Next time you get a second gunner just vote-kick them.

I broke my promise and started playing a bit again (shame on me) and guess what....
Ill just keep posting these here. I obviously sent feedback to Muse already.
Double gunner makes Cpt ragequit:

Are you sending Muse an email like a good player every time?
-
I obviously sent feedback to Muse already.
Yeeeaah it is kinda implied he does.
Although I believe he should spam them. With. Every. Last. Case. Seperately.
-
I did send feedback a couple of times. I guess I should send an email for every single case lol. I did send a seperate email with the video tho :D
Btw I do not post those screenshots to embarass the low lvl players seen in the pictures. I just post them to show the importance of this issue. Many new players simply dont know how much their choice of class impacts the match.

Still going strong and living that double gunner life:

I also witnessed triple gunner (started the game with ONE gunner) on the enemy team today. Now I've seen it all.

To be fair, that one wasn't a mid match join.

Oh I thought it was. Scratch that one then.

Double gunner isn't THAT bad though.
I'm a pretty decent engineer with naught but a pipe wrench.
Just wish I didn't have to be... ¬_¬

Not even the most experienced player in the game is spared:

If you attempt to join a running match as a pilot when there already is one, you are notified that you will be changed to engineer.
If a gunner is already on the vessel you are attempting to join, just treat it exactly the same. It may nip out some sort of quasi-legitimate "lolgunnerstrats" brain damage, but I seriously can not conceptualize how this kind of thing hasn't already be implemented, considering double pilot has already been removed.
-
Its better to have AI, than a engi who just do not want or dont know how to play that role. So forced class switching isnt a good idea. I personally never play as a gunner, just because i dont like it. Thererefore i dont know how to play as a gunner (none of that gunner specific tricks). So i can easy imagine a forced enginer, He dont know where to be, and what to fix at the particular ship, he still just fire the guns, but with normal rounds.

IMO it's better for the second gunner to be switched to engineer since it communicates an important game paradigm, and with repair tools the person may at least be /accidentally/ useful. A second gunner is COMPLETELY useless, and it ought to feel that way.
If, according to your narrative, the would-be gunner is inexperienced enough to just sit on one gun and not use their ammo, then there's not really any issue right?
Perhaps there could be a warning similar to when you attempt to join as a second pilot, except instead of changing your class, it explicitly warns that if you join, you're going to be severely limiting your ship's ability to perform. They can then select "Join Match" or "Change Class." You could even amplify the effectiveness of the feature by changing the copy to "I'm an asshole" and "I'm not an asshole" ;)

Yeah, that was Obey Me's thing. I suffered the same behavior on my Goldfish yesterday.
It's because he doesn't /know/. If there was a game mechanic in place to keep second gunners from joining, this would never happen. Sorta like how you can't have multiple pilots, huh? Right?
-
He doesn't know.
Because he doesn't care.
Guy most probably have his fucking voice chat disabled. AND he doesn't read the chat. I have spent multiple minutes yesterday telling him that you just DON'T join as a second gunner, anywhere, to help with repairs, etc., etc.
Nope. No reaction.
And mechanic like you mention would be pretty damn dandy, but hey, Muse can't be arsed apparently.
Edit: You also forgot one thing. 2/3 ships in that fucking match had 2ND GUNNERS, MOST OF THEM OUT OF MIDMATCH JOINS
[Glenn Fricker's voice] WHAT THE FUCK?! C'MON!
-
If you attempt to join a running match as a pilot when there already is one, you are notified that you will be changed to engineer.

