I think a lot of people join lobbies and matches without thinking about what their current class is. It may stop a lot of double pilots by displaying a warning message when a player clicks on a crew slot while they have the pilot class selected. The warning message could also have buttons to join a match and change classes as well. This would be especially useful for joining running matches, because I suspect people join open slots in running matches in a bit of a rush.

I support this idea, maybe add a warning for double gunner join as well?

Double Gunner isn't always a bad thing. The only class you can never use more than 1 of is the Pilot. Other combinations it's just a matter of if it's the most effecient or not.

At this point, most builds have moved away from two gunners, and you just about never want a second person joining midmatch as a gunner. That's not saying you won't do good with two gunners, but it's going to be a lot more difficult than having two engineers.
That being said, there's never a reason to have a second pilot.
I think it's a good idea. I rarely have a second pilot join, but I get a second gunner a lot. Usually it's newer players who aren't aware that almost all captains prefer a 1 gunner maximum on their ships. So a warning about them joining as a gunner might not have any impact on them.

Double gunner is always a bad thing when it is forced upon you which is how it always happens. You should go into a match expecting that the captain doesn't want more than one gunner, then act very surprised if they request more than one.

I still see second pilots a lot even since the demise of quick join. In fact I wrote the initial post just after I was about to join a running game as an engineer, but was denied because a second pilot joined. My guess is that people rush into joining running games without thinking about their class which is why you get a lot on unnecessary double gunners and pilots.
