Title: Profile Pic, Reason?
Post by: Gambrill on July 08, 2013, 11:35:43 am
I see a lot of different pics and i would just love to know why you guys picked what you picked :)

Mine is of a little 3 week old kitten we found on the streets who was covered in fleas the size of coco pops and smelly, we cleaned him up, de-wormed him, fed the half-starved little wretch and potty trained him. After all this we were then told we were not allowed to keep him as we lived in a flat and that we were in breach of some animal rights. so a way of keeping him is through all the pictures we have :)  still miss it when he used to cuddle up to us at night :/  (sorry about any feels)

What about you guys?

Mine is from a book, Divergent.... I liked the Dauntless, so I went with their emblem.

Mine is from the artist of a now more or less defunct webcomic... it's basically a version of myself in the character style of his comic.

Homeworld, I love that series to death and back. The pic its self is taken from the relic forum and I've used it as my default in many place minus steam.

It is a picture of me at a steam punk convention. My wife is more into cosplay than I. Fortunately she can't have a scruffy mundane on her arm so she goes shopping for me, and I get to look cool without the effort.

Mine is some concept art I'm desinging for my clan NAF. I'm having quite a bit of fun doing it seeing as how this is the first time I'm attempting to do something like this.

Despite the name, I'm not really an role-playing account, so I didn't want to use an actual picture of the Shat.

The ship seemed like a better choice.

Uhh,

It's a dragon.

Why is this even a question? Dragons are cool. So my profile is a dragon. Simple. As. That. I may have to put Raft's logo on it somewhere.

Nah, you can keep your pic however you want it. Only throw the logo in if you really want to.

I've used this same Sonic avatar on every forum/message board dating back to 2006 or so. My internet moniker always used to be "Hedgehog" and I'm a big Sonic the Hedgehog fan, so it just made sense.
Title: Re: Profile Pic, Reason?
Post by: Sgt. Spoon on July 08, 2013, 02:59:25 pm
urm... it's a spoon... ... with a sergeants insignia.. it makes sense.. right?
...

Seriously though it started with me coming up with my brilliant nickname, and getting a random spoon-image as my steam avatar. Then my friends liked the idea and got similar names. One of 'em, Lt. Plate, then came up with the idea of putting an Lt insignia on top of the cuttlery. So I just swiped a Sgt insignia from Halo 3 and so I got this.  (http://forums.tripwireinteractive.com/image.php?u=32990&dateline=1326385690)

Then after having that for quite a while my stalker actually found the old picture I'd used for it, and so I decided to make my own version of it. And so I got what I have now.

Title: Re: Profile Pic, Reason?
Post by: Sgt. Spoon on July 08, 2013, 03:59:47 pm
You have a stalker?
had.. hehe yeah kinda. t'was some random 13 year old kid who popped up on steam one day, said he had a friend who was in the same steam-group as me. I was like "aaalright... I guess?". Then he started messaging me, jumping into my games, playing with me and following me around everywhere in cyberland... was kinda wierd, and a bit funny so I just let it run. I just reffered to him as "my stalker" to my friends, hehe.

I think the last I saw of him was when I accidentally left him with my old regiments clan-mates, after he'd just joined that as well.

mine is the alchemical symbol for the Sulphur of the Philosophers as I've always been intested in Alchemical drawings and symbols. That and it looks like a pyramideon that's on fire and firing 3 guns, basically representative of about 95% of my time in GOIOL.

Gilder from Skies of Arcadia with the Black Flight flag in the background. Flag also part taken from the Blue Rogues logo in Skies of Arcadia that has been shopped to change the swords and remove the belt covering one eye. Black Flight flag is kind of a symbol for air pirates. Goggles added to signify the steampunk setting. Class emblems in swords are not only to cover up shopping inconsistencies but also have meaning. The pilots are the hilts of the swords. They control the sword's effectiveness. But without the engineers and gunners the swords/pilots have no power. So their emblems are placed in the blades where the original rogue logo has a cut out. Original name is based on an actual squadron in WWI. So, it ties in a lore where the squadron stuck together and eventually became air pirates.

