Title: Sky League Tipping Thread
Post by: redria on March 20, 2014, 12:56:25 pm
Similar to the Flotsam Dynasty Campaign (https://gunsoficarus.com/community/forum/index.php/topic,2141.0.html) and Cogs, we posted Tipping here for the Sky League Tournament.

For each match, we predicted the winner and the score. One point was be awarded for correctly guessing the winner of a match (regardless of who the loser was), plus 0.1 points for the correct score (if both winner and loser were correct).

The winner (N-Sunderland) was awarded a costume of their choice from the store.

Tipping ran on a week-by-week basis.

Yes, I love me some baseless speculating! Let me get to it!

The maps are here btw
http://pastebin.com/v4cm4NAr

The 3 match is the 1 seed for the bracket and the 5 match is the 2 seed.

A1 Paritan Rumble
A2 Duel at Dawn
A3 Northern Fjords
A4 Canyon Ambush
A5 Battle on the Dunes

A1 ZMM beats FTK 5-3
A2 Holy beats SSnt 5-2
A3 ZMM beats Holy 5-2
A4 FTK beats SSnt 5-0
A5 FTK beats Holy 5-4

You have to give props to the Merry Men, they are one of the oldest teams in this scene and have conistently made a name for themselves as skilled players. Also as I've never seen the Sentinel bros and see they appear low level I have them beaten out quite handily but that is quite speculative. Both Holy and FTK are a bit of an unknown for me but I know their leaders are experienced players and I am sure their teams reflect that.

Onto bracket B

B1 Duel at Dawn
B2 Battle on the Dunes
B3 Paritan Rumble
B4 Canyon Ambush
B5 Northern Fjords

B1 SAC beats SIR 5-4
B2 CSR beats OVW 5-3
B3 CSR beats SAC 5-3
B4 OVW beats SIR 5-3
B5 OVW beats SAC 5-3

This is probably the most balanced of the brackets and therefore could really go anyway. While SIR is a very skilled clan I've just not seen them as a full clan terribly often recently in the competitive scene. However they boast very skilled players and of late they've been doing due dilegence of practicing. However Tropo has really been buckling down on SAC and getting them extremely competitive and with their match being on Duel at Dawn, it will be scrappy and messy, something that probably favors SAC.

On the other side we have OVW facing off against CSR. These are two powerhouses. OVW has developed an impressive aggressive disable play style that helps break coordinated teams. They're unconcvential but effective, showing that Pyras and Squid definitely still have a strong presence in competitive. They can also bring a Galleon with some effectiveness. However I have to give the edge to CSR because those guys are just crazy talented. They specialize in countering their opponents builds, out brawling or out sniping depending on the map and opponent.

I have to then give the next win to CSR over SAC. Paritan Rumble will be Lueosi's playground and while it will be an awesome game, CSR will probably come out on top

I have OVW beating SIR for the same reasons I listed for the SAC/SIR game, SIR may be out of practice which is a dang shame that this had to be bumped to single elimination.

Finally OVW vs SAC on Northern Fjords. While both are great teams, I think OVW will have an advantage with the spacious area of Northern Fjords that will remove some of the scrappyiness factor of SAC.

Regardless, the first week will be awesome!

Edit: Gonna have a go at explaining my speculation, like Sammy did with his bets.

A1: Merry Men def. Fancy Teamkillers 5-0
A2: Holy Celestium def. Serra's Sentinals 5-2
A3: Merry Men def. Holy Celestium 5-3
A4: Fancy Teamkillers def. Serra's Sentinals 5-4
A5: Holy Celestium def. Fancy Teamkillers 5-4

A1. Teamkillers to me are a complete unknown and as with Sammy, I rate the MerryMen as one of the best in the business. (They were excellent opponents and great sportsmen in the Flotsam Dynasty campaign.) I know on the day, things can and do happen. Hell, Overwatch surprised everyone in the Flotsam so maybe TK will here but, I'm calling this as a MM shutout.

A2. This is going to be interesting and could go either way but I'm giving this one to Celestium. The sentinels will prove tough opponents but Thomas knows the game very well and I am sure has imparted his wisdom to his team.

A3. For all I've hedged my bets on above, I['m giving this to Zill's team for the reason listed in A1. Unlike A1 though, I don't see this as being a shutout.

A4/A5. If these do turn out to be the matches, they will be very close. I flipped a coin to call who would win and who would lose. All told, this will be a good group to watch just to see how the newer clans work out.

On to group B. In soccer (football for us Euros) this would be referred to as a group of death. Any team on their day at their best could win this.

B1: Sky Invading Rhinos def. Sacrilege 3-2 (After 10 minutes overtime)
B2: Overwatch def. Crimson Sky Riders 5-4
B3: Overwatch def. Sky Invading Rhinos 5-3
B4: Crimson Sky Riders def. Sacrilege 5-3
B5: Crimson Sky Riders def. Sky Invading Rhinos 5-4

B1. I see this being a sniping match showing off some of the more interesting facets of the tactics available in this game. Although I think it will be sniping that doesn't mean I think it will be boring. SIR may not have been around much recently but it does contain some amazing players. SAC are consistent and have some of the best in the game playing for them. It's going to be tight, expect fireworks.

