Since Adventure Mode seems to like having factions at the forefront, there is likely many times where you will be picking a side and sticking to it. (Unless youre me and want Anvala independent forever.) Pick your side!

Whichever faction is the most dapper and gentlemanly really. Hard to say with such limited information though. I like the sound of the Anglean Republic, and the Order of Chaladon looks like it might be vaguely British inspired from the small amount of concept art ive seen on them. So probably one of the two.

Considering the Anglean Republic sounds vaguely like Anglican (the Church of England) and that they are situated on a North Western Island, I am going to side with them if only because I am a bit of an Anglophile at heart. This is all subject to change as more information on the factions gets released.

A place that's not snowy/cold or a barren wasteland. Any place that has vegetation and animals, and where the temperature never gets cold. If another place has some cool looking hats, I'll consider that too :)

I was under the impression that the baronies would be the central area.
all the factions fighting for the traderoutes and resources something like that.
I really want to be a traveling outsider merchant, dealing in black market and illegal parts. But lets see what the implement :)

Northern Air Fleet is based in the Baronies. Our allegiance to them is only based on our location atm. However mercenaries can change heart if our interests are not met.

Sadly, Anvala, where my lovely RP saloon is located, isn't part of the Baronies. Nonetheless, I'll be joining the Baronies solely for the proximity to Anvala.

I'm pretty sure at least 2/3 of the playerbase is going to respond to faction-based gameplay with 'but I want to be a freelance ninja-merchant-pirate with no allegiance and do I have to join a faction GOD MOM stop telling me what to DO.'
As for me, whichever one most promotes the exploding of other ships.

Hey all I haven't really been following the adventure mode discussion but have muse offered any outline of the faction mechanics?
I realize this might be off thread.

I figured it out, I won't care what I affect as long as it means I can stay flying, then at some point I'll realize all the negative things I've indirectly caused and try to redeem myself, by righting the wrongs and killing pirates, until I die or something

The Yesha Empire
Capital:Chang-Ning

Inspired by Oriental/Asian culture
They reside in the western area of the world.
Designed the Galleon and the most likely the Goldfish. Also worth to mention that he Pyramideon is a modified version of a Yesha warship.
The Anglean Republic

Kinforth can be seen above. This faction resides in the cold north of Angela and Firnfield. They where previously mentioned to be some kind of pirates or vikings, but they're still supposed to be a full-grown faction and rather different from the regular pirates you'd find.
The Fjord Baronies
Inspired by Nordic and medieval culture, which gives their clothing a lot of fur, capes and braids

Resides in and around the Fjords and "Eastern Ridge" to the east of The Burren.
Sadly I didn't find any remaining picture of their ships, but their initial concept was quite interesting. Instead of having one or two big balloons they had a cluster of smaller balloons, either round or squareish.
The Arashi League
Not much info to go on this faction. They reside in the southwestern areas, wich seem to be mostly desert. I would guess their quite a "rag tag" faction.

It's a bit different from our first guesses about a year ago, when the only thing we knew was that Jess told us the Republic might be vikings
Empire = ww2 germany/1800 Great Brittain. Cool uniforms. Also with a single leader.
Republic = More democratic faction. But kinda big as the Empire.
Baronies = Rich wealthy. A couple of rich barons who rule instead of a political leader.
League = Sounds like pirates
Order = An order with strong rules and such. Maybe religion? Like "The templar order".
Guild = Merchants
and Racercowans design ideas about it
Going by Sgt_Spoon's guess, this might be what they look like:
Empire = Ships with sharp features, rather monotone dull faded colors. Imposing, somewhat like modern structure (especially WWII era). Maybe lots of machinery.
Republic = Still sharp features, but more action-hero sharp than evil sharp (bold might be a better term). Colors more based on contrast, and machinery is hidden away within the innards (aesthetically, at least. No problem with the balloon and hull repair points being above deck)
Baronies = Smooth, well decorated. Useless/showy features (like gold railings, maybe). Ship design is less sharp and more sweeping. White/Gold/Royal Purple color theme. Also, windows. Lots of them, wherever it's not a BIG liability.
League = More boat-ish, and/or cannibalised/reused version of other faction's ships.
Order (1) = Very sterile ships. White. Functional. (based off strict part)
Order (2) = Old-ish ships. Somewhat peculiar design features, and built to last a thousand years. (based off religious part. Because what good is a fictional religion that doesn't love old stuff?)
Guild = Ships are more pieced together, home-made rather than manufactured. Also more bulky (freight) than ther factions.
Course, I couldn't illustrate any of these since I have horrible drawing, but these are aesthetic Ideas for way off when/if faction-specific designs are used. Assuming Sgt_Spoon is somewhere in the vicinity of the faction's themes.
..I guess we had the league right at least

