Post by: Squash on March 13, 2013, 04:24:15 pm: You know, outside of steam messages with a very small group of people, I've never really talked about the origins or the 'mission statement' of The Ducks. The entirety of it I don't think I've ever told to anyone except possibly Morblitz and Moriarty. If you're curious or want to know, keep reading, otherwise you better skip to the end, this might be long.

Originally, the intention of The Ducks was the same as the way nearly every group started, and the way most groups still are. A small group of the best players we can collect, and like to play with. It started with me, morblitz and moriarty. Whenever we played we played together, and we decided to only invite people we really liked. Charon was the first, he was just about the best gunner we'd seen and was good to play with, so I invited him.

Well, the next day he started a conversation with me, it went something like:

"Guess what? I talked to my wife, and she's a Duck now, and so are two other guys!"

Uhh, excuse me? What happened to small elite, I don't know these people. But what can I do? I guess just let it go? Besides, how often do gaming wives play anyway? If anyone's curious that would be Shukketsushi, a name everyone probably knows. I let it go, but then literally the next day, less than 24 hours later, he starts another conversation: "Guess what?! I just got four more people, all of them military buddies!"

Damnit. I thought long and hard about letting a fourth person in, and suddenly we're up to 11, and I've never even spoken to 7 of them. What should I do? Say "no way, sorry, no room in the Inn, try King's Gambit down the block"? I'd like to say it was a moment of clarity but really I just kinda said "Fuck it, strangers want in? Let them in, Ducks are open source now." In hindsight I'm really thankful to Charon for that, we avoided ending up on the same road most groups go down. As an aside, that was early January, I still to this day haven't spoken to 5 of those people Charon brought in, they're not in the Steam group, and I'm pretty sure they're just puppets he keeps in his closet or something.

So, Duck are open, anyone can join. People know they're playing with Ducks because we're loud and annoying. Our ships have ridiculous names and we tell fowl jokes. People started joining up. I think people just want an excuse to be weird, and we're still the weirdest group out there. Our numbers grew, and Smollett and Arrow joined up.

They deserve a special mention because it was the beginning of our competitive play. They came just in time for the tournament, and geared us to it. To this day I can't write a single forum post without Smollett bugging me about repair equipment while I'm trying to type this very sentence. Anyone who knows them knows Arrow is the brains of the operation. I want to call Smollett the muscle, but really he's the chauffeur. Obviously we did very well in the tournament, and we were the only ones expecting it. I'm pretty sure the commentators bet against us every single time we played. So as a result we got a reputation as a competitive group, which attracted another group of players that both want to be weird and competitive.

The point of this story is to explain the direction we're heading in now. We have more players that want to play in the Cogs then we can field in one team, even with reserves. We're not the first group to be in this situation, but we're going to set ourselves apart in what we do. Rather than pit Ducks against each other for 8 slots, we're opening a second team. My aspiration is to get the second team functional by week 2 of the Cogs, but we'll see how that works out. I think if someone wants to make friends in a game there should be a place they can do that, and if people want to play competitively there should be a place they can do that too, so that's what we're trying to make. The two things the Ducks will never, ever be is exclusionary, or 'well adjusted'.

As for why "Ducks", I have no idea. I think deep down inside everyone likes Ducks? I have no clue where that came from, but it's not the worst thing to identify a group with. Ducks are as much social as they are lunatics. Ducks are the paste eaters of the pond world. Ducks have the weirdest priorities in the animal kingdom (mostly breadcrumbs). Ducks can be kind of noble, even while making stupid noises. I think it's okay to be proud to be a Duck.

TL;DR: A girl duck is a Hen. A boy duck is a Drake. Baby Ducks are Ducklings. A group of Ducks is a Darling. A bunch of Ducks walking is a Badling, if they're running it's a Brace. A group of Ducklings is a Brood, and a group of Ducklings running around are a Flush. When they fly Ducks are a Flock, but they can also be a Team or a Pack. Ducks hanging out in the water are a Dover, or sometimes a Raft. But when Ducks are swimming together against the current, keeping together to fight the rising waters, they're a Paddling.

