Title: Other games about Airships.
Post by: David Dire on February 25, 2015, 01:06:10 pm
As the title says, I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with any games sort of like this one, with Airship combat as you either Gunning, or flying, or repairing. I don't mean there's different roles, heck, I'd be fine with any singleplayer game offered, but at least sort of like GoIO.

I'll also be fine if the game is an RTS (Literally GoIO RTS is my dream game), or even a storyline focused game, or even something (maybe) not combat related, so, Airship Simulator basically.

There was a very old game called "Air Power" where you flew Zeplin carrier dropped airplanes.

More recently there is the Crimson Skies franchise.

Air Buccaneers...
It didn't kick off too well but it gave a good fight, the biggest problems were getting into a game (at peak times it had a smaller player base than GoI, and too many servers were being set up for higher player counts...)
The community was somewhat toxic for new players, they didn't have the gentlemanly steampunk manners.
But it was very similar, pilot, mechanic or gunner.
Pilots were very short in supply, gunners an over abundance...

Guess I should have said "Besides Air Buccaneers" in my OP, yeah :P.

It's sorta sad how dead it is. Doesn't look like a bad game.

I have been semi-obsessed with airships ever since I devoured that series of books at an impressionable age, you know the one.

Miyazaki movies didn't help much either, the dude loves huge flying machines (iirc he grew up next to a ww2 plane factory) and is a great writer/animator too. There are a few promising games out there being developed, but you have to dig for a bit.

Anyway there was this one game looked really nice but development speed/clarity makes muse and adventure mode look fast. I.e. don't expect playable game in the next 2 years at least. The concept art and scant gameplay demos look really pretty though. http://20000above.com When it does come out it will be glorious.

Of playable games (in early access) I haven't played either of these two but they look fun already. http://zarkonnen.com/airships http://store.steampowered.com/app/268650 , both let you design and build your own airship.

Also I'm pretty sure some GOI folks have fooled around making semi-functional GOI ship replicas in robocraft. Reviews for the game are mixed though. http://store.steampowered.com/app/301520

p.s. if there is ever a GOI meetup we will have to play sky galleons of mars, it's a naval combat tabletop wargame and I've heard amazing stories, but hard to track down.

Definitely going to check out 20,000 above and Airships, thanks Omni!

Also, the airpower game looks quite fun.

Can anybody tell me if this is a reliable download/someplace else that is reliable to download it from?

http://www.squakenet.com/download/air-power/5738/

It reminds me of Star Wars Battlefront 2, one of those old games that can still stand up.

@Omni: I'm friends with a couple of the robocraft dev team ( Age ofnEmpires 2 lan parties ftw!) and it is a good game, just avoid the community!
Though I think their artists are taking too much inspiration from Lego "bionicles" but you know, target market and all that disappointing jazz..

It's nearly 20 years old and never released outside of Japan, but Velldeselba Senki will always be rather dear to me

The airship designs are great:

I tried to get Archriel to play it a while ago but he never did ):

I have been considering getting Windforge, though the lack of multiplayer is a drawback.

Sega has been sitting a PC version for 15yrs now. They teased it back then, then sat on it. Shelved it again for Legends. It exists. Sega just needs to get the thumb out of their butt and let it out.

Found another one! Looks like GOIO combined with spiderman except you have to craft your ship. http://www.worldsadrift.com/ No playable version yet but I like the artwork and designer interview makes it sound interesting.

the picture is a hint, the book series is called 'edge chronicles' but it got translated simply as 'sky pirates' into my native russian. Really beautiful illustrations on it, fanciful world and plot/characterisation is alright. 12-year-old me was absolutely rapt (hee hee, I've been waiting a long time to say that). Especially if you are also 12 or have friends/relatives that age I absolutely recommend.

i have never heard of it, will keep it in mind, incidentally i recommend the barsoom series it was written in the late 1800s almost all of it takes place on mars, main character is a former confederate officer, and yes it has airships

I just realized that Civ has a Steampunk DLC, Empires of Smoky Skies. They don't feel quite steampunky, but its a game that involves airships (and landships and flyers).

There were blimps in warcraft, weren't there? Don't know about WoW, never played it, but I definitely remember blimps in Warcraft.

Ah.. goblin zeppelins. They were pretty much the only air-transport unit in the game. I don't know if zeppelins were mounts in World of Warcraft. Never played much WoW myself.

Talking about MMORPGs, Maplestory went steampunk sometime in the past. Their lore/world was never very good and now it's a monstrous sack of unbearable stories. Got no idea what Maplestory steampunk is all about.

But Maple had airships from the beginning. There was an encounter against Balrogs on an airship (man, that was long, long ago) that I remember losing. So, there's another game that features airships.

WoW is a terrible representation of the awesomely fun Warcraft series, from 1 through to Warcraft 3 the throzen throne. There used to be a fair selection of flying units, including goblin zeppelins' and dwarven helicopter bombers, powered by diesel, very steampunk looking.

Then came WoW and vanilla wow before expansion packs was good...

Then blizzard took their book.of lore, and used it to warm their mitts on the pile of £50 notes they were burning to make more lore killing expansions, as their money burning pile grew bigger and bigger....
RIP Warcraft lore....
Medivh would turn in his grave...

Airships!!!!!

It's real difficult to keep a good lore in an MMORPGs. Yearly events and expansions screw with the lore. Sometimes, the lore has to change to keep the game "popular". Some MMORPGs even change their lore for monetization purposes.

Which is funny/stupid because a big part of an RPGame is the lore.

It's kinda ironic that Starcraft, which was never too heavy on the lore, has a better story than Warcraft.

Post by: Kamoba on April 06, 2015, 01:24:55 pm
I can understand lore progression during yearly events, but Blizzard pissed on their own history, bending things which happened in their previous games and twisting things which had been said about the past to better suit what they wanted to sell...

Otherwise I do understand lore progression

Let's just hope Muse never does that. (although, we need a lore to begin with in the first place :P)

Level 45 pilot offering transport services for all raiders, free of charge, we will arrive in a galleon and the survivors of the raid will escape with me on a squid I shall commandeer from their sky docks... Failing that we'll steal Howards Spire
