Title: Make rangefinder work on mines.
Post by: Omniraptor on January 23, 2014, 07:47:54 pm
See title. Just something that I think would be fun, screaming at captain "Captain, there are mines ahead, range 300 meters. Captain, why are we not stopping. Range is now 250 meters. Range 200, Captain, hello? CAPTAIN ARE YOU ****ING ASLEEP OH GOD DO SOMETHING, 100m, /me frantically tries to grab helm while screaming incoherently, 50m, BOOM. Cap: Oh omni was something the matter, I was just heading to the hold for some moonsh--, er, spare parts. Why are we respawning?"

Also it would allow more precise split-second mine deployment.

If someone can't see the mine they are charging directly into or has the tools to avoid it but doesn't use them, then adding the feature to range finder would do nothing to help. Target indicators around them might work better but with potential of bringing the engine to it's knees in mine wars matches.

I would much rather see harpoons work on the mines.

Lemoon, I'm with you man. Been asking about that since before mines were released.

obviously the scenario will only happen with afk captains but it was fun to write.

As I said, rangefinder working on mines will let you place mines much more precisely. especially when it comes to weird angles.

I just wanted to drag that mine with me...

Has Wilson finished his notes on the mine launcher yet? Seems to be the only gun he forgot to add.

Would keep  ships from trying to follow too closely.

Darn that lazy Wilson.  Someone needs to email Muse about that one and to update the light flak with its arm time while they're at it.

That'd be a nice feature for helping avoid mines, although I'm not sure how useful it would be at placing them. (Be kind of hard to gauge the distance of a mine you haven't placed yet).

because you would be able to see how far away the mine deploys under different conditions.

Regular is 200 meters, lochnagar is 80.4 meters, incendiary is 150.75 meters, greased and heatsink are 160.8, and lesmok is 341.7

What about shooting at different angles?

That's a bit tougher, since it currently doesn't have an entry in Wilson's notes. You'd need the arc ranges and bullet drop to get an exact range, but at the same time things in the game are so dynamic (ships moving constantly) that distances are going to change, especially at that close of range. Often the rough distance is more than enough to get you on target.