N-Sunderland: Just tell them we like breadcrumbs or something.

One of them is in CBRN, the Marine Corps Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear defense group. He's preparing for deployment with a Marine Expeditionary Unit, and every last bit of it came out of the blue for us. Nature of the job, that one.

Another is going to South Korea to assist in the exercises that are pissing the North Koreans off. One is going to shoot at an inter-service competition, following his award winning performance at a Corps-wide competition.

One is currently on the range from 0300 in the morning until whenever they stop shooting.

One is an actual pilot and rapidly deploys to areas of the world that he can't tell us about. He hasn't had a weekend to himself in several weeks.

The final one is an Intel guy. His life has been complicated as of late, due to our proximity to North Korea.

All of them voted for the Paddling to fight against the Muse crew. Whenever they get a minute, they'll be back in the game, flying around and blasting other virtual ships.

That's fantastic! I love how you've done the eyes, looks a lot more artistically competent.

I'm glad you've improved it - like I said in the original post the decal was a rough idea for our logo and I think you may have just provided us with a finished product!

I love both of them, except the bright cartoony colours. However, let's combine them!
Doormaster's version, but Raddigans final steampunk colour scheme. Perhaps a yellowish tint for the duck bill.

I know it's easy for me to say this when I'm not the ones actually making this stuff though! But still, awesome work guys.

Wait just a minute! You're a perfectly good pilot. You didn't bring us down today. The Gents were just better overall. It was one loss, and it was against one of the best teams out there. We were trying to beat them at their own game, and it didn't work. Laying the blame on anybody would be silly.

I remember seeing that we were up against the Paddling in the bronze match, thinking that we had it in the bag. After all, we were SMAC. We beat KG 5-0. We only lost by two kills against Zill's team.

With our 5-0 loss, I learned to never, ever underestimate a Duck.

Pretty much every other clan except us was an established and known clan and we were thought of (looking at you, Qwerty) as not much more than a bunch of gimmicky weirdos who were about to be on the receiving end of a sound thrashing. Which, to be fair, is kinda true. We're pretty weird.

Nowadays though it's an absolute boon to have some of the best aspects of SMAC now residing within the halls of House Duck. The main thing we want is to just play with good sports who enjoy the game as much as we do. I think we're doing pretty well in that regard.

Today was the first of the Hungry Ducks Games, a weekly event pitting two Duck teams against each other. We may possibly expand it to allow challengers from Duck friendly groups.

The Raft has massively reformatted, and is leaner and tougher than it ever was, 'military efficiency', is the correct phrase. The Brood is preparing to enter the Cogs in one week, and is poised to flap and paddle its way up the ladder. And the Dover is now fully formed and registered, in two weeks the nature of the competitive game will change, when the Cogs becomes home to our version of mad scientists.

Over and over we prove to the community that we are the most friendly, welcoming, innovative, and destructive group in the game, our legacy is concrete, and we're at the front of everyone's minds, because we're the goddamn Ducks.

Our greatest accomplishment is defeating our oldest enemy, the Cult of Personality. Most groups exist as solar bodies, where the crew orbit captains of immense notoriety and fame within the game's tiny community. We've managed to become the most affecting group in the game without creating celebrities. We aren't a small number of rockstars with groupies following us around. We're just the Ducks, just the goddamn Ducks, and everyone knows the Quack.

Today is the pinnacle height of the Canard Renaissance, the Duck Golden Age. Years from now, when you're rafting in your pond, paddling to a lily pad, watching over the brood that stay close to your dover, you can look back and remember the day the game changed and the world was deafened by our quacking.

