I'm gonna probably get heat for this, but I want to discuss planes.
1. Can we have them?
2. Is it possible to have a nice balance with planes and airships
3. If so how would Muse implement them?
4. Are planes even worth fighting for?
If this is something that has already been discussed I'm sorry I want to hear (READ) other people's opinions on planes. :P

duno about planes but what about an airship that works like one?
for example it can only slow down to a point or it starts to drop or something like that

Muse has actually recently mentioned plans for AI-controlled planes or gliders or something, but they didn't get any more specific than that.
They'd be cool, but I think that they would need an option to be turned on and off. I wouldn't want to see them every match. I don't think they'd be that hard to balance, though.

Maybe when a host sets up a match they can choose to have planes on or off. Also, I like the idea of having a 5 man crew, so one can be a plane pilot.
Pilots would have to be excellent plane pilots so they can take down their adversaries and then try to influence the airship battles.

If they do add planes, i hope i can fly one of them. But i think Captain Phil had a design concept for a whole new ship that acts like an aerial carrier with planes and helicopters back in the old forum archive

See I was thinking of the airship going at full steam with a plane attached to a claw underneath the hull and with the right conditions the plane can be released and it will fly off.

Or maybe, if at a high enough altitude, the plane gets released by the claw, unhooking it, and dives to get to get to its full speed. (engines will be on off course before the drop)

Actually, I like your idea a lot better than mine. It's more realistic and would be one helluva good time diving in the very beginning. But, the next issue if we have planes is we have to have some kind of AA gun if our Plane's Pilot is useless.

AA guns as in anti-aircraft fire to shoot down planes, if so then i think the curret weapons in game are good enough. But if you are talking about a gunner on a plane with a pilot, i dont know about that. i think it should be a single pilot though per plane. sorry if i misinterpret this

Planes and airship carriers has actually been (next to boarding) one of the most discussed topics in the GoIO forums. As N-Sunderland said, the devs have stated interest (both a long time ago and more recently) about some kind of plane used by AI's and perhaps even players.
EDIT: Here's some of old threads about the subject that I could remember:

and a bit of the fan-concepts for them

There's a thread for a "carrier airship" on this forum, and several on the old forum.
My opinion is that it's perhaps ok for AI, but for player controlled planes the physics if fixed-wing flight aren't very tolerant of lag and connection speed issues. The current four-person crew set-up is very strong and encourages team play, and most of the calls for planes are to introduce a single-player vehicle - that would change the competitive dynamic, and I don't think that would be for the better.

Muse's response to the question "Are there planes in this game?" asked by somebody on FB.
"Not yet! But there will be in the future."

I really hope it doesn't break the game (or rather the "feel" of the game).

Oh dear. I'm gonna go hide.
Personally, I don't think planes are a good idea for skirmish mode. However, for adventure mode, that's a different story.

I don't think that this will break the feel of the game to be honest. This just adds a different type of strategy to the game. Muse would not sacrifice the current feel just to add features. They will incorporate it in.

Ok after sitting in my captains quarters for a few hours I had an epiphany. I would not want AI to fly planes. For two reasons:
1.) plane AI would be unreliable and useless or they would be too good. Finding balance with AI is alot harder than finding balance with a player IMO.
2.) planes should be put in for the players enjoyment and the adding of another part of a crews tactics. Having AI fly planes, for me, would be like waving candy in front of a kid and saying you can never have it event though you can see it. Or like skyrims dragon born dlc where you could ride a dragon but its on rails and you never really get to fly it.
Plane idea: A plane with a pilot with a gun in the front and a gunner with a gun in a seat behind the pilot. The gunners gun is on a swivel that can turn in total 360 (with a safe zone of not shooting your plane of 210 degrees) you can move the gun 45 degrees up or 45 degrees down with a total of 90 degrees. This will require the pilot and gunner to communicate as well as the captain an the planes pilot to communicate for support, tactics, etc... Sorry if this was hard to read I'm on my phone right now and it's a lot harder than I thought

We're a small team. Implementing planes, especially ones that players can fly, is non-trivial. We just don't have the time or money. There may be opportunities in the future for this though so don't count it out.
And... absolutely no boarding. Go play a different game if you want absolute and utter chaos :P We don't have boarding or player weapons (pistols, etc...) for a very specific reason.
-
Yeah, if you want boarding, go play Air Buccaneers. This game is about airship combat, and that's final.

Are NPC planes still on the table for adventure mode?
Is adventure mode still on the table?
Where is this table?
If we were to put donuts on the table would this cause adventure mode to materialize sooner?

I'll chip in for the donuts :P

I understand this completely. I'm not trying to force planes down everyones throats (especially Muse's), I just wanted to talk about them and their future.
I have never agreed to boarding. I have never wanted it and never really will.
But thank you for the response and shedding some light on the situation!! :D

I think we need to throw more money at them. I've been luring people in my GW2 guild to the game... Crew for the Cloud Whaler.

Take some of the suggestions for improvements and make them premium products..
I've already said on another thread that I'd happily pay for ship customisation or to register ship names as unique (I wouldn't pay a lot, but I don't see myself buying many more outfits). Anything that isn't pay-to-win is fair game for income generation through the Steam micropayments system.

if you want bording you can allways just recreate this game in garrysmod.
actully part of the appeal of this game for me was because it seems simmalar to the things i used to get up to in Gmod, like making destructable galleons with a bunch of physics based weapons like harpoon cannons and torpedos that didnt explode, but had a massive spinning saw that would slice the ship in half instead. then cloneing it a bunch of times and having battles with my friends.

i think this man has a very reasonable idea here.