I like this idea of a confuscian empire, it harkens back to the old Imperial Chinese meritocracy.
The republic being Vikings with slaves likely means thralls, people captured in raids along with supplies. I also like the fact that their symbol is the albatross. I can see this being diametrically opposed to the league who seem more for rugged individualism. Good ole crane of the wastes, the vulture.
Pretty happy that my gut told me to choose the league, Definately sticking with that decision.

I doubt it. The Arashi is far from the only scavengers in the world, and their style is quite different from that of the junkers.
Their ships seems to be pointier, ruggier and more enforcing like the Min here:

I think i'll fight for the Anglean Republic. I love snow and would love to spend my time in a winter wonderland. Further, it's a corner and I love corners.

Really? I'll have to check that out when I get to a computer, cause it's always been labeled as an Arashi ship where I've seen it. Could be wrong though

Arashi is the name of a ramen place by where I leave, so I'll probably go there. Just like how I choose Gonzaga to win the bracket because their name has a 'z' in it.

For now I'd play as a free agent, mostly because I see things getting messy- Most factions want land in one form or another, although I imagine that Chaladon will be quite isolationist, or will try to expand to the south. There's economic tension between the Guild and Empire, who run competing trade routes. Arashi will feed off them as they fly through their lands, being raided left right and center. I think the Baronies and the Angleans wlll duke it out for Anvala, but as the Yeshans cross the wastes they'll be forced to face them together or be wiped out. In a lore perspective, I imagine that's the relationship between the factions.
Currently, I'll go Baronies, as they're gonna see a lot of action.

The Asahi ship appears to be based on the lines of an Arab dhow. The dorsal sail echoes the lines of a lateen sail, and the clutter of rigging against the balloon has a tent-like appearance hinting of Bedouin inspirations.

The Junker is clearly inspired by the flat-bottomed Chinese sailing junk. Although the cloud-cutter bow appears Venetian.

Yup.. I now realise I'm repeating an error that's already been corrected. Still looks like a dhow.

is ok i still love you, and yeah it looks pretty Arabic, but the Arashi League was described in the first bi-weekly video on the kickstarter as being a "cultural mix from across western Europe" so their ships will in all likelyhood not be Arabic in design. in the press pack there is no pictures of Arashi ships, so we will just have to wait and see until some concept art gets released. But, from details in their clothing and skirmish mode maps such as battle on the dunes, we can infer that their ships will probably be rugged and aged industrial feeling, pieced together from scraps salvaged from the old battle ships dotting the landscape. i would assume very little wood would be on them as that would be hard to come by in the desert. probably rusty and with large-ish balloons (due to the lack of light weight materials such as wood), definitely designed for war as their primary function, as they are constantly at war with the Mercantile Guild as well as having conflict with the Yesha Empire over water reserves to the west (as i read in a description of King of the Flayed hills somewhere, might have been in the very out of date gameplay section of the main site, but i dont see why setting for that map would have changed).

It was mis-labeled, and that shot has been removed from the press kit. Thanks for bringing it up. It was another Pyramidion concept, not faction-oriented.
Some of the current ships have faction style influences, but none of them is really full-on faction design. Think of the current ship roster as belonging to the Burren and the unaffiliated neutral territories between the factions. A hull shape here or a bit of decoration there might recall the style of one part of the world or another, but for the most part these are hodgepodge merc ships. Same goes for a lot of the current costumes, although some of the ones that we showed on the Kickstarter have clearer faction leanings than others.
Expect to see more strongly faction-identified stuff rolling out in the future. We'll also try to show a little more of the faction style to give you guys a better feel for what each one's about. Stay tuned!

