I know of quite a few on theme musical artists if people are interested.
For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULzDJTo1zNw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULzDJTo1zNw)

Just wanted to disturb your thread and say Hi! We flew together last night! And then my comp crashed :(
-
That we did, and I look forward to flying with you again.

If it wasn't any inpiration in creating GOI, I'll eat my hat:D
-
After listening to both of these awesome pieces, I must now contribute at some point. My quest begins.
-
Ride of the Valkyries always seems to go really well with GoIO.
-
I have to disagree with Abney park. I dont think that song represents Guns of Icarus well, it's far to grungey. A smoother subtler song fits more I think.
Try this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjHrp5mRo4M

0:00 to 0:36 in that makes me feel like walking into the Burning Skies.

The music is not very fitting. But together with the videoclip it looks like it would be the trailer to a mashup game between Guns of Icarus online and something more futuristic. All in all I just thought it was a neat videoclip.
Just thought I would throw it out there :)

I almost forgot that video. It's so sexy.

A very engineer feel to it.

I'd say a few songs on the Bastion OST fit pretty well -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOXSDh_Lswc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQWAcgefsQQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di45CbaAHek
they tend to have that rustic, country sound, with a post-apoc feel, which I reckon fits pretty well to GoI.
-
Oh God, someone mentioned Bastion. I love that game to death, and the OST would fit like a glove.
-
I always though the soundtrack from Arcanum would fit very well. Hell, this game reminds me of Arcanum so much... except you know magic. And elves... and yeti.
... It doesnt have much to do with Arcanum, but maybe the music. And diesel punk aspects.
-
doesnt need an explanation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-OOD1mvSys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-OOD1mvSys)
-
I will have to agree, good song.
-
Here's another suggestion, a gem off the Django Unchained soundtrack.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMoqA7RtNrM
-
If it's not funky, it ain't flying.
Quantic - The 5th Exotic especially
Gorillaz
Brian Eno
Shaolin Afronauts
The Lafayette Afro Rock Band
Daft Punk
Monophonics
The Doors if the mood is right
It depends on the ship really. My squid requires afro-funk or new wave grooves, my junker needs some rough sounding bluegrass to carry me through the skies, if I am flying a galley I am shouting at the AI with my mic because they won't man the right guns or repair the right shit so no time for music.
(I just assume all Goldfish captains are listening to Ace of Bass or something like that, makes them feel real pretty.)

Love these music posts, get to listen to some new stuff and see how what people listen to they can relate to this game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV3H3t6XsxU Sure there are no "roads" and it's not even steampunk, but the concept is still there, just jump on your airship and start sailing as far as you please. This is how I imagine adventure mode sailing onward into the sunset toward new adventures.
And play this at least once on when at the refinery! (Warning: Ponies involved, proceed with caution.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5HODSIpyCo
-
So now whenever I play I put on music from like the fucking 20s and shit, but like seriously, it's awesome, since the world ended at that time it fits, and it's really erie to listen to old, distorted songs while flying towards the enemy ship, and while all the shooting and explosions are happening you hear it in the backround, and when it's all over it gives you a really erie weird feeling since the music is still playing and it's usually happy stuff, but your ship is dead or something.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuvZ6rLiGMQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBTSoLzZ3-U (even though this song doesn't fit the time I don't care, im such a jazz nerd -_- )
they all sound better on Spotify anyway
-
Some of the Kevin Macleod stuff is pretty good.

To be used when going all harpoon squid or all flamer squid.

I have to say, the Gents occasionally blast music through DJ Abrams' microphone. Mostly for laughs, but we play the main theme of Pirates of the Caribbean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWPJrSSXtww (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWPJrSSXtww)
And blame Roy's preferences for this, but the Beegees' Stayin' Alive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_izvAbhExY
Rethburn's theme tune, Drunker Sailor, by the Irish Rovers.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGyPuey-1Jw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGyPuey-1Jw)
Oh, and that reminds me, Ataris approves of the Red Alert music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDQ7hXMLxGc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDQ7hXMLxGc) and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3rGO2WhZGg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3rGO2WhZGg)
Hope you enjoyed some of the lighthearted pseudo-battle music on offer here.