B2. First things first, CSR are an amazing group and have shown consistently that they know how  to fly, they know how to counter but most of all that they know how to adapt. This will be a very exciting match but I have to give it to my guys and gals but only just mind you.

B3. Should Sir beat SAC and OVW beat CSR then match three should be a classic. Both teams will know exactly what is on the line and will fight tooth and nail to get through as the number one seed. Again, this will be a close one but I think OVW will take this, especially given recent experience gained vs the Ducks. Overwatch are on the rise again and if they bring their A game they are going to be tough to beat.

B4. I've given this to CSR based on track record. SAC sure has hell wont go down without a fight but I don't think they'll be able to beat CSR for the reasons mentioned above.

B5. Tough call this one but again, CSR are an incredibly strong team. I would be highly surprised if they did not make it through this first stage to the Tournament proper.

xD I feel a little hurt at these predictions.

<3

I have to give Merry Men an edge in most matchups, and as a Ryder, I have to give Lochnagar's FTK a leg up based on association with CsR. I don't think I've seen either Holy (full team in competition) or the Sentinals (at all) before, so benefit of the doubt goes to the teams I know better. :)

Group B is a tough one. I have B1 going into overtime finish because... Well, I'm not sure. And Duel at Dawn makes it even less likely. But oh well.
OVW and CsR... I don't see CsR missing out on the rest of the tournament, so one of the B seeds had to go to them somehow. Battle on the Dunes will be an interesting battle. I am interested to see how it turns out. But I don't want to have to beat both SIR and SAC to get through the group stage, so I'm giving the win to OVW. ^.^

Thomas, I'm excited to see you guys in competition. I hope you make it through so I get to fight against you too. >:)

-edit-
FYI for anyone newer, you don't have to explain your choices. Just seems fun if you are interested. ^.^

Totally agree with redrias Explanation for Bracket A.

Bracket B however is kinda hard.
Havent seen SIR or SAC to active in the recent tournaments so i kinda have to guess a bid more than i would want.
I give it to SIR cause i think they are generally more practised atm.
CsRy vs OVW is a hard one.
Havent seen OVW to often atm but i still think they are practised enough to give CsRy a hard challenge.
I still tend to the ryders for the win.
On paritan i think ryders will have a harder time but i still think they get the win.
OVW has the edge over SAC i think. They wont get a clean sweap imo but they get a relative decisive win.
OVW vs SIR is a similiar story but SIR will make it harder for OVW i think.

A1: MM def. Teamkillers 5-4
A2: Holy def. Serra's Sentinels 5-0
A3: MM def. Holy 5-2
A4: Teamkillers def. Serra's Sentinels 5-0
A5: Teamkillers def. Holy 5-1

MM's experience will get them the first seed, but Fancy Teamkillers seem like they have a lot of potential, and will give them a run for their money. I expect Holy Celestium to be pretty solid, but it won't quite be enough to progress. When they face Fancy Teamkillers on Dunes we might see a brawl build vs. a sniper build (just a guess), which won't end very well for them. And Serra's Sentinels probably won't pull off anything spectacular, since they appear to be pretty green and are facing some strong opponents.

B1: SIR def. SAC 5-2
B2: CSR def. OVW 5-0
B3: CSR def. SIR 5-2
B4: OVW def. SAC 5-0
B5: OVW def. SIR 5-3

SIR may be a bit rusty, but Wundsalz and Phelan are great with close range Pyras and should be able to pull it off on Duel at Dawn against SAC. Next, I think that CSR will take double Mobulas against Overwatch. I think that OVW is one of the best teams out there, but it's almost impossible to counter that double Mob on Dunes. After that, CSR should be able to overcome SIR, with one point in their favour being that they've competed a whole lot more lately. OVW can likely beat SAC (SAC is good, but I rate OVW very highly when they're at their best), and they will probably also take down SIR (could be a close match though).

first mentioned team will have their score posted first.
example: Fancy Teamkillers vs Merry Men - 2-5 means mm wins with 5 kills over temkillers 2.

