So, I was wondering, what everyone's internet speeds are, and who their internet service provider is.
(you can test your speeds here (http://www.speedtest.net).)
So, to begin here are my speeds.
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/3739832680.png) (http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3739832680)
Comcast. Comcast Business.
My family pays $40/month for 12.5 down, 1.5 up (should be $60, but we got a discount) We used to get about 40 down, 6 up, but then our neighbors started using more, or Comcast started throttling its business customers.
Welcome to Hotel Comcastifornia, or Standard Internet Corporation.
(Even my cellphone when tethered to my computer, using 4G is faster than Comcast)

about 16mb download and about 1mb upload with Time Warner Cable.

...we're moving this month; I'm anxious to see what Verizon Fios can do for us.
-

Recently got it upgraded. I like being able to download games on Steam in under 5 minutes.
Downside is that Rogers goes down a lot. For no reason. I'd trade a high download speed for something that doesn't randomly drop for 30 minutes to and hour at a time any day.
-
Damn, sunderland, how much do you pay for that? Anyways, when my area gets google fiber (I can't wait, Comcast is a royal pain), gigabit internet is definitely worth it for $80/month
-
Probably not that much. If he lives in a city that has invested in good network infrastructure, he likely pays a decent price.
3000/768 DSL here. Under Verizon's iron boot. This is the best you can get if you don't go FIOS. While FIOS is in this area, Verizon is one of the worst companies to deal with. They love to slap on hidden fees or extra charges. They can get away with it too because the only other competitor is Cable and thats a whole new nightmare.
If you go to some of the towns nearby there is ATT networks and they run DSL at FIOS speeds right now. Friend of mine about 20 mins away pays dirt cheap for FIOS level speed and its just plain old DSL. But he can do it cause he is on ATT's network.
There was hope when FIOS first got here because Verizon played nice and allowed resellers to sell FIOS. My ISP was one of them. They did that for a year then Verizon suddenly terminated the contract and told my ISP that users on their network had to switch to Verizon or their services would be shut off. ISP was forced to comply and all they could do was setup special services for customers to keep their e-mails.
You wonder how Verizon gets away with this...then you call them out to fix a copper telephone line and it takes 6 techs and 2 weeks to do it. They sent out 5 FIOS techs who could only fiddle with the line then try to push FIOS, then finally the last guy was a copper line tech who found the problem and had new wires patched in within an hour.
No offense if anyone here works for Verizon, but your company is full of douchbags.

Pretty much sums it up.

I'll go sit in a corner.

*Japan laughs...aww it thinks its internet :D
Yeah that is the story of things. $35 for insane speed and areas like mine for the same price get...

Makes you want to put flaming poo bags on Verizon's doorstep.

Romtelecom is the worst internet provider here. And I have to stick with it 'till the contract ends. Help.

Wi-Fi Midwest is literally the only internet provider that is around here.
Sucks to be me.

..i wish steam could go at 41.34mb/s

The speedtest shows your speed in megabits/second. 8 megabits per second = 1 megabyte per second.
Megabytes/second = x/8, where X is your internet speed in megabits.

honestly, that sounds like my experience with ATT when I used them. it took them a month and several techs with misinformation flying back and forth within the company to get internet set up for me in my first apartment, and then after another three weeks of trying to get service transferred to another apartment within the same complex, I fired them and went TWC. ...oh...and when I did fire them, instead of cancelling my service, they just cancelled the order to have my service transferred - so they still tried to keep service up at the old apartment I was no longer living in. anyway, TWC: they had my internet up and running when promised, and no other problems so far *knock on wood*.
the apartment complex we're moving to only has Verizon Fios. it's already way more expensive than we're paying now, borderline what we can afford...hidden fees? >< crap. got my fingers crossed...
...I've been saying I may drop off the face of the earth for a little while...I'm anticipating another ATT experience out of one of the companies I'm dealing with and hoping I'm wrong.

Does the winner get a prize? :D

Silly Speedtest users. Their readings are usually inaccurate.