Glad to see another fan of that game, loved the Gamecube version. Never played the original on Dreamcast.

Dreamcast version was better in some ways. Audio quality was better and I wasn't quite happy with some of the legends additions. Liked it when the DC version left them open to interpretation. But also because I wrote a whole sequel book based on one of the characters which Legends decided to give more background on and it conflicts with my book. Paistol's story was probably the only plus side I found to Legends. Gives more of a glimpse of what happened in the Valua/Nasr war which happened before the original story.

As a kid I grew up watching Power Rangers. Not any of this 'Samurai' or 'Mystic' trash that you see nowadays, but the classic 'Mighty Mophin'' and a couple series following that. Why the Green Ranger? He's an understated badass, although, now I think about it, 60% of the time he was American every time. Which is odd, as I'm British. That's where the suit comes in- as not only a Gent but a True Brit I've got to look dapper on all occasions. More tea?

I always thought your dragon was facing forwards, not backwards, from the profile pic. Sort of rearing up and backwards like a more snakelike dragon.

Komodo Joe's racing avatar from Crash Team Racing for the PS1. CTR was one of my most favorite video games of all time, and is really the only racing game I've ever enjoyed. Plus, I loved Crash Bandicoot a ton when Naughty Dog still developed games for the series. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=AfM9L1YOUHE#t=39s

Komodo Joe is a boss racer from that game, and after you beat him, you could race as him. He was just awesome in every way, and had amazing racer stats, too... but he was only my second favorite character. My avatar was going to be either him, or my first favorite character from the series- Ripper Roo.
Didn't pick this one, though, cos I didn't like the avatar as much. He was so OP in that game...

Mine is a picture of me wearing a trench coat, holding a Pabst Blue Ribbon, and smoking 2 cigarettes at once. Typical night at the bar. It also serves as a tribute to the avatar I used on the X-Band Modem for SNES way back in the day. X-Band is where my obsession with online gaming started...

Never got around to CTR, but I loved the old Crash games. N. Cortex from Warped was the first final boss I ever beat as a kid (Spyro 3 was my first 100%).

N. Gin was always my favorite character, though.

Quite close. Archduke John of Austria never got important with the monarchy because he married a postman's daughter, but he was very important for setting the ground for Styrias "technological" future. Kind of THE identification figure for Styrians, so I use it for baiting other Austrians to get in touch :P

Listen, strange ponies floating in the stars distributin' wings is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical celestial ceremony. You can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some astral tart threw some feathers at you. I went 'round sayin' I was Emperor, just because some glowing bint lobbed an airfoil at me, they'd put me away.

Mine is a Polandball because...well, I'm Polish and why the hell not. Polandball can into funny jokes.

Before that I've had a nuclear blast* as avatar. I changed it because I started a thread where I warned community about people using communist symbols in GOIO and (naively) hoping that people will help me report those kind of disgusting behaviour. Then someone pointed out "But, Disaster, you have nuclear blast in profile pic and Hiroshima and Nagasaki, y'know!". I don't think they were right (and even that it wronged anyone anywhere at any point) but I did change it for the sake of the argument that I truly wish that those poeple I fight with had the same amout of decency in them. They don't.

@Mr. Disaster
I'm okay with symbols because, well, they are just a visual pattern that happen to have a meaning in our minds.
So, I really really miss your old profile pic. It had more of that "Mr. Disaster" meaning/feeling to it. And I think that hammer-sickle-communist argument really shouldn't have happened.

Thank you for whoever that revived this thread. I liked reading through it.

My Profile Pic is just a screen capture of my actual GOIO character. I don't use the same hair anymore (since I've got hats), but I really like the Shaded Spectacles. It gives my character look like the Muska's government agents from the Castle in the Sky.

Yeah, personally I think you should change it back. I Mean, there are symbols that could be seen as bad (like the Hammer and Sickle) but then there's just an explosion. An atomic explosion wasn't even originally made for war, it was Einstein's creation/idea/thing he realized (I think it was Einstein, woops if it wasn't. Point is, I'm pretty sure it wasn't made for war and war only. It was just Splitting an atom and seeing some cool energy shit). That's like saying Pencils are offensive because Lead is in bullets.