Bracket A:
-Match 1: Fancy Teamkillers vs Merry Men - 2-5
-Match 2: Holy Celestium vs Serra's Sentinals - 5-0
-Match 3: MM vs holy - 5-2
-Match 4: teamkillers vs serras sentinels - 5-0
-Match 5: holy vs teamkillers - 5-3

match 1:
Merry men is a powerhouse, they have grade A teamwork. They know that patience is a virtue and that mistakes comes from being too bold. They have a wide variety of setups that will annoy and dominate other teams, so edge to MM in this game
The fancy teamkillers I know nothing of other than its Rydr who have put together a second team. This have the potential to have the newcomer potential, but in this match experience means more than the general skill of each individual of the team. If teamkillers can work out grade A teamwork before the matches, they might have a chance.

match 2:
Holy celestium is led by Thomas a higher experienced pilot and leader, they have the newcomer potential, but they also need to work on communication. From what I have seen ingame so far I know that they have been working with advanced flanking maneuvres and focus fire, but I have also seen severe miscommunications that have led to bad engagements. They have been practicing more and more this month and I believe they have the edge since they have the greater experience.
serras sentinels I know nothing about, so saying something that I know nothing off would be a waste of time, they can only surprize me and I would love to be proven wrong and see a newcomer potential.

match 3:
mm wins witht heir superior experience. What I have seen from Zill and Socks these past months I have to give them the win of the entire bracket. They have really moved from less activity to becoming active and really awesome.

match 4:
Teamkillers win due to their skill level being higher. (atleast I think so)

match 5:
Holy wins and here is why. Teamkillers consists of good good players, but they are also a very new team. I have only seen the pilots play with the pilots from CsRy and I believe that Holy has the bigger advantage in that they have had longer time to prepare. Mark my words though it will be a close game as it is on dunes.

Bracket B:
-Match 1: Sky Invading Rhinos vs Sacrilege- 2-5
-Match 2: Crimson Sky Riders vs Overwatch- 3-5
-Match 3: overwatch vs sacrilege- 5-2
-Match 4: rhinos vs CsRy- 2-5
-Match 5: sac vs CsRy- 3-5

match 1:
Sacrilege have been practicing harder and harder, they have started to become a competitive entity and about a month from now they will be one of the teams you will fear having being put into your bracket. Rhinos have been doing collaboration teams these past weeks, although wundzals is a great leader and crew controller I fear that SAC's practice with their teammembers will prevail, and thus they will take the match.

match 2:
Overwatch will take this one. Overwatch have been playing for a long long time and they are pros. So far I have seen CsRy do some amazing bait and switch work, however this is battle on the dunes and its going to be hard for them to do advanced flanking and tricking overwatch.
Hillerton of CsRy also have a severe disadvantage at this point, lueosi have been missing for a few days and we are all a bit worried if something happened to him. But this is the truth though and Hillerton have had to take decisions based on the team and train up a new pilot to play alongside him.

match 3:
paritan rumble! overwatch have shown their superior strategies on this map several times. They are insanely mobile and will break into any sniping or attempt to play a medium range fight. SAC however have very skilled gunners who will be their best bet at winning this match. The key will be to stay mobile and get the first engagement in the lower parts of the map, however I still believe that overwatch have the more experienced in this map.

match 4:
canyon ambush, this is hillertons playground. although Lueosi is missing this is where CsRy is at home where they can flank and trick the enemy team. Rhinos will have some serious challenges and they have to position themselves perfectly if they want to avoid being pincher maneuvred. also being agressive vs CsRy usually ahve the unfortunate outcome that the attacking team gets focus fired down very quickly.

match 5:
fjords is the thralls favorite map, there are so many possibilities of flanking through clouds and so on. however to talk about the 2 teams meeting here! CsRy knows that controlling the archway is key to deciding where the enemy have to go. this might turn into a trenchwar medium range map and this is where the double pyras that CsRy is superior to high hanging junkers or galleons, the ability to switch from sniping to brawl will come in handy. SAC will probaly run their galleon + pyramidion, however the problem with running galleon is the low trenches in the fjords, so breaking enemy balloon with lumberjack more than often results in the enemy just ducking into cover.

this is a possible way that this could end up going, I'm looking forward to seeing which one of us have the best guess on this.

Nope! I just knew there was a tipping thread for the Flotsam Dynasty, and now that I'm active on the forums I wanted to participate in one. But there wasn't one. So I made it.  8)

But is that a thing? Should I find someone from Muse to ask about it?

This is nice. I'm fairly new so i never saw this :P
There's a couple points that Skrim said and people should have in consideration when "tipping":
- Fancy Teamkillers is in fact Crimson's Sky Ryder second team, and they train a lot as well;
- Unfortunately our top pilot, Lueosi, is missing. We haven't had contact from him for about a week and we're worried :(
But we're still confident and we started practicing with a new pilot :)

Well, considering various things i also made my guess:

Bracket A:
-Match 1: Fancy Teamkillers vs Merry Men = 5-4 on Paritan Rumble
-Match 2: Holy Celestium vs Serra's Sentinals= 5-0 on Duel at Dawn
-Match 3: Fancy Teamkillers vs Holy Celestium = 5-4 on Northern Fjords
-Match 4: Merry Men vs Serra's Sentinals = 5-0 on Canyon Ambush
-Match 5: Holy Celestium vs Merry Men = 2-5 on Battle on the Dunes