Serbia's just south-west of Romania. I find it closer to the Guild than the League.

Im pretty sure I will stay with my gut choice with the Arashi. There is a lot I like about a culturally diverse people who live in a hard land and have the sense of humor to adopt a giant scavenger bird as their symbol.
I like the Arashi and the Angleans too much, so I'll prolly go with an Anglean who rolls with the Arashi.

-Dont know , since they are merchants , -*if they make the outfits as in the SKM picture, thenthey look horrible
they dont have useful special weapons, maybe they look more like the raiders in fallout , then sky pirates

I believe that they said that the guild was a mix of Japanese and eastern European influences, but I'm wondering about what era they will draw from? Will we see kermlin towers on the ships? (Please yes!)

Even though they do take shots at each other, and despite their individualistic nature, the fact that the League even exists indicates that they've got baller status diplomats.

I don't think it's diplomats keeping the Arashi alive I think it's their fierce dedication to keeping everyone else out. They squabble with eachother but if an outside force comes in they gang up on that outside force and make it pay. Then they go back to squabbling with eachother.

Exactly, considering that they are a scavenging nation squabbles could potentially arise from disputes over old tech? (I'm going to blatantly rip off the Mortal Engines series and call it that :D) Like if one town discovered a good haul of old weapons but it was technically in the neighbouring towns territory? Perhaps there'd be some kind of system for dealing with this kind of thing, a scavengers guild or such? But then their greater concern is other nations/raiders intruding and stealing old-tech, some places might be restricted due to dangerous things within but the bold pirates think they're hiding sky whales and go for a gander?
Personally I'm siding with the Arashi, I just like the idea of cobbling together some dodgy weapon out of scrap and accidentally blowing my own ship up with it :)

Definitely the Chaladonian Order! They remind me of England in the time that Britannia ruled the waves. Here's hoping their armada will be equally impressive.

I'm waiting for more info on the Anglean republic since it's got my attention, but if I don't like it, I have absolutely no idea what to pick. All factions look interesting. Squid is my favorite ship so maybe Chaladon, but yeah, no idea.

The Mercantile Guild. The bloodied coin fetches the biggest quantities of anything you pay for, and I only work when there's good profit and an easy way out.
Maybe the Arashi. They're like the Anti Traction League in Mortal Engines. They are probably based off of them.

It's funny, I've always planned joining Anglea ever since it was announced that the Empire wouldn't be WW-germany/victorian Britain I'd hoped for. But I also always thought it'd be one of the least populated factions. Seems like we're winning :P

Necro, as a reference to Necromancy. Necro is a popular term of Forums for when someone posts on a thread that has been dead fir awhile, which bumps it back to the top of it's section, almost as if it was revived. In this case, you revived something that literally hasn't had a post in a whole year.

I am not a fan of calling people out on contributing to old threads. It makes new community members feel outcast because they were not around when the topic was first being discussed. If a topic was worth talking about back then it is worth taking about now.

I'm with Hamster on this.
Necro threads are actually widely encouraged by many forums rules, it is better to "necro" a thread than to post a new thread of the same topic, thus clogging up forums un-necessarily. Unless of course the "necro" was done in a trolling fashion. (Rarely seen in guns community.)

Yeah, a good topic to bring back I'd say. Anyways my old vote for The Order of Chaladon still stands, it's either that or I follow the rest of the Cakes depending on how clans factor into things, whether you can join a faction and still be in a clan with people who are aligned with, say, the guild.

In the empire, you are rewarded for every kill. I personally prefer a bag of gold coins over a bloody carcass to drag about.

Not a carcass, a trophy. I keep a piece of the figure head from ever ship I drop. That's not to mention that the coin i make from selling the cargo is triple what the Yesha pay .

