Question 1: Do you use first or third person, and why?
Question 2: What field of view setting do you use?
I always go first person myself. It's much better for engineering. It's easier to judge distances to components, easier to make jumps around the ship, etc. Third person seems like it would be useful for piloting, but I just can't break a habit.
As for FOV, after it became scalable I decided to stick with the minimum. Part of it is just that I'm used to it, but the other thing is how it scales onto guns. When I played around with maximum FOV when it was released, I found that because the guns were designed alongside the original FOV, going maximum would distort distances to enemy ships and make it harder to judge range when off the gun. So I decided to stick with the minimum.
What about you guys?

^this and max FOV, i like to see all the things around me.
as for guns, i didn't notice any difference but as soon as the slider got there i turned it max so i'm used to it i guess.

I sit at full FoV cos I like being able to see as much as I can and being able to react as quick as possible. Also helps me combat tunnel vision.
Y...you can go into third person?!
-
really? a ca? really? (try pressing "p")

*shakes head in disappointment*
You can toggle first and third person by pressing P.

To be fair to Cul, he's the least experienced CA we have. He got the position more for how motivated he was (and is) to help the community.
-
Fov maxed and first person all day.
-
I use third person for piloting... this helps me for when I need to see everything. First person is for gunning... (People don't like it when I engy :P)

To defend myself: the option to go into Third Person isn't in the manual, nor does anyone talk about it(until now, anyway). It might be a good thing to include- I thought it was simply a cinematography option during trailers of the game.
Learn something new every day, huh?

I always go first person with standard POV. I was playing since fairly early in the beta (back when it was only open on certain weekends) and that's just the FOV I got used to judging distances with. As for the first person, well, I've always been an FPS player at heart.

*high five for default FOV*

I've never fiddled with any of the settings, I use a 52" screen for my pc, so I try to narrow the vision field as much as I can.
-
i use 80 Fov and First person because i like feeling in the shoes of the player. I Also hail from xbox 360 Where i mostly play shooters so to me this is second nature c:

My favorite view is a 3rd choice (real). Spectator ship view WHILE FLYING. There is a glitch if you spectate a match then become a captain you will view yourself from far away but only until your ship dies. It is hard to get to the helm but a helm symbol pops up when you are looking at it. I had my crew direct me to the helm the first time this happened. You have a 360 view around your ship without obstructions and you can see around corners. I have a screen shot but I'm afk.

sounds derpy but diffrent :P

Could you document methods and send a bug report to feedback@musegames.com

I know what parts of my ships superstructure when viewed from 1st person correspond to 90 degrees offset from front , and the trifecta overlap. As well as the vertical limits of most of my guns. I may not have the best view of the action from first person but I can be fairly certain there will be some action for my gunners wile using it.
-
I have been playing FPS's forever, and I tend to go with the highest FOV I can manage before my head starts to hurt. And sometimes, even further. >:3
-
I've discovered that, while I use 3rd person, I seem to get stuck on things less as an engineer cos I know where my feet are. May be confirmation bias, but I'm starting to like it.

3rd person as engi? I can't even come close to imagining what that would be like.
-
Goofy looking to me.
-
Third-person, all the time. The extra visibility is a great thing to have, especially when i'm piloting a ship and I need to see what's below me.
-
I wanted to revive this thread to see if I'm the only one with a strange reason for piloting in third person.
I like piloting in 3rd person because the tilt of my character's torso gives me a quick visual hint of how much the steering wheel is turned. In really tense moments it can be hard to gauge and having my character leaning completely against one side or another is a great giveaway.
I do everything else in 1st (gunning, engineering) but I just can't pilot in anything other than 3d. It also seems to give me more spatial awareness (although I left the FOV at default because I hate the fish eye feeling...)

Many times that I am sitting in lobby, I will randomly say 'Press P to go into third-person mode'. Many times after I say that, a few people will respond in a way implying that they didn't know that. I suggest that this option should be put into the game manual- the last time that I checked, it was not in there.
-
More people are probably going to read the random lobby chat. Just keep posting that. You'll get surprised reactions every time. :D
-
yea i didnt know that untill now... Ima have to try piloting in 3rd...

See!
Put it in the manual!
:D

Been playing with first person and moderate FOV, but got worried I might be ruining my shots because of it. How much does it affect trajectory-anticipation and shooting overall? :o

:D
I shall see to it :P... well when we get to work on the community manual that is

Been flying in third person ever since I found the p button.
Do everything else in first person though.
-
I prefer engineering in 3rd person actually, didn't know it was that strange. I have to agree with Cullen, I would rather know where my feet are than my hands.
... also, hats.
-
I max FOV, and I find that third person ruins my depth perception.
Not that it's particularly great when flying a ship like the Goldfish or Galleon.
-
Always first person, third person just kinda messes with me. Not sure if I've ever actually adjusted my FOV.