Bracket B:
-Match 1: Sky Invading Rhinos vs Sacrilege = 5-2 on Duel At Dawn
-Match 2: Crimson Sky Riders vs Overwatch = 5-4 on Battle on the Dunes

-Match 4: Sacrilege VS Overwatch = 2-5 on Canyon Ambush
-Match 5: Sky Invading Rhinos vs Overwatch = 4-5 on Northern Fjords

Bracket A: I fell a bit sad by the fact i'm not really giving credit to Holy, they're in fact training hard and they actually have potencial

Match 1:  Merry man is very good, its going to be hard for FTK, but i'm sure they'll do their best
Match 2: Holy will come out on top. I don't know Sierra's and actually never saw or played  with a member.
  Match 3: Its not like i'm going to say Holy is going to win against my friends :P But i still feel like giving credit to them;
Match 4: For reasons previously mentioned
  Match 5: Thought one. I do believe Merry Men has the experience required, so they'll will get this one;

Bracket B: Thought one. I love the clans here and i would hate to see them out of the League  <3

Match 1: Both teams are very good at brawling, but in this one i'll give the upper hand to SIR.
Match 2: OVW is practicing a lot lately, but so are we :P  Although our top pilot is missing, we'll definitely put a fight and come out on top. I do believe so:)
Match 3: SIR... Though job that one will be.
Match 4: Need to support OVW on that one. <3
Match 5: I wouldn't like to see SIR out of this, but i have to take a guess :(

Have fun everyone o/

I felt like updating this from boredom. Since it's about 5 AM, you should probably double check my math. It's actually kind of interesting seeing how getting one early match wrong can make everything that follows wrong. I didn't add in a 0.1 if you got the score right, but picked the wrong winners.

Results:

A1: MM wins against FTK 5-4
A2: Holy wins against Serra 0-0
A3: Holy wins against MM 5-0
A4: FTK wins against Serra 0-0
A5: FTK wins against MM 5-0

B1: SIR wins against SAC 5-2
B2: CSR wins against OVW 5-4
B3: CSR wins against SIR 5-3
B4: OVW wins against SAC 5-3
B5: OVW wins against SIR 5-1

Points:

Mr. Ace Rimmer - 4
Alistair MacBain - 8.2
Thomas - 5
N-Sunderland - 8.2
Skrimskraw - 3
Allien'- 6.3
Captain Smollett - 6.2
Levi Mann - 3

Comments:

Really interesting. Almost everyone bet the same way for Group A, and no one got it  completely correct. Although I came pretty darn close. Kinda. I did drop the ball quite hard for B though. There was actually a few people that it got all of B correct, and kudos to them, especially Alistair and Sunderland for getting some scores spot on, although Alien' got the most correct score predictions.

I do think Levi got some of his matches mixed up. It's supposed to be winners in match three, and losers (I don't want to call them that, but they did lose their first match) in match 4. According to his predictions, he swapped 3 and 4. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and gave him a point for predicting correctly, even though it was in the wrong place, only to find that in the next group he still had them flipped, but would have been correct. So flip 'em or don't flip 'em, he still got that point.

Really looking forward to next weekend, I'll have to a better job of guessing. xD

Got the same result Thomas. Seems time doesnt affect you to hard in your math ^^.

Redria - 4
Sammy B. T. - 4
Mr. Ace Rimmer - 4
Alistair MacBain - 8.2
Thomas - 5
N-Sunderland - 8.2
Skrimskraw - 3
Allien' - 6.3
Captain Smollet - 6.2
Levi Mann - 3

And yes its really interesting how a wrong match in the earlier matches affects the rest of the bracket.
I think Thomas was the only one with the correct winner of A3. Lets see how the future groups affect this scoring.

Back when we did the Flotsam tipping thread we made it so that getting the winner of a match correct was all you needed, so getting a match wrong early on didn't destroy your score. But I'm not going to complain about that seeing as tied for the lead anyways :P

Close guys, but not quite. Let me share 2 posts from the Flotsam Dynasty, and if everyone disagrees, we can switch back.
N-Sunderland asking about whether you get a point for correctly guessing a winner, or only for guessing both winner and loser (https://gunsoficarus.com/community/forum/index.php/topic,2141.msg37316.html#msg37316)
Captain Smollet saying no double jeopardy: Points are awarded for guessing the winner (https://gunsoficarus.com/community/forum/index.php/topic,2141.msg37357.html#msg37357)
With this in mind, As long as your pick was the winner, the team they beat doesn't matter. I will have the OP updated with this note along with all the new fun stuff.

