Title: Fireworks after birthday week
Post by: Squash on November 03, 2013, 08:20:42 pm
I was thinking, the fireworks are such a cool effect, wouldn't it be desirable to leave them in the game, but make it an option when hosting a game whether there would be fireworks or not, in the same way you choose whether to play a beginner lobby or not. Additionally, having the option to host a fireworks enabled game could be a level reward.

Just my $0.02

Why not just make them look like proper explosions, so it still fits? I do enjoy the explosions + debris.

Agreed, I want this. Actually if we do recolor/edit them to be explosions we could have an option to recolor them as fireworks in the menu.

This gets my vote.

Alternatively, since the birthday theme is subtle, make it a step towards ship customization: put it in the store. For $X, you can have your ship decked with birthday bunting, and have it explode into fireworks when destroyed.

I'm just going to make a pointless post to agree with everything this man says.

i'm fairly sure we could count all of cake in on this. i know i want the fireworks to stay, i even asked bubbles and keyvias to keep them when i was on a ship with them, they said its a very common request.

I think we would at least extend the birthday celebrations to a whole birthmonth.

"Hey man thats not realistic enough!"
"Air ships aren't supposed to explode in fireworks!!"

^That is the expected complaints of the realistic airship combat part of this community. The ones who are trying to keep this game from becoming something much grander.

I say...do it. Make it DLC or something and give people various colors they can buy and change out.

But before that, give us more server mutator controls. The purists can play GOIO the way they want and the rest of the community can play the way they want. Everyone wins. Let the community decide what they like. Just look at how Day Z put Arma II on the map. How a WCIII mod created a booming MOBA gaming scene. How Bungie turned a crappy level editor into a major selling point of Halo. Then heck...one word...Minecraft. Its simple...giving a community the ability to tinker leads to more positive results than negative.

Every time I ask someone what they think about the patch, the first thing they mention is how awesome the fireworks are. xD

I'll reiterate my concern: this works fantastically when the UI is designed specifically to give this information, and when the community is larger. Our player base is small, and having those few games that are already live split between any number of mutations both encourages achievement farming and makes normal games harder to find and harder to play in. If we had thousands of people online at any given time, sure. But with only 300-400 players active at once (and often far less) I'd see this as an issue.

Let's keep this focused on the fireworks. The thread to talk to about Sever Side mods is here:

I rather have the fireworks be a rare occasion.

It is starting to be distracting. Why not reskin the firework to be used differently? Like when a ship gets destroyed, it gets one firework animation that is the usual yellow spark instead of a colorfull array of many firework animations when one ship dies.

I would rather it be a client side option. The fire works don't add anything to game play aside form allowing people to tell when a kill was made. So there is no reason why one player should be allowed to see them while another player is not.

The same argument could be made for cosmetic items though.

Maybe add a few more decorations/death effects, then them to the store and add a select number to the achievement system? Maybe tied to the Good Citizenship medals, or something.

I would love for the fireworks to be a graphics option you could toggle on or off. Personally, I would keep them on constantly. They are simply fun and, as far as I can tell, do not give an advantage to the individuals who can see them.

Seems harmless and yet very enjoyable. So long as there is a toggle option and people who do not want fireworks can turn them off.

I don't like the idea of the fireworks staying. To me the fireworks are a great thing for special occasions such as the game's birthday, but retaining them would probably just ruin the aesthetic of the game, which needs to have a certain degree of authenticity. Not realism, but definitely authenticity.

And I'll reiterate again...our playerbase is not small. The active playerbase is. If you give them reasons to keep playing, they'll come back and you'll also stir up more. No game has ever become popular on just stock gameplay. Even those that don't have modding have multiple gametypes and modes to compensate. We only have 2 gametypes in GOIO...that is not enough and I've seen players complain of boredom.

How about different destruction animations? Say if you destroy a ship using rockets, you get the firework animation? And then more types of animations for different deaths!

I fireworks will get dull if they're over used. I'd like to see them occasionally on celebration worthy events in the future though - like New Year's Eve, World Rhino Day (http://www.worldrhinoday.org/media/) and cake tournaments.

How about if you destroy a ship with ramjamslam using the gun or if you destroy another ship by ramming you get the fireworks animation?

I actually disagree guys. Lets keep the fireworks special! Like only do it on occasions where there is actually something to celebrate like christmas, release of co-op/adventuremode or other hollyday thingies. The fireworks would kinda lose its appeal if it would always be there, but could be a really fun running gag kinda thing if it would pass along every so often ^^
