Title: Do you use any custom keybinds?
Post by: Erheller on August 25, 2013, 11:22:19 pm
Do you use any custom keybinds? If so, share them here!

For me, I have:
PushToTalk set to Left Control - Lets me talk without having to move my middle finger away from the WASD keys
Map set to Left Shift - Lets me check the map very easily without having to move my hand

I didn't, but after seeing what you do I will probably have to. At the very least, I'll probably move push-to-talk to Left Shift so that I can continue to move around while talking.

I put my throttle up and down buttons as the side mouse keys instead of on the keyboard (mouse buttons 4 and 5).

Ctrl for descend and spacebar for ascend. Group chat on a side button of my mouse

Throttle controls shifted to the 4 and 5 mouse buttons. Map shifted to scroll wheel button.

Completely vanilla for me.

Ascend, and descend are set to the two side buttons on my mouse... mount/dismount is set to my middle mouse button.... throttle controls = w/s... turning a/d

My throttle is set to the 1 and 3 keys on the top of my mouse and my tools are set to 4, 5, 6 and 7 on the side.

I Flipped my Aecend and Decend keys. W goes down and S goes up. Having misspent my youth playing flight sims of one kind or another I was a little confused when my airship started rising when I pushed the controller forward (w key) and descended when I pulled back (s key0)

I changed all my piloting controls (ascend/descend/accelerate/deccelerate) so they are on my mouse leaving me one hand free to operate any random keys (helm tools, chat, dismount)
I am left handed so I have always had to come up with moderatly creative keybindings.

If you have a fancy mouse with tons of extra buttons, you probably are very used to remapping keys to it in every game. Unfortunately I have a standard office-style mouse and keyboard. 2 mouse buttons and a scroll wheel. And I cannot push more than 5 or so keys at once, or the keyboard becomes unresponsive.

The following setup works very well for me as a pilot. It requires only a few re-binds to strongly prevent accidentally leaving the hull.  It helps with 'key limit' (pressing too many keys at once) on a standard keyboard. It also makes the map very accessible on the left hand without giving up any mobility. Plus, it means more frantic mouse clicking for the pilot, and everyone knows ... more clicking = more fun.

For pilot:
Throttle up to left mouse
Throttle down right mouse

Global:
Map to Q or ALT

A variant I played around with was "car pedal" style, decelerate on left and accelerate on right. I didn't like it.

But thats it. Makes a world of difference.

Just did a few rebinds after reading this thread.

Throttle up: left mouse
down: right mouse

Going up: Button 4
down: 5

PTT: Q
Enter/Leave: B

Other than that, normal.

I've got throttle on mousewheel, everything else is pretty standard.

I long ago moved from wasd to esdf. Currently considering moving to rdfg, to give even more buttons to the little finger, which is at all times available...

I moved my voice chat button to Left-Shift; it's worked out great, because it lets me move freely while I'm talking. I also put captain chat on Caps Lock, but I haven't played captain since then.

How do you change throttle to mousewheel?

You click on the throttle button in the controls menu and when it asks you to press a key you use the mousewheel.

I've recently rebinded the map to Q. It's been kind of difficult adjusting but I know it'll be better in the long run, not having to move my hand from WASD.

Mainly voice chat on LeftShift, which causes my mic to lock-on occasionally..

I'm going to try out a setup for when I pilot where I use the pedals from my steering wheel for height control and voice chat and WS for throttle adjustments.

One of the first things I did was to move the dismount helm button from the E default so I wouldn't hit it by accident in the thick of battle and fall off the ship.

Q for the map.  After reading this thread I'll probably re-map the mount/dismount key.  Too many times I've dismounted when I meant to throttle up and it cost me the match...

Gun
S default munition
A second munition
W third munition
D fourth munition
M3 reload
3 look left (Smooth tracking keeps things on target when turning fast or with a damaged gun)
R look right (Same as above, the arrow key defaults are too far away to be useful)
L-Shift to dismount

Helm
W for descend
S for ascend
Wheel for throttle
1 second piloting tool
2 fourth piloting tool
4 third piloting tool (I prefer to play gunner, and this compromise is actually more ergonomic)
Space to return piloting tool to neutral. (Easy to use in a panic response if I forget to turn stuff off)
L-Shift to dismount

I use a custom load-out for piloting.

And in general my tools are rebound as well as push to talk keys.

I use my naga with num lock on and bind the throttle to it the one and two keys.

I have r on crew chat, f for captain and g for party. zxcv are my tools and tab is my map for ease of use.

I could optimize it more but I'm way to used to it this way.

...And I cannot push more than 5 or so keys at once, or the keyboard becomes unresponsive.

I have to be really careful of this as well. For whatever reason (I've yet to do any intense research) I can't hold three keys and press a fourth usually. If I'm turning while trying to change altitude and talking to my crew (A+W+X) I usually can't change my throttle until I let go of one of the keys (usually chat). I think the same happens for map on Q if three keys are already pressed.

I'm pretty sure this is a limitation of your keyboard.

I have the same problem with mine but from what I understand, fancy gaming keyboards and other higher end keyboards don't suffer from this problem.

