Doesnt the manticore already serve the purpose a large-caliber minigun does?
That being a hail of small projectiles.

It's more like a large rocket carousel.

Not really.
The manticore provides a barrage of rockets with long reload time.
A the gatling gun provide constant and rapid low damage fire. A heavy gatling gun would have a much different purpose. It wouldn't necessarily be a higher caliber but have a much more ammo and a better rate of fire.
That being said, we can discuss balance later but you can't deny it would be awesome to have. :p

Would each Gatling gun pick up a new ammo box at the end of its revolution?

Which is even more awesome !
Now let's work again on that new file of yours :D
There's no turning back now haha

are you trying to imply that each gat would be able to house a different ammo clip? firing lesmok, incendiary, and burst rounds all at the same time? talk about getting a trifecta. . .

The traditional Gatling gun is like a circular conveyer belt for the loading and firing of a bullet. Eventually the magazine runs out and you have to reload, however if you have three or more Gatling guns rotating constantly you can attach a new magazine to one while the other two are still shooting. I am not saying it is a good idea game balance wise but it would be a fun way to make an auto-loader.

There was a super gatling in the first GoI so it would be nice to see the small gatling's big sister in GoIO. Plus I like the gatling - it is fun to shoot.

Maybe a heavy gatling with a spin-up time? It would make it so you couldn't just instantly start shredding hull. It should sound like the GAU-8 too (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Oc-xbpy-OI). So like a bullet-lawnmower.
An interesting balancing mechanic would be increasing jitter and shortly thereafter, damage to the component from firing extended bursts. I mean, if you fire them for too long, they start to melt.
I also think the barrels getting red-hot and smoke generation from firing it would be some nice added flair.

Well not just on the gatling, but perhaps overheating on some guns generally could be a thing? And there could be a new gunner item which is a coolant thing?
Just a thought anyway.

Heatsink is relevant again!

^ Awesome, we actually need all of them. :P

I'd stick with the ones with the multiple barrels. Using an air-cooled or water-cooled gun doesn't look as steampunk, probably because there's no gear-like spinning involved. Also the lower right one, for some reason, looks the most intimidating out of all of them.
EDIT: Just noticed that the barrels are in a housing. Disregard.

Have to say that I like the water-cooled machine guns way more than gatlings, but I guess it's a personal taste.

How is it that everybody keeps fortetting the dieselpunk part (witch machine-guns are).