Actually, speedtest is pretty accurate. I download with 1.2 megebytes per second.(Steam says it)
While testmynet says I'm downloading with just 340 kb/s.
So, therefore, LIES.

Verizon is notorious for suddenly adding fees or increasing rates. If they say guaranteed price, you better believe that after the period is over, it'll go up. All sorts of things they pull. We've had their phone service for years and can count on them doing stuff like this from time to time. I got a friend who was with Verizon wireless too and he said he finally left cause they were pulling the same tricks. He got sick of seeing all sorts of bizarre things added to the bills.
Best Telco we ever had long ago was Sprint. At least in this area. That was when we were with Earthlink and they had a combo deal. Net + Sprint phone. Earthlink outsourced and became a crappy company so had to give it up. Price was always good with Sprint tho. No hidden fees or strange charges and customer service was 100% better than Verizon. But, companies change.

oh, that goes for anything, any company, ever - in my experience. TWC increased our monthly price after the first year too. and hell, in the same vein, you should see how much my rent goes up every year - it's roughly $100/mo more. I just try to pay attention at the end of a term. if you're only guaranteed for a year, that's all you get.
-sigh- that's why we're trying to figure out whether to do a 2-yr contract with a possibility of early termination after our lease is up, or do their no contract plan at a much elevated rate with price only guaranteed for one year. neither option is a good one.
...I feel as though we're hijacking this thread XD sorry!

And is that 49 down, 76 up from DSL also? (Phone line connection)?

It is not DSL, it's GPon.
Like for 35$ you can get 200 mb/s. Proof: http://www.mgts.ru/home/internet/gpon/tariffs
Russian currency is like 30 per 1 dollar. I have discounts because I am student ^^

1000 mbps for only 14-18 dollas per month, TV INCLUDED. WHEN DID ROMANIA DO DIS? :OOOO
I can't wait for my contract with the current ISP to end. Also, my current ISP(Romtelecom) will have a rebrand! Bye Romtelecom, welcome Deutsche Telekom.
Oh and a reminder, I pay 24$ for 12 mbps per month(Phone included, back in the time we needed a phone to use nets, even if we don't use the phone)

Yeah, optics are pretty awesome. GPON can make up to 1gb/s.
The question is - I can barely imagine why would you need more than 350mbps at home , unless you want to host a little game server... no, stil much XD

Don't get me wrong, but the idea of downloading a 9GB game in a minute...I could install my entire game collection in 1 hour or so.

Yeah, but you don't have place on SSD for all of them at same time XD
-
No, but a HDD's Write rate is fast enough to keep up with that. SSDs aren't needed.

I just got my new PC, Caramel is such a sweeeeeeeeeeet guy <3. 2X1 TB HDD WD Black. c:

Well, I get up to 170 mb/s write rate. I could've gone for an SSD, but I need a lot of space.
Actually, this PC is overkill, it's way too powerful xD.

SSD Cache option then. Get the storage space of HDD with speed of SSD. I added a Synapse onto my tower awhile back. Gives a nice speed boost. However, there is a drawback. Being things tend to need to load once into the cache drive for you to get the speed boost. Course in games that load often or have areas with huge load times, its great. In SWTOR, Corellia has one of the most insane load times I've seen in prolly a decade. Close to 5 minutes and my system isn't slow. SSD cache cuts it in half. Its still long but you can't go and use the potty or get a snack anymore.

I have five seconds from start button to password screen. Can be 2 if I enable quick boot in bios.
SSD canche is good for laptops but not for towers. You can't play all 85 games in your library at same time, right? My SSD contains system and games i want to work fast, and I easily reinstal everything I want, and with my speeds it's just the time to get a snack or make coffee =)

Completely random.
At times like this that i can send this i have great or ok net.
But then there are times that i have unplayable or no net.
That is because my net is a building net. I share it with 8 other people, yett its very strong at handling downloads. Problem is i believe that there is this... technical randomness to it. I really dont know but the net goes up and down at the most random of times.