Hmm... Can we get a 0.1 point bonus if we correctly call a no-show? For example "Holy def. Serra (no-show)" would basically be the equivalent of predicting the score.
Title: Re: Sky League Tipping Thread
Post by: redria on March 23, 2014, 09:48:41 am
My triple post got sniped out by Sunderland. Aw.
If you predict a no-show/forfeit, your predicted score would be 0-0. Similar to how me and Ace predicted an overtime victory (dumb) by having our scores cap out at 3-2. Since the score would technically be 0-0, you would be given the 0.1 bonus. :) So yes, but do it by giving a score, not by guessing no show. Because as I heard it, SS was around, but only had 1 ship, so forfeited. If someone had guessed no-show, and I had confirmation that that was the case, I would (probably) not give the bonus (no-show =/= forfeit).  :P

Note for this round - There are a lot of new teams with no clan tag yet, and several clans with multiple teams. I made up tags as I went. Long story short, sorry Clamour.  :o

Pretty much a total guessing for the newer teams.
The first two brackets had clear favorites for me and the teams in there are well known. You know their strengths and weaknesses.
A newcomer vs newcomer game is a total guess cause you barely know anything from them.

Group C:

GwTh are really great at what they do, so I expect them to take this group fairly easily. If we see a Spire then a couple of kills could be landed on them. I haven't been all that impressed with what I've seen of IRIS or TAW, so I could see The Clamour taking the second seed despite being a recently formed team.

Group D:

The newcomers probably won't be causing any massive upsets or anything, and the rest is mostly guesswork. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a forfeit from one of the teams, and I'm putting my money on Phalanx for that.

Group E:

A bit tougher. Hatters have a solid Gents roster, so dealing with Cupcake Bandits shouldn't be an issue. BFS will likely also win their match, but they have some Russians as opposition, and we all know how tough those guys can get. Next up Gents will beat the Hatters because they're usually the better team, but also because Hatters have had to replace both their captains. I'm sure they have two fantastic replacements ready, but having lots of experience flying with your teammate is possibly the most important requirement for success in competitive GoIO. Next up Gents will beat BFS because mid/long-range>mines, especially on Fjords. Next up the VOLW will beat Cupcake Bandits... Because Russians I guess. I recognize at least one name on their team, which is more than I can say for their opponents. That won't be enough against Hatters though, who as I said have a bunch of great Gents on their team. Finally BFS can probably pull a victory out against Hatters, who once again have two captains who almost certainly haven't gotten as much time flying together as Brick and Gilder.

Interestingly I was telling my team all week that Serra's Sentinels probably wouldn't show up. If only I put my money where my mouth was.

Although technically they did show, they just didn't have enough people..

Group C

Match 1 - GwTh def. TAW 5-0
Match 2 - IRIS def. Clam 5-2
Match 3 - GwTh def. IRIS 5-2
Match 4 - Clam def. TAW 5-3
Match 5 - IRIS def. Clam 5-1

Reasoning: The Thralls pack a heavy punch and have a lot of experience under their belt. Clam and TAW don't have as much experience (I think) as IRIS.

Group D
Match 1 - Neither team shows 0-0
Match 2 - Mandarins def. Clock 0-0 (no show)
Match 3 - Mandarins win (no show)
Match 4 - Draw? 0-0 (no show)
Match 5 - Draw? 0-0 (no show)

Reasoning: Pretty sure the other three teams won't show, giving Mandarins nothing to do but arrive before watching the other streams in boredom.

Group E

Match 1 - Hatters def. Cupcakes 0-0 (no show)
Match 2 - BFS def. VOLWe 5-1
Match 3 - Gents def. Hatters 5-2
Match 4- Gents def. BFS 5-1
Match 5 - VOLWe def . Cupcakes 0-0 (no show)
Match 6 - Hatters def. VOLWe 5-0
Match 7 - BFS def. Hatters 5-3

Reasoning: I'm just tossing around that no show card a lot, although I hope I'm proven wrong. xD Overall I'm just going with the more experienced team. I'm fairly confident in all of these but the Match 7.

that would suck..

anyway for those interested in some insider knowledge of group B.

The first game is going to be very very interesting. TAW have slowly been moving from a casual team to a more organized and tactical team.
I have spent some time with Hunter from TAW and shown him how to play the diffrent maps, and also how valuable communcation and positioning is.
I can't wait to play this game.

I think I'm going to have to go through and re-count points. I'm pretty sure I should actually have 5 points (4 from A, 1 from B), and if I miscounted my own score then goodness knows what I missed on someone else's score.

Incidentally, I will be away from my computer most of the weekend until monday night, so odds are I won't be able to update anything until then at the earliest. So, you know, forewarning. :P

Ah, well some more bad news. The group C matches were not recorded, although I think we can get most of the scores. ((Although I still think that match 4 should have ended differently due to the time, but I have no way of proving that now. XD))

From what I recall

Match 2 - IRIS beats Clamour 5-0
Match 4 - Clamour Beats TAW 5-4
Match 5 - Clamour Beats IRIS 5-4
Title: Re: Sky League Tipping Thread

When you take into account that MAC basically replaced MAG and CC was counted as a forfeit, the results look like this:

D1: Muse def. MAC 5-0
D2: Mandarins def. CC 0-0
D3: Mandarins def. Muse 5-0
D4: MAC def. CC 0-0
D5: Muse def. MAC 5-0

So you could say that MAC counts as MAG, which means that a score of 3.3 is the maximum.