Most likely reason; they'd rather the new players have a free reign to do as they please. Whilst it does nothing but piss off have established players. A win win.
-
He doesn't know.
Because he doesn't care.
When considering new players, I find it difficult to attribute not knowing to not caring. This is especially true since so much of the education surrounding gameplay is inherently community-taught with no supporting game mechanics to provide structure for it. They only learn what they absorb from others, and that's such a squishy social variable that it's guaranteed that some will go about it civilly, and others /destructively/.
From a new player's perspective - and especially using other games as a means of (inaccurate) comparison - the gunner role seems to be the one that commands the most importance. If their (incorrect) understanding is that a vessel's chief effectiveness comes from those operating the armament, then the theory may assemble that the engineer is a dedicated "medic" that exclusively maintains the remaining operations. This is not a lack of /caring/, this is a misapplication of /logic/. If players are given free reign to choose whichever class they choose on joining, why couldn't this be the case?
A second gunner receiving flak for choosing that class may observe engineer as a demotion - "you're not allowed to shoot until you're actually good" - or even pressure into a role they don't believe they can handle yet.
This is why rigid game mechanics are so important. A cap on gunner joins communicates a paradigm that engineers are the "default" crew role, and that they are as functional (and important!) in offensive strategy as the rest of the crew. As well, it 100% prevents the genuine accidental join from a player that isn't versed enough to double-check their class before joining an empty slot.
This is not to discredit situations where a new gunner is purposefully being abrasive or denying advice from other players, but I believe that a lot of this behavior stems from a misunderstanding about important game mechanics that are not reinforced /anywhere/ in the architecture of the game itself. Hence why it's such a heated social situation whenever it crops up.
-
Ok, Ravioli? You missed the point.

Nope. No reaction.
If he gave a flying fuck, he would have that explained. As calmly as the situation would present me opportunity with.
I am very chill and defensive towards new players that listen and give some degree of fuck.
-
Ok, Ravioli? You missed the point.
I don't believe so. But I'm also not going to write up a whole post saying "yeah what an asshole." It's deeper than that.
I'd rather dedicate my attention to how these situations can be averted via intentional design. You know, the topic.
Because ultimately it's better to be screaming at a non-communicative engineer than a second gunner. You're never going to fully avoid the twat but at least you can give him a mallet.
-
Of all the gunners who joined mid match on my ship, left cause I asked them to.
nicely
Perhaps I am just lucky.
Many of the novices don't know they join as a gunner, it happened to me too. They also don't know if the match is running or not.
Perhaps Muse can make it more clear that one match is running, or whatever.

The end is near:

Second gunners are now blocked from joining slots 1, 3 and 4 in running matches in devapp. We are running tests to make sure there are no bugs. Official sessions are at 5pm EDT Friday, and 3PM EDT Saturday.

To add what Analus posted; there was a captain, but he left after the 2 gunners joined. and then.... ye
-
Well there is an old saying, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink". Even if you switch new players to engineer you may not be able to get them to repair or get off guns. That's why I still think slot lock would be superior.
-
I don't believe any system that actively bars users from playing an already-dead game is superior at all. When there is only one PVP lobby, and that one remaining player online tries to join your lobby and can't, what, he's supposed to just fuck himself?
-
In Narayan's mind - yes. Although I believe your question was rhetorical, cause the answer is obvious to non-toddler.
-
My first game online after playing the toturial, I joined a broken ship as gunner, after 30 seconds my ship explodes. THE END.
Why would you ever put a new player in this position. I am not likely to try this again because this is really not logical to me.
I am someone who likes stats and if there are stats ingame they are already ruined.
my suggestion is . Don't let people join mid-fight very discouraging.

Could've gone Engineer and saved the ship.
But yes, you are a special case and should ask for a refund, bad game!
And I too, am a numbers man. For example: Quick Maths - 2 plus 2 is 4 minus 1 that's 3 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X09oxyIeGuY)

> One loss

The fuck is wrong with you?
-
Be nice, you two. It does matter to some people.
But yes, that is the chance you take joining running matches. Often the reason a ship has an empty slot is because they are losing the match and leave to preserve their win rate. Nothing we can do for that.
-
I'm glad that this feature has been employed. It is definitely a relief to not have to worry about a second gunner joining during the battle.
However, I still find a few issues with how this system treats returning to the lobby. When the gunner is in slots 3-4 before the match begins, when we return to the lobby they auto-switch back to engineer. This creates problems when trying to manage crew roles, because I've already experienced cases of gunners not realizing they were auto-switched to another class by the time the match starts, or there's a mad-dash for a giddy crew member to become the gunner when they ought to not be.
Why doesn't the crew lineup just reshuffle after the match to put the current gunner in slot 2?