See Smollett's post. There's no connection to the OS, it's all to do with keyboard limitations. I get the same thing with my keyboard, only three keys at once.

I use one of those Razor gaming keypads (http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-keyboards-keypads/razer-nostromo), so I change the keymap on it to fit the GOI defaults. But everything I need is under my one hand, including separate PTT for Crew/TS/Party/Captain VoIP.

Is there a cunning trick to setting things to the mouse wheel scroll? I tried to set acceleration to the wheel. After clicking on the bind, where it's waiting for input, rotating the wheel doesn't register - clicking the middle button does, but not the ol' wheely scroller...

I don't really know if you can have a scroll up/down bind. The way I do it is left click to accelerate, right click to decelerate. It takes about a week to get used to, but not having to take my fingers off the steering wasd commands to change throttle is useful.

Another pro tip for captains, just take the E key to dismount completely off. Use space to get off helm, it'll take away the freak E hits and all of a sudden you're off helm in the middle of a fight.

I have my map bound to Q, can't even begin to say how useful this is to be able to hit it with one hand and not reach for M. I put the task list to T, because chances are I don't really need to see it right away, so I don't mind reaching a bit for that key.

Lastly, I use a push-to-talk setup for TeamSpeak when I'm playing with my clan, and I bind it to my mouse 4 button (aka the back button for a browser). If you use any outside of game voice feature, it might be a good idea for ya too.

Are you, by any chance, on a Linux distro? Last time I booted my Ubuntu and ran GoIO, there was a bug where you couldn't bind the mouse wheel, and the wheel didn't work correctly to scroll lists. If you're on windows, you should be able to bind the wheel the same as you would any other key.

Hi Dragonmere,

Nope, nothing so fancy; Windows 7 with a Logitech G9 mouse. Scrolling works fine for what it's already bound to - zoom and, until I changed it, swapping through ammo/tools. Just can't rebind it is all.

NoWuffo, yes similar here - side mouse buttons rather than left and right, but same principle :)  Would prefer scrolling though, just feels more natural for some odd reason.

Ah well, if it doesn't work then it's not a big deal, I just wondered is all. Maybe there's a keybinds file somewhere that I can fiddle with to get around it...

Cheers,
 - Jon

I removed E as the helm dismount for reasons. Other than that i use standard keys for everything though i like the idea of using the mouse buttons as throttle.

Try it, and give it a full week to get used to it. You won't look back. I'd also vouch for making the map a little easier to grab with your left hand, but to each their own

Also, before I knew about custom keybindings, I actually used my key puller to pull up my "E" key from my keyboard whenever I took the helm so I wouldn't accidentally hit it! It's so much easier now that the key does nothing.

I switched the map key to the back button on my mouse and had crew chat assigned to CTRL, party chat to SHIFT and captain chat to default. I wouldn't mind shifting captain chat to ALT or something because C can pull my finger off right turn...

I might have to try the left/right mouse buttons as accelerate/decelerate, but I can relate to wanting to put that on the scroll wheel. That'd feel quite apt and given that I don't use the scroll wheel for tools I don't think it would interfere with anything.

I very occasionally slip from the helm so retiring E sounds like a good idea too. I recently created an 'autoclick' on middle mouse button using Setpoint for my G400 so that repairing, rebuilding and buffing wasn't so hard on my finger/hands/tendons.

Thank you eukari for left-shift voice chat suggestion. It really should be default, because with X it's next to impossible to strafe right and talk.

Personally I also use wa for throttle and right/left click for altitude control. Seems more natural to use both hands to fly.

Q-map and mousewheel-throttle here.

I like the autoclick idea, is it any easy to do? This is not a game about breaking mouses, is it?

I'm taking the leftshift-voicechat suggestion, and i'm thinking about space-takehelm. Is it really useful? Isn't it weird to use the same key for jump...

Wait.

The same key for jumping.

Jump on the helm.
Jump on the guns.

It's perfect.

Steering and Altitude adjustment: WASD,
Acceleration: mouse scroll
Tools: 1234
Voice chat: ctrl, shift, capslock
Pilot mark: 3rd mb
voice commands: q
rest: default

I changed my (Action) button to [Spacebar] and set [Alt] to (Jump) because sometimes while trying to gain altitude with [W], I would accidentally hit [E] and let go of my helm and run forward. Not very nice in the middle of a fight

Changing key bindings is among the first things I do when getting a game.

Plz don't judge me:
W/S - forward/back
R/F - up/down
T/Y/U/I - Global, team, crew, party chat
Z/X - Team, party voice chat
Mouse Thumb Button - Voice chat
Middle Mouse Button - Captain Mark
Q - Map (makes it really easy to check map quickly)
M - Cheevo quicklist

Q for Map
Title: Re: Do you use any custom keybinds?

My main changes from standard are left shift for the map and left click/right click for throttle up/down.  Also, I use F for third person which I need to quickly switch from 3rd person to 1st person when trying to use the CaptainTarget as it is way too hard to CaptainTarget in 3rd person.  I used to have CaptainTarget on middle mouse, the default of B is way too far away to hit so I'm going to have to move it back to middle click.