Or as Imagine said you could go ahead and not count it, which would probably make more sense.

Not quite, Thomas. Clamour went down 3-5 against IRIS the first time around. Here are the full results:

C1: GwTh def. TAW 5-0
C2: IRIS def. Clamour 5-3
C3: GwTh def. IRIS 5-0
C4: Clamour def. TAW 5-4
C5: Clamour def. IRIS 5-4

Also apparently The Clamour won their TAW match with 18 seconds left on the timer.

Congrats to TAW for their preformance despite playing with incomplete team (they had a guy with 15 matches and an AI on 1 ship, becouse they had 3 no shows on their team). TAW got near defeating Clamour (If I understand correctly understand has a benefit of being Ducks - and thus have a lot of very experienced players to coach any new team formed within) - and I'm pretty sure TAW were still the greatest underdogs in C bracket.

Ah, ty ty. I mixed up Match 1 and 2.

I still have my doubts on the timer, but even if I'm right, it's the ref's call.

Hm. This is a tough one. Normally I'd go for an overwhelming victory to Overwatch, but FTK showed a lot more ability than most people gave them credit for in the first grouping. Still, I'm not sure it will be enough to win against Overwatch, as they had to kick and claw their way through possibly the toughest Group to get into the brackets.

How's this scoring going to work? 1 for picking the right winner, 0.1 for the right matches won (2-0 or 2-1) , and another 0.1 for each correct match score?

OVW beats FTK 2-0 (5-2, 5-3)

Muse actually has a pretty strong team, however they're a little busy to practice regularly like most of the teams. If they had more open maps, I would have given them the win, as those are the maps they tend to be good at. But I suspect that Bubble's spire is just going to get wrecked on these close range maps.

Clam beats Muse 2-0 (5-3, 5-3)

I am going to have to spend some serious time going through things. Yay changes!

To give you an idea of what I am probably going to do...
Since I gave you the option of predicting no-shows, I have to give points to those who predicted correctly. I will pretend that the bracket ran as planned and no changes were made. Points will be awarded appropriately.
Then, I am going to run a phantom bracket based on the changes that will do effectively nothing. I am going to assume that nobody would predict a newer team to beat either Muse or the Mandarins, and I'm going to assume that nobody would predict Muse to beat the mandarins. So I am basically going to give everyone some points for correctly predicting that muse beats the new team, is beat by the mandarins, and beats the new team again. So yeah. Makes sense to me.

Regarding moving forwards.... Crap.
If every matchup is worth 1 point (not every battle) then we have already distributed a majority of the points. Which makes the group stage worth about as much as the rest of the tournament combined. Which sucks.
Unless anyone disagrees, I will make each battle worth 1 point. This means in a best of 3, a 2-0 can only give 2 points, while a 2-1 can give 3 points. So correctly predicting a closer match is more rewarding. This also makes the later rounds of the tournament worth more.
As always, you are only rewarded for correct guesses, no punished for incorrect guesses. If you predict a match going to the 3rd round and it doesn't you won't be punished.

Thomas and Allien' were the only 2 people to guess that more than one team from Group D would fail to show.
For matches with no winners (neither team shows) I awarded no points if you predicted a winner. Your predicted winner did not win. Sorry.  :-\
Thomas's lack of faith in the new teams led to him correctly guessing every match in the group.
I did not give Thomas credit for guessing the correct score. I will only be awarding bonus points for guessing the correct score on matches that are actually played.
I assumed everyone would predict the outcome of D (revised) correctly and awarded everyone 3 points accordingly.
If you disagree and say you would have guessed differently, I will take away your points...
Allien' leads in guessing kill results correctly.

This looks to be one of the most interesting weeks. Every match could go either way.

OVW and Gents, I have to give the upper hand to OVW, but if we don't play smart, I know the Gents could easily capitalize and knock us out.

Mandarins and GwTh, the Mandarins are absurdly good, but GwTh runs very interesting tactics, and could pull a surprise or 2 out of the hat. I don't see them managing it for 2 wins though.

Holy and CsR, CsR has been one of the favorites to advance, but after Holy rolled the Merry Men 5-0, I could see them surprising people even more. Should be a fascinating match to watch.

Clamour and Mad Hatters, I don't know what the Clamour team is going to look like on Saturday and I know the Hatters aren't slouches so I'm pretty confident that the Hatters walk away victorious. But I could see the Clamour pulling out a victory.

Regardless, I'm excited to watch/play. ^.^

Totally agree redria.
Those matches will be pretty interesting and they can go either way.
Was pretty hard to decide.

Gents vs OVW
Gents always were a passive team and got surprised quite often.
I think the super aggresive style OVW plays these days will give them the upper hand.