Shukketsushi, Martial Artist and Pretty Lady as Main Engineer
Nascosto, Air Force Intel as Deck Engineer
and Charon, USMC Infantry as Gunner

The premise would be a duel between crews to test the crews' ability to adapt strategy in a one-on-one environment, removing the often frustrating element of teammate performance. It would be fought in a 2v2 map, with only two ships doing combat at a time. When one ship was victorious, it would be allowed to repair, and then then next opponent from the other team would engage from their starting point. The rules need more refining, but here's the starter concept.

Ships would be constrained either to specific ship, specific loadout (which would allow concept testing for experimental builds), specific loadout (harpoons only, flames only, or more imaginitive combinations), and other permutations. The important part in this Iron Chef: Battle Duck-style concept is that the Kumite restrictions aren't released until the lobby is created. This prevents practicing, which is the whole point of selectively testing your crew and its ability to adapt, not the ship.

Sorry about not being very active since I've joined. I've had to rely on a crummy connection at an overcrowded internet cafe, so my games have been laggy. Rather than making everyone deal with someone who keeps disconnecting and reconnecting, I sat out.
I'm getting an apartment with high performance, stable internet service soon and plan on being much more active.

If someone hit us up on green gear at the PB and said "CHEMICAL ATTACK! MOPP UP!" But yeah, we do engine room fire drills pretty often. Instead of getting away from the fire though, we run to the repair locker, don firefighting equipment and go to put it out. Going up and down near vertical ladders wearing heavy, insulated coveralls, poorly fitting boots, hood, mask, SCBA, thick gloves, and a helmet gets really exhausting and miserable.

Haven't had to worry about MOPP for a while, mainly because we just set CBR boundaries in the ship. Then again, there are enough doors with pressure leaks that we'd be screwed anyway.

By that, I mean spraying the hell out of a couple of ships with various forms of nastiness without informing the crew. This was also done over towns in CONUS.

The US used to be pretty close to the Big Brother entity everyone seems to think it is now.

Post by: Squash on June 22, 2013, 07:29:23 am: Alright Quackers, just had a 2 hour long Skype conversation with Qwerty, Papa, Urz, Brick, Gilder and Ofiach about Cesports. I'm not sure why I was invited, but I was. Literally 2 hours. Anyway, they 'threw away' the original and proceeding documents and rewrote the whole thing. So for two hours everyone talked, some talked more than others, and it was remade from the ground up. Urz, Papa and Qwerty made all the decisions, the rest of us mostly asked questions and offered input.

The result is a website that tracks the total accrued points for each Clan. These points will be gained from tournaments and similar events (like Cogs). In addition, the win/loss ratio and other fun stats of teams within the clan will be listed. Assumingly clans can use their points to compete with each other, but that's all completely unofficial. At the end of the 3 month season there will be an 'invitational', where the top 4 scoring teams are invited to play an exclusive tournament.

The system will also include scrimmage organisation so that clans can better coordinate casters and refs for friendly competitions. These scrimmages will not in any way contribute to the clan's point score on the website, not at all. They are purely for funsies, only tournaments and events (cogs) contribute to total point scores.

As you can tell the system changed a lot, I didn't have extensive input, and I certainly didn't push for the direction it's in now, but that's the way it is. I'm not disappointed, it's not a bad system at all, it's probably a really good idea right now. Having said that I don't see it affecting us at all, I don't think it'll change how we do things. As of right this minute I don't have any plans to actually participate us in the system, but if enough Ducks want to then we certainly will.

So yeah, that's that, any questions go ahead and ask. In the meantime we still have Cogs to get ready for. Quack Quack!

I'd also like to thank Sammy B.T. for being ready to sub in for Frogger (who was pretty much running around town to find a good internet connection, seriously), even though he didn't end up flying for us.

And of course, I'd like to congratulate and thank every other member of the team for doing so damn well. That goes out to Frogger, Keon, Charon, Shukketsushi, and Kubitsuri. This may not be the challenger's Cog yet, but it's a step towards it. Keep up the amazing work, everybody.