They both come from the cold inhospitable areas, they have a penchant for furs and massive upper body strength. Muse needs to make a theme with shields hanging off the side of the airship and the look will be complete

Probably the Anglean Republic for me
They seem like the tough, scrapyard miracle makers that pull through due to sheer knowledge of advanced technology.
They are motivated by the pursuit of understanding and not even the coldest, harshest barren wastelands will stop their curiosity.
Not only that but living in such conditions make their culture based on being crafty, resourceful, and adaptive.
They are resilient engineers/archeologists/scientists.
What they lack in natural talent, discipline, and tactics they make up for in being cold and calculating (literally).

Personally (this is just my imagination not actual lore.) I see the Mercantile Guild being something closer to a Mafia.. Traders, craftsman and businessmen all in the interest of earning money, but if push comes to shove they're ready with a small army and the money to fund it. :)

Hmm, well, my current getup for the most part is a rustic/bronze color scheme (hence my name), but I might make an effort to adorn something in those colors (though I'l have to check if I have those dyes in my inventory first).
I too was thinking of them as a Mafia actually (the co-op trailer got me thinking that), seeing as how they've got the firearms and wealth to pull it off.
What we really need for the game are pins (one for each faction, with the faction's colors and logo), so we can briefly distinguish someone from a faction (same goes for faction decals on airships).

Definitely Anglea, they kinda remind me of viking/russo raiders. Not much hospitable land to grow crops or raise cattle but highly defensible which would make it more appealing to steal from neighbors. That and their high technology vaults with all those advanced steam goodies.

Which adds up to cool concepts like... the spire :D
The spire is actualy half a flying watch/gun|tower that was meant to guard areas, alot like... well guards just in airship sizes.
There should be more things you can look into with the baronies that i cant remember, but thats why I like them when comparing/looking at the factions.

Baronies, closest to Finnish ancestors land and the thought of banshees echoing throughout the fjords is beautiful. Nothing like having a nice little factory out on the ice either; process me some tar, sell me some tar, drown me some disobedient workers in the tar, everybody wins.
Iced over spires would be beautiful icicles (noisily struggling to stay aloft), can see my workers now :') changing that "1 day since last accident" sign back to "0 days since last accident" so proud of those little hairy men. Just sit in my mountain/factory complex and smoke cigars while listening to Lzzy Hale on a phonograph by the fire, signing bills of sale and planning how to steal back what I just sold.
Starting to think I'm a bad boss tbh, gota do what you gota do to keep that sweet black goo flowing.

I wont choose a faction, I havent bought the expansion and I dont want anything to do with it. I find it rude that its forced up on the people who choose not to purchase the expansion. I got GoIo to play a teamwork game, not play around with e-politics. I will be back when i'm allowed to play the game i bought without having an expansion force-fed to me.

I'm going for the Arashi League at the moment.
There's just something badass about a people who are fiercely individualistic to the point they not only accept living in a desert wasteland but make it their home, their realm of death even. This sort of faction is endearing to me because it's very much a tale of a society that refuses to accept the easy answer. They won't convert to the Yasha Empire and bow to their leaders and oppressors for the promise of food in return for their loyalty and individuality. They won't sell their people to the Mercantile Guild for the chance of a fat gilded life. They are a strong people, tempered by fire and the desert sun to make the best of what little they are given. It's really a sort of life choice I can get behind, the kind where you find comfort and happiness even with the fewest of luxuries.
My second option would be the Yesha Empire
While basically stripping away individuality for a sort of "Cog In The Machine" or as the lore says, "Place in Society", this sort of thinking has made quite the impressive empire with its own culture, large cities, pretty wealthy from what I can tell, and they don't struggle to have food and shelter provided. It is a nice thought, coming home from a long day of war and being able to see the grand cities and hard working people you're fighting for, as opposed to the Arashi who are a divided people when not doing the League's work, and live in far less luxury. Also helps that I like Eastern architecture with the fancy roofs and the whole "honor" system from Chinese and Japanese tradition.
I may get some ideas and lore points wrong so forgive me and feel free to correct some things.