Mandarins vs Thralls
Quite hard aswell. I give it to the Mandarins cause they got alot more experience and they tend to adopt quite fast.
They dont get surprised that fast and they can easily change from a positional midrange snipe to a fast and brutal brawl.
On paritan the mobile ducks wont get ambushed that easy.
Dunes however with its low cover will enable the thralls to pull of one of their famous fast engages where they just crush you in seconds.
The Ducks never played Fjords stationary so thralls will probably not get their famous ambushs on the ducks.

Holy vs CsRy
Think Holy surprised everyone (even themselves) with their group victory.
They are sure quite good and the mappool they got the Ryders wont be able to pull off their long and hard sniping fights. They are quite good in brawls aswell but their tactics (or atleast the one i remember them) relys on stationary or slow moving opponents. Holy however will probably not play the wait game and get the fights to the Ryders.
I think they can outbrawl the ryders. And i want them to win. Newcomer wins are so much more enjoyable :D.

Clamour vs MadHatters
Clamour is a kinda new team with competetive/highlvl wise kinda inexperienced players for the most part.
Even though the MadHatters lost a bid of their strenght they have alot of experienced competetive players.
I think due to their experience they will beat Clamour.

PS: redone my tips for that last match.

These matches are going to be interesting. It could go either way for a lot of them.

These first matches are a tough prediction. I think Gents have an advantage on these maps, but OVW has ingenuity on their side; and I think OVW will pull it off.

These seconds matches I think will go in Duck's favor. They're well practiced and the maps fit their playstyle.

M2G3: Duck def GwTh 5-2

And of course I'm biased on these matches. I know this team is going to be really tough to beat.

Captain Smollett and Levi Mann are about 1 missed tipping away from getting dropped from the standings :O
Sammy B. T. and Mr. Ace Rimmer are somehow tied right now
N-Sunderland has the lead by almost 3 points but

Match 1
M1G1 OVW beats Duck 5-4
M2G2 Duck beats OVW 5-3
M3G3 Duck beats OVW 5-3
This could easily go either way. I am sure that both those teams scrimmed alot against each other which makes predictions for everyone not involved with those scrims extremly hard.
I think overall i would give the Ducks the edge but especially Fjords should give the style OVW played in the earlier stages of the tournament the upper hand. THis super aggresive style can easly beat a junker but i think the Ducks know how to beat it. This will be extremely interesting. Its a bid of a early final for me.

Match 2
M1G1 CSRY beats MH 5-3
M2G2 CSRY beats MH 5-4
While both those teams are really good i think Ryders have the edge. They defintetly have more experience in competetive matches and especially Hillerton knows alot of those tricks. The MH pilots are compared to this a bid green. Velvet got experience yes. He flew for the MH and Gents as subcaptain and got his experience from this but Hillerton just got more competetive experience.

predictions for everyone not involved with those scrims extremly hard.
And for everyone involved in the scrims. Let's be honest.

Its a bid of a early final for me.
TBH, I think there are 4 teams really on top of things ATM. No offense to the hatters or anyone else involved (this tournament has been crazy good) but I think OVW, Mandarins, CsR, and GwTh are pretty much the top tier right now.
I think the Mandarins style was the counter to the GwTh style, and that against almost any other team GwTh would have come out ahead.
CsR have a superbly powerful pair of ships that are being flown with excellent coordination, making them a threat on every map, in any situation.
OVW feels to me like a wildcard every time. I'm not really sure what our style is. We just all mesh really well together and are on top of our game at the moment.

On any given day these teams can lose outside of this tier, but these are the matches I've been looking for the whole time. I'm so nervouscited for this weekend and next.

Havent seen to much from Thralls recently to judge this.
I think the Thralls weren't at the top of their play on saturday. They sure are innovative and really good. Just not sure how good atm ...
Mandarin style doesnt fit thralls usual style to well for sure.
The other 3 for sure.

Match 1
M1G1 OVW beats Duck 5-4
M2G2 Duck beats OVW 5-4
M3G3 OVW beats Duck 5-3

I have to go with my people here, I wouldn't dare bet against them. That being said you can never ever rule the Mandarins out. Make no mistake whether 2 games or three, this match will be close, hard fought and one hell of a watch.

Match 2
M2G1 CSRY beats MH 5-3
M2G2 CSRY beats MH 5-3

Got to agree with Alistair here. The hatters are good, but I think the experience of CSR will win through here. I can't wait to see this. There is always the possibility the Hatters pull off either an upset or force a third game.

No matter who wins through to the final, this week and next should show some of the best the GOIO competitive scene has to offer and will provide a thrilling climax to the tournament.

M1G1: Mandarins def. OVW 5-0
M1G2: Mandarins def. OVW 5-0

I don't actually expect a double 5-0 here. OVW is one of the strongest teams out there and may very well beat us. These predictions are just better for my confidence I suppose.

M2G1: CSR def. Hatters 5-0
M2G2: CSR def. Hatters 5-0
M2G3: ---

CSR are always impressive, and they have an experience edge over Hatters here. Hatters might land some kills, but I can't see it going to three games.

