Quick questions-
Can a ship, such as a squid, fly at top speed going backwards, as well as forward? Or is there a speed penalty for doing so?
Do the speed tools affect reverse movement?
If a system has been chemical sprayed, does it still take fire damage? Or does it just resist catching on fire?
On a gun, is it better to use grease rounds for more ammo/less damage, or charged rounds for less ammo/more damage on things like the Whirlwind or Dragon Tongue?
-
I think the backward speed is less than the forward speed, at least that's the impression I get when I fly backwards.
So far Kerosene has affected my reverse movement dramatically, by effectively not making it happen :P I catched myself having throttle full on reverse and using Kerosene, and we only moved backwards very very slowly.
I think it still takes the little fire damage that the flamethrower does but just doesn't get burned.
I'll leave the gunnery questions to more skilled Gunners than me :P

For a whirlwind, it is typically either Heavy clip, or Greased (at least in most circles).... For the dragon tongue, the main ammo of choice is lesmok... it gives you more range

I understand that Heavy clip tightens the spread and Lesmok gives increased range, but I'm still curious. When I am a gunner, I usually keep Lesmok on any small gun until I get within closer range. Then, I change ammo. I want to find out, though, which ammo is better?
-
well that's the thing.... there is no set recommendation, as this is based on your playing style... In my experience, for the Flack & Gat, I use heavy clip (and I don't usually switch)... Flamethrower is lesmok, Merc = Charged and so on...

Backwards movement is slower than forwards movement, but I think pilot items can help. I have moonshined in full reverse and I was able to make some distance between me and a charging ship of the same type. But this is just subjective observation, the other ship may have slowed down because I broke his engines, or the pilot decided I he had better double team my ally.

Pilot items always work in reverse.

Its slower going in reverse.

Yupp.

As far as I understand it, It is immune to getting more fire stacks, but still takes fire damage.

It all depends on the gun. No one ammo is best for everything. In regard to the Whrilwind, heavy will bring the spray of bullets closer, making it more accurate. Greased will give you more ammo and let you spray a lot of bullets very fast. Its more inaccurate though. Preference there. On the Dragon Tongue, neither of those really do too much for it. Burst will increase its aoe for some fun times, and lesmok increases the range, making it usable in more situations. Again, preferences.

I am not entirely sure but I think greased increases the flame thrower's particles per second, causing more fire stacks over the same period of burn. I always take lesmok for flame since the extra reach is usually more important.