Not sure, but the casters tend to group us together more than they should. We are in the same clan, yes, but really we're three completely separate teams that practice together, help each other out, and share a pool of substitutes. The Paddling have their way of playing, we have our way of playing, and the Brood have theirs.

Anyways, congratulations to all Ducks who played today. My entire team did an amazing job, and I'm extremely grateful to Kuri no Hikari and Sammy B.T. for subbing on. I'd also like to give a shout out to not only the regular Paddling crew, but also to Nubs and Silverst, who played in Cogs for the first time and did so at a level worthy of the champion's cog. Exactly what I expected of them after all the times I've flown with them in the past.

We'll be seeing you all in the battle for the #1 spot next week, Paddling :D

We are completely against sitting on one end of the map and waiting for enemies to come (which, I'd like to note, The Paddling does less than people make it seem). We brawl. That's our style, which is completely separate from that of our sister teams. It really pains me to see you simply thinking of us as a Paddling clone. Like last season, when it was claimed that we were not known for bringing gunners. Fact: we brought a gunner on both ships in every match (with maybe one exception) in season one. We don't bring gunners anymore, but that's besides the point.

Midway through the BFS-Paddling match, Squash turned into a giant mallard and began knocking over buildings. He was too tall to see the enemy ships, though, so he only ran in the direction of the breadcrumbs, and luckily ended up trampling them, getting five kills in one minute. Then all the Ducks burst into song, forming a glorious harmony of quacking. The joint decision was then made to migrate to New Zealand to show those kiwi birds how it's done.

As I really like the game and want to stay around a little longer, I've decided to enter the clan scene to keep the game interesting.

As for myself: I feel comfortable with all roles the game has got to offer. If I had to name a preference I’d probably choose the pilot, as it syntheses the aspects guns of Icarus is all about: communication, strategy, tactics and a skilled handling of the equipment you’ve chosen. Still I like the more leisure life of a crewmember as well – it’s plain fun to turn ships into those of well-oiled killing machines every pilot wants to fly.

Though joining the Top Clan feels like to “settle down in a made nest” (german proverb), which kind of ruins the thrill of the chase, I nevertheless consider joining you guys. Mostly because you seem to be a bunch of highly skilled players who are likely able to still teach me a couple of tweaks. Also I’ve never seen any of you guys behaving like dicks and I repute the majority of your members to be rather communicative and even-tempered which I – unfortunately - can’t state for every competitive clan out there.

However there’s one thing holding me back from applying for a join right away. Your steam group consists of more than 90 players already, while you can only field 16 players in the cog matches with your two fleets. As I definitely want to actually participate in competitive matches and don’t want to end up as a bench warmer, it’s essential for me that I can expect to be fielded on a regular basis. Hence I’d like to know much large your ACTIVE player base actually is and if you provided some insights on your fielding policy, you would really help me to appraise whether I fit into your clan or not.

1. Every Duck is active. As anyone who's been a Duck more than a month can tell you, about 4 weeks ago (with plenty of warning) I went through our Steam group and removed anyone who was inactive, I gauged that by their Icarus activity in the last 2 weeks, as shown by their Steam profile. I looked at everyone's profiles and removed people. We have 91 people as of this moment, meaning 99 people have at some time been ducks. I believe that means of everyone that's ever become a Duck, almost 92% of them are still playing Guns of Icarus Online actively.

2. Active doesn't mean competitive. There's a line between casual play and competitively play, and most Ducks play casually, either because they can't play on tournament days due to their schedules, or they just don't have the interest.

3. We have three cogs teams right now, which means each week up to 24 Ducks will play in Cogs. That's right now. Until recently we also loaned Ducks to small clans who had trouble filling their numbers for Cogs, but due to recent rules changes we can't do that anymore, we're looking for alternatives. When we have enough interested, capable and dedicated Ducks to field a fourth team, we will start a fourth team. We don't keep people on the bench.

