versions)
- Make hair dyable (just like Maddyson hair can be)
- (idea from different topic but related) Make separated outfit slot for facial hair for men (and women?). To also give something for women then maybe make-up options? Or earrings? What if someone tries to have facial hair and something that covers all face, i.e. gas mask? Someone suggested solution from TF2 - that some objects are set to be in conflict with another and can't be worn together
When do we want it:
Ugh, I guess it's a matter of minor importance so let's say before Adventure Mode release would be nice.

WHAT DO WE WANT? GENDER EQUALITY!
WHEN DO WE WANT IT? Uhhhh... yeah... whenever you guys can get around to it. Maybe soonish if possible... Please?

Sorry, I couldn't pass that up. But this is definitely something I want to see. Even if they just keep the couple of male-exclusive hairstyles which can be dyed, add a couple of female-exclusive ones that are, then have maybe a few unisex hairstyles which can be dyed as well.

I'd also add that a lot of costumes such as Corsair, War Room etc. are overly sexualised in the female versions. Some people may want to look like a legit female pirate captain, not a pinup! And there's also a couple of outfits (boiler room!) that have a very different style and just look kind of lame in the female version. The two versions don't need to look radically different if you're onto something awesome already.
I'd like a few more "serious" female costumes that are closer to the styles of their male counterparts. And for balance, a topless male "tribal" outfit. :P

Devs said to e-mail them when we feel that some objects are not fair (that one gender has them and another not) so they know and can do something about it.
Also they were quite optimistic about the beards idea.

I do honestly support this; Some things look just fine on one gender while looking just silly and out of place on the other.

And don't get me started on the Tribal Bikini thing.

Did they say specifically who to e-mail?  I would be satisfied with just a female equivalent of the Khovansky hair.  ALL I WANT IS SPRING GREEN HAIR -__-

I guess you can always e-mail (with any kind of problem/suggestion) on feedback@musegames.com
Devs always make it very clear that EVERY mail is read and answered.

The only emails sent to feedback that aren't read are the ones that end up in the spam folder (or the ones that never get to us because of the mysteries of the internet).

Female level 10 pilots need to be able to smoke a pipe too.

I'd totally join the cross-dresser club for the female tricorn. The shape is better, it has got a feather and most of all it doesn't look like a folded rag.

The male tricorn is a bit crap, fortunately the unisex bicorn looks so much better I don't care.

The bicorn makes me feel so...admirally. By far the best hat in the game imo.

Like I was born to fly. I swear it makes me better at the game.

That's just ridiculous. Only the pipe makes you a better pilot.

While we're on the topic of gender neutral costumes, is anyone else a little miffed at the class-based costumes? Skybreaker for the female is an awesome costume that can /only/ be worn when you're playing as gunner. I love the costume, but I never get to use it because I typically don't play gunner.

Yeah, it does kind of irk me.

They're the only customization items to do so, too. Headwear and Goggles work just fine regrdless of class.

this.  so much this.  my choices are so limited because I don't want something overly sexy.  in a lot of cases, I feel I have to settle for drab...

I think this is the main reason I'm so disappointed there's nothing currently like Dust Rider available.  Dust Rider is the perfect blend of badassery.  it's not overly sexualized.  it's also not bulky, dull, or outright weird.  it's just awesome.
please, Muse, make more badass costumes.  for both sexes.  for all classes.  FOR GREAT JUSTICE!

There should be a male version of the ridiculous tribal stripes/wooden panel bra.

Uh, I'm pretty sure dust rider was the kickstarter only outfit. Kickers now get a special version with a medal on the front, but everyone has access to the base suit now =D
