Title: GoI haikus
Post by: Gryphos on January 14, 2014, 11:01:29 am
A place for all the GoI related haikus that one can come up with, such as…

"I'm an idiot. I'm a massive idiot. Suicide charge time"

"A Mobula comes. Or is it the Manta Ray? Either way it's fat."

Got separated,
Then flew in to an ambush,
Blame it all on Shink.

Greased in the flamer,
The fires engulf their ship.
I have too much fun.

I still don't know how you count syllables in English (I watched a video and all I can say is wtf xD It's way easier in Spanish) but I'll give it a try.

I love flying my ship,
the sky makes me feel calm.
SHI- THAT'S THEIR SPIRE, RUN!

Let's rush the spire,
Oh God, is that a mine field?
Back out nice and slow.

Oh for god's sake stop firing!

Another comes aboard.

small fix on this to make it 5, 7, 5:
When I choose gunner,
Another one comes aboard.
Back to engineer...

Even though these 5 syllable, 7 syllable, 5  syllable Haikus are more common I don't think it is strictly required to be defined as a Haiku.

I hope you don't mind me converting these to the common Haiku form.  Please let me know if you do.

Using buffed field guns,
Their armor drops in no time,
I am a bad man.

I smell an ambush,
Proceeding at one fourth speed,
Where did Zill come from?

All hands keep shooting
You can fix it when they're dead
Let the engines burn

is fire one syllable or two? ok, it's probably one.

Fly upon the wings
of a ship so strong and true,
in to the sunset.

I scan the ships deck,
The engineers fixing gears
Of the battered hull.

The gunners polish
Brassy battered sparking guns
And organise rounds.

Far in the distance,
Another ship charges forth
A huge galleon.

A battle ensues,
The burning sky with fury,
as rounds burst the hull.

Phoenix claw to turn,
Barrels of moonshine to burn
And so much to learn.

When battle is done
The burning embers remain
and silence remains.

Exhausted we fly
To a port or hiding place
To rest and reflect.
Title: Re: GoI haikus

Oxford English Dictionary says:

Hire
Line breaks: hire
Pronunciation: /ˈhʌɪə

Higher
Line breaks: High¦er
Pronunciation: /ˈhʌɪə

Fire
Line breaks: fire
Pronunciation: /ˈfʌɪə

The number of line breaks denoted the number of syllables that a word has. Hire has one, Higher has two. Fire has one.

Such Naziism
Grammar is so important.
My work here is done.
Title: Re: GoI haikus
Post by: ramjamslam on May 27, 2014, 02:22:24 am
Hire and Higher are homophones how can they have different syllables?  By those rules this is a 5/7/5 haiku:

Hire Higher Higher
Higher Higher Hire Higher,
Higher Higher Hire.
Title: Re: GoI haikus
Post by: Mod Josie on May 27, 2014, 04:53:42 am
You're right, it is a haiku! :D

Homophones only go so far in the Queen's English. There is a subtle nuance in their pronunciation that isn't important for regular speakers. The same is true of all the different iterations of 'there' such as 'their' and 'they're'. Higher has two syllables when using the nuances, where hire and fire have only one. Don't ask me why - it's complicated.

Spelling and Grammar,
Pronunciation is king.
Intonation rulz.

What are you saying?
"Ineffective flamer build"?
This does not compute.

Need five syllables?
You can end a HaiKu with:
"Blame it all on Shink"

Hm, let me try that.
If it does work, well then I

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
This is a haiku
It even rhymes, too.

Did I do this right?

No, it is one line of five syllables, a second of seven, and w third of five. It also doesn't have to rhyme.

I really think that
Schwupp is only one syllable
But sounds very bad

I think that this haiku was bad
My rhymes may be too
I still tried my best
To write these two

Not being a mother-tongue is very annoying when trying to understand how many syllables does a word have.