Those were the days...

When you were the Replaceable redshirt.  :D

I kid, I kid.

It's "I'm a kid", you absolute nerd.

Kid in this case is used as a verb meaning: to deceive (someone) in a playful or teasing way.

And yes, I am an absolute nerd.  :D

I'm not okay with symbols that represent totalitarian sinister regime. I've stated my reasons in that thread and I won't change my mind. I may sound like a mad man but I think that it is a kind of duty of me as a person and of me as Pole to remind people that "no, communism is/was not okay".
I miss it too, but I changed it to make a point. I also think that nothing says "Disaster" more than a huge explosion.

I changed it to make a point that even given a non-sincere argument that my avatar is insulting or hurting someone is enough for a reason for me to apologise and change it. And as I said before - I could only WISH that those kind of scum people have the same amount of decency. I couldn't have fighted for my cause with people calling me a hypocryte.

That is a ball governor used to control the speed of an engine. It is 'governed' by gravity and the weight of the balls spinning. Setting the ball limit higher allows the engine to go faster.  Thus gave rise to the sayings "Going balls up" meaning going to full speed, and "Balls to the walls", meaning pushing up to the governor and engine's limit.

The sayings have lost their original meanings, but are still quite common.

Edit: In case you think I am making it up for some bad "balls rising" jokes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrifugal_governor

I thought "balls to the wall" was based on aircraft throttle levers capped with spheres which, when pushed to full throttle, can touch the wall of the instrument panel.

Quite close. Archduke John of Austria never got important with the monarchy because he married a postman's daughter, but he was very important for setting the ground for Styrias "technological" future. Kind of THE identification figure for Styrians, so I use it for baiting other Austrians to get in touch :P

My first guess was the guy from the second Ghostbusters. I never liked history in school.

It was baaaack in time when I played lots of MMORPGs and struggled with lot of mistrust from other players

"Don't pretend you are actual girl, you're just guy who plays female character!"
"Shut down that little kid voice in RK"
"OMFG our healer sounds like 11 years old"
"Oh you are gamer girl? You must be REALLY ugly then"

So since those time I got used to put my real pictures as profile avatar and actually got used to it. So it has become a nice tradition =)

well, you atleast get a semi-decent fanbase with creepers.

"I'm gunna destroy you" "pests" are led to believe creepers are the stereotype and and try to stray off mainstream just for the sake of it, while building hostility in the proccess.

Can we all just relax and sit down a moment and maybe, you know, pretend you're not talking to a girl, but rather a human being?

Hey I actually prefer to be a girl rather than a human creature. *

*Feminism in Russia is more like fighting for female rights rather than equal ones. Communism and socialism made us equal and almost sexless, so generally "feminism" here is actually fighting to fulfill a natural desire of woman to be sexual object rather than washin-workin-fixin-nursin machine.

Not so much an object, though, I don't think.

I stand to be corrected, of course, and I get your meaning, but I don't quite agree with the wording.

I'm a DJ and producer who goes by the stage name Anglerfish (and my name is Sparky, which is where sparklerfish comes from -- it's just those two words mushed together).  My avatar is my logo, which you can view larger and listen to some crazy choons on my soundcloud at:

http://www.soundcloud.com/anglerfish

And if you like it (or even if you don't and just want to do me a solid), you can go ahead and "like" my facebook page at:

http://www.facebook.com/djanglerfish

God, I love an opportunity for blatant self-promotion.

PS: fun fact, you may see some tunes credited to Anglerfish and Lucider -- Lucider is Tix Plicky in GoIO

Sparkler, the best promotions and advertisement are self promotions.

Although I sometimes advertise to my customer base prop makers who will advertise me, that's a different line of business :)

Still looking forward to.you and DJ Logicalia have a battle of the djs at the goio meet up (whenever it happens :) )
