Title: Factions? in relation to the game

So I've seen a lot of "which faction will you choose" and all this lore about the game, however as a new player playing the game for a while now I don't understand where it all fits into place.

Why do people bang on about factions if they are not in the game?
Is there going to be an adventure mode update or something?

I would love to see these things happen but at the moment I'm confused and just need clarification.

Factions will also play a more prominent part in the upcoming coop mode =)

Thanks for the info. guys, I do enjoy the lore I just didn't know how it tied in with the current game.
One more thing.
Will the coop and the adventure mode be a big update, or a different game?

Coop and AM will be added as DLC afaik

There has been no info released on the price of the DLC, other than it will cost more than its' current preorder price of $10.