Just for funsies:

M1G1: OvW def Mandarins 5-3
M1G2: Mandarins def OvW 5-3
M1G2: Mandarins def OvW 5-2

This might just go the other way, but I see 3 close games filled with awesomeness.

M2G1: CSR def Hatters 5-2
M2G2: Matters def CSR 5-4
M2G3: CSR def Hatters 5-3

CSR definitely have the experience going for them, and will take game one, with Hatters bouncing back with a clutch second game, but in the end I feel that CSR's experience will take them the game three.

M1 Mandarins beat Ryders 5-3
M2 Mandarins beat Ryders 5-2
M3 Mandarins beat Ryders 5-3
M4 --
M5 --

Having now re watched a lot of VOD's for the Skyleague, I'm giving this to the Mandarins in a 3-0 shut out. The Ryders are good, there is no doubt about it, but i feel their play style will be undone by the Ducks, much like Overwatch was in the Semi Finals. Ryders will get some kills in but I just don't think they have enough in them to win a match here.

I'm gonna be bold here. It didn't happen last week against Overwatch (we were crashed into by a rainbow), but I think shutout predictions look pretty.

G1: Mandarins def. CSR 5-0
G2: Mandarins def. CSR 5-0
G3: Mandarins def. CSR 5-0
G4: --------------------------
G5: --------------------------

Looking at those standings, redria, this is your cue to post exactly the opposite of my predictions ;)
Title: Re: Sky League Tipping Thread
Post by: Alistair MacBain on April 21, 2014, 05:18:08 pm
G1: Mandarin beats CSR 5-1
G2: Mandarin beats CSR 5-2
G3: CSR beats Mandarin 5-4
G4: Mandarin beats CSR 5-4
G5: ------------------------------

Mandarins will probably have the upper hand on fjords. Their usual aggresive rush when the game starts will give them the upper hand and allow them to react to anything CSR wants to do.
The map is just to open to sucessfully charge the mandarins. They are aware of the angles and they will move as soon as they see CSR moving into position.
Paritan will be a bid better for CSR but the higher altitudes still grant to much open field to approach the Mandarins.
Canyon ambush however with all the hard cover and clouds will probably give CSR the ability to get an approach on the Mandarins. They might loose the first engagement but once they know the Mandarin positioning they will most likely get some good charges on the Mandarins.
Duel can get interesting but the superior midrange fighting the ducks are able to do will probably give them the upper hand. They dont fear a CSR charge when they can disable one enemy ship and just outbrawl the charging opponent.

I would love to see Dunes and i actually think the experience in superlongrange fights CSR has with their old dual mobula style could give them the advantage.

I am super excited for this games and im sure it will be great to watch.

PS: redria you mixed up the numbers for game 4 and 5. You called both game 3 aswell ;).

Looking at those standings, redria, this is your cue to post exactly the opposite of my predictions ;)
Ahhh but then if Allien' predicts that CsR wins 2 matches, I lose to him. Also, do I bet against my actual prediction (sorry CsR :/)for a shot at winning?

Ah, why not. Let's make this a game. :D

G1: CsR def Duck 5-3
G2: CsR def Duck 5-4
G3: CsR def Duck 5-4
G4: ---
G5: ---

With regards to this, Paritan and Canyon should favor the mandarins.
Fjords favors the mandarins if we see pyramidions, but mobulas could make things interesting. However, with large height range mandarins should still have the advantage.
Mandarins should hope the match doesn't go past 3 games since they have troubles on Duel and Dunes probably favors the mobula builds CsR has taken previously.

Overall I see the mandarins winning. But that's not why we're here, is it?
CsR in 3 matches! New outfit, here I come!

PS: redria you mixed up the numbers for game 4 and 5. You called both game 3 aswell ;).
Bah. Oh well.

Would need to predict pretty different from Sunderland. But thats not how i think the games will actually end.
I stay with my predicitons.
I also dont need another outfit that much ^^.
If i ever want another one i can play in a devmatch or just buy it. Even if im thinking of a new dye for one of my outfits. But i dont want to delete the current one so i stay with it for now :D.

G2: CsR def Mandarins 5-3
G3: CsR def Mandarins 5-2
G4: Mandarins def CsR 5-1
G5: CsR def Mandarins 5-4

I feel that Mandarins will have the advantage on the more open maps(Fjords/DaD) with their artemis/hades junkers, while CsR will be able to maneuver the tighter maps and spring heavy ambushes. In the end CsR takes the final game on the most open map with a clutch final kill after a 4-4 tie.

Best prediction. +100 points if correct.

Also acceptable: neither team shows, and Urz allows 2 new teams to enter in their place: the Crimson Ducks, and the MandaRiders. Both teams spend the entire time flying in circles around the maps and every match ends in a 0-0 tie. Museosaurs declared champions.
