It strikes me as though there are many ammo types covering most parts of the spectrum, there is an absence of ammunition (Or even e engineering tools) that enhance the reload speed. Thus, I propose a Reload-Speed enhancing ammunition type, allowing for a faster reload speed and possibly clip size, with a sacrifice to damage, and/or spread.
Negative modifiers
Proposed Damage Modifier: 75% damage
Proposed Spread Increase: +25% to 40% Spread
Positive Modifiers
Proposed Reload-Speed Enhancement: -25% to -50% Reload time
Proposed Clip Size enhancement: +10% Clip Size Increase

What's to stop you from exploiting it by simply loading in to get a shorter reload before switching at the last second? That is my main problem.

Jup.
Im sure we had this back in really really old days and it was a must have for gunners due to the reload modification to just start reload and then switch to the real ammo at the end of reload.

The difference is, back in ancient times switching ammo types didn't initiate a reload. That sort of behaviour would be impossible now.
-
Simple: The reload will fail if the ammo type loading is switched.

I don't see that ammo being more useful than an ammo that just increases damage through "x" means (ie. more damage, larger clip, ect.).
That, and changing a mechanic like :
Simple: The reload will fail if the ammo type loading is switched.
If you mean for the new ammo only, that just weakens it. If you mean for all ammo, you change the mechanic altogether, and in a very negative way.

Hmm, idea revision... the ammo is loaded in like normal, and after the whole volley is released, each time a volley is launched, for X amount of times afterwards, the ammunition being loaded will get a loading speed boost.
Think of it as a "lubrication ammunition type", enhancing the reload speed by lubricating the barrel of the gun and its reloading mechanism.