So you see a Galleon far in the distance and then... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_MW65XxS7s&list=PLBwYyguc6iijzDMsQ2j1I4VBkhX70BCRA&index=2
Also these two are great pieces that fit my style, but maybe not the overall theme of the game:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ddsa5giY7o
and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DDS5yVeVgY
-
My first nomination: Madness, the flight theme off the Porco Rosso soundtrack. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPhzp2tj_QE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPhzp2tj_QE)
My second would probably be the Ace Combat Zero soundtrack. I find myself listening to the Hresvelgr motif (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oNWGxerWsk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oNWGxerWsk)) in tense moments, the Round Table theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xl2C28hMN2U (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xl2C28hMN2U)) for less cautious dogfighting, and the music from the Gelb duel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0f3GZv_pjoI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0f3GZv_pjoI)) when it's down to the wire. Or if I'm just feeling like a straight-up badass, one word: Zero. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGjwXI0n5-I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGjwXI0n5-I))
Now for some less videogame-geeky tunes: Holst's Mars: The Bringer of War is a classic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0bcRCCg01I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0bcRCCg01I)), or maybe Khachaturian's Sabre Dance if it's one of... those games. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXHOB1s56zc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXHOB1s56zc))
I'll post more when I think of 'em.

Anything composed by Nobuo Uematsu will, for the most part, hit the right tone for me.

Pardon? I mean, sure, he does sweeping orchestral scores and whatnot but the guy loves his 1970s Emerson Lake and Palmer-style progressive rock organ pieces too. That's kind of a broad spectrum, isn't it?

Digging the Caravan Palace.

that is indeed true. not everything would be the best fit for everyone but my first experience and perhaps love of airships came from the Final Fantasy series. So how could I hear any of his music and not be reminded of that sense of wonder that came with exploring some of the expansive overworlds in those great airships as well as the occasional fights that took place on them.

I'll add a few pieces of music form World of Warcraft.
Gunship Battle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLANCpGw8cU
Warships. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-ucRu5VeGs
Gunships. (Sort of a longer version Gunship battle without cannon noises) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zokxiMizxZ0
And Operation: Gnomeregan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AL-j8h0r2Q8

I actually listen to Francois Rabbath's stuff (obscure, I know). I think the initial cello quartet in GoI made me think of it, since most of his solo pieces are him on the double bass accompanied by tabla. L'odyssee D'eau (https://soundcloud.com/beachframe/01-lodyssee-deau) specifically (it sort of picks up into battle music around 5:30). Horda is Squid music. (https://soundcloud.com/beachframe/fran-ois-rabbath-horda) There are others, but they're not hosted online.
-
Another goodie from Caravan Palace: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qjomu9K0Xk
and oh, the OST from Greed Corp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqGLmkxtKcU&list=PL321BC3E103A74C7D
(if you haven't played Greed Corp you should take a look at it. It's a funny little game with rather cute steampunk graphics. Though the gameplay isn't too deep)
-
I like the Aether Shanty from Abney Park
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05rR7nozsYg
-
Dust Bowl Dance by Mumford and Sons reminds me of the Burren and GOIO.
http://youtu.be/a2e8-ZmtU7c

Yasunori Mitsuda's Undersea Palace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TH_uctnqdHs) from Chrono Trigger worked pretty well.

I have plenty of different music styles I listen to, mostly depending on which role and which map.
Let's start with something classical:

The Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack
Lord of the Rings soundtrack
Skyrim soundtrack

I seem to have a different approach for most of my games. Usually, the whole crew listens in on a Turntable.fm playlist.

THERE IS NO OPTION YOU MUST LISTEN TO IRON MAIDEN

HE WOULD BECOME THE MASTER OF ASIA
AAAAAAALEXANDER THE GREEEEEEAT

I realy think some of the battle themes from Rise of Nations fit well as well as others.
Examples include:
The Russian (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcZVm6R0H7Y)
Galleons (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wu3e81QglXQ)
Waterloo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWaW0fqvdgM)
Something calmer would be The Simple song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iJtoYKTEG8) and one of my personal favs as well.
And of course you can't forget the Rise of Legends spin off.
Doge's Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFXriQ5T31k)
Vinci Economic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJDV3LtZ9FQ)
Vinci Winning (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFWjwSrl5N4)
Clash of the Races (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om7zDjajc2s)
Contributing, I hope x3
-
Keeper (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm3e9hoo3ZM)
The Planetkillers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OOvVT56Thk)
Turanic Raiders (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTKakINXjl8)
Dunes and Scrap /especially/ give me a Homeworld vibe.
Also, ha! Rise of Legends. That brings back memories.

I would enjoy something more than "Dum, dumdumd dum, dum, dumdum." Hrm...