We are ducks. We say quack every time we get a kill. We also do pretty well in tournaments and stuff. We have 3 cogs teams, 90 or so members, pretty much all active. And if you want to join, I don't really know the procedure. PM squash or something.

The Raft gave an incredible challenge with some brilliant flying and shooting while the Brood really stepped up against a very talented challenger.

Wow, that's awesome (Formula 1 fan here)! I just wish the old Hockenheimring hadn't been torn down... That was one hell of a circuit, albeit not the most intricate (especially compared to the Nürburgring).

It was! You guys gave us a hell of a run. We were all nervous wrecks after the match. One of, if not the closest match we've had.

It's awesome knowing that every independent duck team is it's own force to be reckoned with. I worry every time we're set to go up against each other because I know if any team can do it, the duck teams can.

It did suck not being able to scrim with you guys for this week though, haha.

Also I just want to big farewell to Jace as he departs competitive play. It was awesome playing both with, and against you! We'll always have the labyrinth scrims where you rammed our spire to death repeatedly and without mercy - all day.

I hope you're still sticking around to play on occasion, losing the ability to scrim with you will certainly be a blow.

Yeah, that's felt really weird. No scrims and instantly hopping out of your teamspeak channel so it doesn't look like I'm eavesdropping. The segregation can now end! (At least for a week or so, then it'll be the Brood/Paddling separation)

I've retired from competitive captaining and I am taking over the organization of the duck reserves.

If you are a duck and are not currently on a cogs team you should be involved in the reserves!
The reserves will be the best place for new ducks, ducks looking to get on a competitive team, ducks that want to compete but aren't available during cogs time.

The most basic part of the reserve team is a database on everyones availability, skills, and contact info.

The duck reserves will potentially field their own team in non league games.

I think of you all as great friends and felt sad for your loss. In the end I know that's kind of silly, we're all still ducks. We go back and forth like this and that's part of what makes us great.

And so it is with the conclusion of the Cogs Season 2, and the end of a very intense few weeks, that Squash has officially retired as Mother Duck, leader of the Ducks.

This is an important and sad day because Squash is, in no small part, responsible for a significant amount of the ducks success as a clan, both competitively and generally. What started as 3 friends just trying to find a good crew-based, tactical ship combat game to play, has evolved into (one of) the biggest clans in the game, filled to the brim with awesome, good natured people and xemko (:P), with the best competitive spirit I’ve seen in just about any game, and boasting 3 separate competitive teams all with excellent players. There is a reason people tend to gravitate towards joining the ducks; it’s always been a safe, friendly, fun and welcoming environment for everyone because of the close-knit community we have been able to build for ourselves.

There’s no other clan I’d rather be a part of, and leading the impact that the ducks have had on Icarus is a fantastic accomplishment. We’ve influenced meta, been involved in and supported the community, and everyone knows who the ducks are, from competitive veterans, to random players in the Muse AmA asking ‘what’s with all the quacking?’

A lot of this would not have been possible without Squash at the figurative helm. The new leaders have big shoes to fill, but we have a good example to go by.

BTW, did I ever tell you how much of a diehard duck fanboy I am? I have over half of the players autographs from Raft and Brood, and some from Paddling as well :D. Also Keon is a fantastic CA and a very skilled player.

With the recent influx of new players from the most recent sale I just wanted to bump this thread and let newer players know of the amazing opportunities they can find in the ducks.

Hello newer players. If any of you are interested in joining a clan that is very centered on communication and teamwork, the Ducks may be for you. We have a long history of competitive excellence however we have long ago learned that dedicated work beats natural talent any day of the week. Therefore any skill level is fine if you have the mind to work to improve.

Joining the ducks is easy. First find a duck and follow that duck around until you meet more ducks. Develop friendships with those ducks. Then it is only a matter a time before you will be asked to join the ducks. Best way to find ducks is to look for lobbies called "Duck Ponds." These will pop up randomly generally in the American afternoon/evening. We also have public practice at 8PM EDT on Tuesdays and 10PM EDT on Thursdays.
